Are you a beginner who wishes to learn the game or learn to play it better? Try Janice Kim's books. They're full of good information that is easy to understand and apply. This Wei-Chi book (AKA Weiqi, the Chinese word for the game) is confusing, uses nonstandard terminology, makes mistakes, and is extremely poorly arranged and difficult to read.Are you an intermediate player that wishes to improve your understanding of the game? Look at the cover of this book and the game it depicts. Even a low-level weak player ought to see that this is no reasonable game and depicts nothing instructive. This is representative of the book; it's there to satisfy Sinophilic urges without actually teaching anything useful, and reminds me of reading badly-translated Mah-Jongg rulebooks that date from the 1920s. You can find better books than this, and you'd be hard pressed to find worse.The only customer I can imagine being pleased by this as a purchase is a scholar looking for unusual (and questionable) esoteric Chinese traditions and stories about the game. This thin volume calls the stones "men", maps the board into compass areas (NSEW becomes Zu Shang Ping Chu), and references words like "knots", "prolongs", "choking", "knocks", and "syncope." In fact, I purchased this book hoping to find more go-specific stories like the story of the rotted axe handle, for I heard a list was contained therein. I was disappointed. It does indeed have several such stories, but each of them are summarized in only a few sentences. I cannot say when this book was actually written (surely it was written decades prior to its copywrite date of 1991) but I can say it is anachronistic, and that only lovers of anachronism, weiqi, and things Chinese should consider buying or even reading this book.
