Q&A with Daniel Day Q. Daniel, this book started as an experiment you documented on your blog. Tell us about this experiment and what inspired you to do it. A. One day while sitting on the floor of my living room, I was reading in Matthew and stumbled across the passage, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” That passage inspired me to ask a very simple question: “How can I make a difference in the world?” That question led me to a crazy idea. What if I walked around without shoes, blogged about my experiences, and used the blog to mobilize people to fight poverty? What if I raised money and sent the money to buy shoes for kids that didn’t have any? Would that make a difference in the world? So I did it. My hypothesis was that “making a difference in the world is as easy as going without something,” and I set out to see if it was true or not. Ten Days Without was literally an experiment, an experiment that ended up changing my life. After Ten Days Without shoes, I went without furniture, legs, media, a coat, human touch, speech, and others. Each experiment led me to new revelations about myself, what it means to make a difference in the world, and ultimately what it means to live like Jesus. Q. You call this experiment “a rebellion against apathy.” Why are so many teens and young adults apathetic, especially those who have grown up in the Christian culture? A. I think apathy is a bi-product of being distracted. I think that if you asked a teenager if they cared about kids dying in Africa from lack of clean drinking water, they would say, “yes.” I think that if you asked them to text the word “Water” to donate $5, most of them would gladly give $5 of their parents’ money to help provide clean water for those in need. So the problem is not as simple as teenagers or young adults not caring about the bigger issues in the world. To me, the real root of modern apathy is found in the amount of time we stare at flickering screens every day. (According to a Kaiser Family Foundation study, the average American teenager consumes 7:38 of media each day.) Q. You invited others to join you on this experiment. Can you share a story or two from what others learned on their journey? A. A woman named Vianca sent me this story. She lives in Nashville, and is the mother of four kids. Her oldest is five, a girl named Evria. On Vi’s first day of going without shoes, Evria looked at her and said, “Mommy, you’re forgetting something!” Vi said that when she explained to her daughter what she was doing, her five-year-old little girl offered to give away her shoes for the kids who needed them. A teenager named Justin, went 10 Days Without Speech. In the middle of his experiment, he and a friend of his were bullied at school. But instead of lashing out, Justin was quiet. He told me later that he wanted so badly to tell the kid off, and yet he was quiet. I told him that I didn’t think I would have been as brave as him. Q. How can families and youth groups use the book? A. There is nothing more powerful in our consumer culture than to go without. When families, youth groups, Christian schools, or the like embrace this idea – they will learn some amazing things. I think the best place to start is to choose one experiment to try as a group. Maybe Ten Days Without Media would be the best place to start. A youth group in Des Moines, Iowa did several of these experiments together. The youth pastor, Jason, actually designed each experiment to coincide with a special speaker who would come in and talk about whatever cause the youth group was fighting for. For example, during Ten Days Without Speech, Jason had a guy come in and talk about sex-trafficking. The money the group was raising was going to provide a voice for these girls. The speaker provided the “why” behind the group’s cause, and Jason said the response to his talk was more powerful than ever before because of the experiment. As far as families go, why not start with Ten Days Without Media? Turn off the TVs, laptops, cellphones, video game consoles, etc. I bet a lot of families will spend real, quality time together for the first time in years. Q. How did this concept change you personally? What were you most surprised to learn about yourself? A. I was really surprised to learn that I get in my own way. Making a difference in the world seems like such a big and daunting task, but it really begins with the people we come into contact with daily. And that’s where I make my mistake. I always picture the people I need to help as “over there” meaning overseas. I forget that I have a homeless guy named John who lives on the street just a few miles away from my house. For the first time in my life, I don’t just look at John and think, “Boy, I would love to help him out.” I take him out to eat, and we talk about life. Instead of letting me convince myself that I shouldn’t interact with John, I just go for it. That has been the biggest change in me over the past two years.

"As Christians it seems like we're called to live differently; but how can we amid all the excess of our culture? These kinds of questions haven't always concerned me. ...I grew up in a Christian home, attended a Christian school, and was involved in church, but I always felt as if my life was meant for something more. I wanted to honor God by loving Him and loving others, but I didn't know how to make a difference."Daniel Day wanted to make a difference in the world for Jesus, but he struggled with how. He could talk and talk and talk about Him, but he wanted to do something more. He wanted to live his life in radical obedience to Jesus Christ. One morning he asked his wife if making a difference in the world was as easy as walking into a business meeting without shoes?What if?What if making an impact for Christ really was that simple? He put the idea to the test and went 10 days without shoes. For 10 days he went completely without shoes to raise awareness and funds for those who can't afford shoes.This leap-frogged him to more 10 days without challenges. He started a blog about his experiences and many people joined him on his challengesI enjoyed the book, there were times my thoughts differed from Daniel's. I don't know how to say this without sounding like a spoiled, rich American, but we can't take our Western culture and our "must-haves" and spread them over the world. Not everyone in every country needs shoes simply because it will appease our conscience to give them. People in third world countries do without a lot of what we consider necessities. I personally think they would be better served by our asking them what their greatest need is and working to meet that. For example, I have a friend in Liberia who's greatest need is not shoes, or coats, or a home. His greatest need is the money to purchase enough food for himself and his family. If I were to raise money for him to have shoes or a coat, he would thank me graciously and think "but I need food."This book is GREAT at giving ideas on how we can work to raise awareness and funds for difference organizations that work directly with the poor and needy in both our country and our world.I received a free copy of this book for the purpose of review.

Daniel Ryan Day writes an eye-opener in his unassuming Ten Days Without. How much of what we have is simply taken for granted? Will anyone even notice if we do without 'necessities?' If they do notice, will they consider it just a publicity stunt or something to gain notoriety? I don't believe either of these was behind Day's adventures in discomfort (as he terms them). I believe he truly wanted to make a difference by showing how insulated we truly have become.Ten Days Without was an adjustment, and one that made me realize just how much I don't even think about things in my life that so many would consider luxuries. As I grab my coat or slip on my shoes, I wonder if I could take on - and complete - such a challenge. I don't think so. I am a 'barefooter' by preference, but only within the comfort of my own home or yard. I won't even run an errand barefoot. Maybe that goes back to years of childhood and my mama not letting us 'go to town' or anywhere outside the yard without shoes. I applaud Day's perseverance and agree that our vision needs adjusting. Reading his book was humbling, and made me question what I can do.I don't know that going without shoes or a coat for 10 days will make me more like Jesus, and I'm not necessarily sure that such a public statement is needed. If I live each day and my life reflects Jesus, will going without shoes make my statement louder? I don't think so. Was the book worth a read? Definitely. Did it open my eyes? It did. Daniel Ryan Day went ten days at a time without various comforts that most of us take for granted, with a goal of making a difference. The comforts he gave up, one at a time for ten days each, were: shoes, a coat, media, furniture, legs, waste, speech and touch. He wrote a chapter on each experience and encourages others to try the same.Ten days without shoes was about raising awareness about disease and about providing shoes to children who don’t have any. Before reading this, I hadn’t been aware of how a lack of shoes contributes to disease spread, but after he explained how scratched up his feet were at the end of ten days and how in a lot of countries there is trash and worse littered about the ground, it made a lot of sense. Walking through dirty puddles and everywhere you go with cuts and scrapes on your feet does sound like a recipe for infection.Ten days without a coat was to address homelessness. Like the chapter about shoes, this chapter reminded me how in abundance my family is. As a family we have a whole crate full of shoes and my kids probably have about twenty coats and jackets in all. I’ve already been trying to downsize already and this book has helped motivate me to put our excess to good use by donating where it’s most needed. Daniel Day talks about going outside in 4 degree weather in Colorado without a coat. The man definitely made some major sacrifices to stick to his purpose!Ten days without media is to address distractions. This one resonated with me the most, I suppose because I’m always trying to get rid of distractions. It’s one reason I don’t keep the internet on at home most of the time and why we don’t own a TV. I’m glad that the author decided to try this one and write about it. He talks about media addiction and how easy it is to be distracted away from the live people all around you. He reveals that during his media fast he discovered how much his wife had felt like a smartphone widow before, and when he shut off the smartphones and the television for ten days they were able to have a lot more quality time together.Ten days without furniture was to address global poverty. Daniel Day didn’t get rid of his furniture, but he went ten days without using it. He either stood or sat on the floor. He slept on the floor. And in this chapter of his book he reminds us of how rich we really are. Even the poor in America tend to be much better off than the poor in other countries.Ten days without legs was to address our response to disabilities. The author spent ten days without using his legs, which forced him to rely on a lot of people for help. This chapter gave a lot of helpful information for people who don’t know how to best interact with someone in a wheelchair, someone who has a Seeing Eye dog, or any other disability. He reminds us to look past the disability and see the person.Ten days without waste was to address the environment. Daniel and his wife went ten days of avoiding anything that would create trash/waste. He soon discovered he couldn’t eat fast food, because the paper wrapping would be waste. Grocery shopping was difficult. It was all a big reminder of how much waste we produce each year, and a call to minimize the amount of waste we’re responsible for.Ten days without speech was to address modern-day slavery. This topic was one that I think I already knew the most information about compared to the others, but it was still interesting and painful to read. I definitely take my freedom for granted most days, and this chapter was a good reminder of the ‘voiceless’ around the world who are stuck in slavery of all sorts.Ten days without touch was to address the ‘untouchables’, people who don’t receive touch as often as they need it such as orphans, widows and prisoners, and also people who’ve had horrible experiences with touch such as abuse victims. This chapter resonated with me a lot for various reasons. I was glad to see that Mr. Day made an exception with this one. During his ten days of not touching anyone, he made an exception for his children at bedtime. Since his youngest was one at the time, I think it was an appropriate exception.The final chapter brings it all together and calls us to make a difference in the world in whatever ways we can. Throughout the book are excerpts of what other have written on their ten days without journeys. Most of these I wouldn’t be able to do as a single mom of two small children, but there are other ways of raising awareness, and I look forward to donating my time in ways that I can.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Good book but understand that it is a travel log of Vermont cities and towns where Civil War soldiers haled from. For each location there are detailed driving instructions on where to find the homes/farms/town halls/churches of Vermont men recruited to fight the rebellion within the union. There are brief descriptions of the military unit the men were assigned to the Civil War battles they fought in, wounds received, how long they were in, who died from fighting, who died from disease, who died in what prison, and who came home to live out their life.

I bought this for a friend but managed to read it too, and I'm glad I did. "Something Abides" is a very thorough book, and excellent for anyone interested in the Civil War and in Vermont. Each town seems to have its own accounting here, and as you may know, Vermont paid a huge price in terms of the sheer number of young men lost in the Civil War. Howard Coffin has done some beautiful and meticulous research. And the illustrations are helpful and add a nice dimension to the book. Very illuminating and helpful.

Very nice book, can't wait to read it.

Although I downloaded this book in 2014 for some reason I “lost” it on my Kindle. As this plot revolves on the premise FBI agents use less than honorable methods such as making threats of prosecution of family and friends of the defendant. Also there is a subplot of a uranium Russia deal under Clinton. A lawyer is sent to federal prison under Rico act. He was innocent While serving his sentence he becomes aware of facts regarding the murder of a federal judge. This allows him an opportunity to have have his sentence commuted by giving up the murderer. How he gets back at the FBI is a really good story. Given today’s drama with the Mueller-Rosenstein debacle with rogue FBI personnel at the highest level and the Clinton Uranium deal with Russia this book read today was much more interesting. I recommend it highly.

I've read this book before, years ago, but as I do with most of his books, I read them quickly and then later I take the time to really savor them. I enjoy reading them the second time through probably more than the first time because I pick up more of the small interesting details. Grisham is about the best at details and yet, he doesn't get bogged down in them. He doesn't go on and on about what the character is wearing,for instance, unless it has to do with something necessary at that moment. Even then he covers only brief items. I like that. I skip over those parts in other books. Grisham does do a fantastic job of developing the characters of his books. Our feel like you know them personally. His story lines are always good and like this story full of twists and turns. Fantastic book!

Prior to reading The Racketeer, I've been a fan of John Grisham since The Firm was published and enjoyed -- though to varying degrees -- all of the many books of his that I read, but one. Now, after finishing The Racketeer, it becomes the second Grisham that I disliked.I won't spend time offering a summary of this book since this can be found in the Amazon Book Description above and in many reader reviews. Instead, this review will focus on why I was disappointed in it and, thus, why it is not a book I'd recommend you rush out to read.In fairness to Grisham, my problem with The Racketeer had nothing to do with his writing style, as Grisham does a good job in moving the book along at a pretty fast-paced, easy to read manner. As such, I never felt that the book dragged or was boring. Rather, my problems with The Racketeer stem from two factors: 1) without getting into specifics and run the risk of providing spoilers, the scheme on which the plot is based is almost totally preposterous; and 2) none of the characters are credible to me, nor are any of them likable; resulting in my not caring what happened to any of them.While I am usually very liberal in my willingness to suspend disbelief when reading a thriller, The Racketeer, despite its moving along at a fast pace, pushed me well beyond my limits in this area. As a consequence, although it was readable for me, it is not recommendable. I hope this review is helpful in deciding if The Racketeer is a book for you.

Mr. Grisham, where have you gone? I liked this book even less than Gray Mountain and that is saying something. At least Gray Mountain contained a plot of substance. It was going somewhere. It was building up. It had a climax. And then it...ended. Unresolved. With absolutely no indication that the protagonist was going to follow through with anything that the plot had been building up to. But I digress.The Racketeer gives us Malcolm Bannister, who cons the Feds into letting him go based on knowing who killed a Federal judge, and then while evading the relatives of the man he accused of killing said judge even though he's had all kinds of expensive plastic surgery, he sets up a fake movie company with the help of a woman he's just been flirting with for the last several years during prison visits, and lures young Nathan Cooley into giving over who really "done it", and then strands him in Jamaica with a first aid kit full of cocaine, while he and his girlfriend find stolen gold, give the Feds the REAL name of the guy who killed the Federal judge, and frolic in the surf happily ever after. Or something.Where's the man who wrote A Time to Kill? And The Firm?

My fist Grisham and a bit of a disappointment.It started out great. I really enjoyed the book till about half way through and then it fell flat.I did not like any character and for me to like a book there has to be someone, any one, with some redeeming qualities. There has to be a hero. There has to be someone I can root for. I didn't find a single person, or in-fact institution, that I can support. That was my biggest problem with it.I was hoping the protagonist Mal/Max can be that be it really took a turn for the worst.The way that the actual killer was set up and framed, even though far fetched (I'm actually okay with things being far fetched), was just so cold that it left me thinking "yeah this guy has done it but he hasn't really done anything to deserve being treated like this by Max when he hasn't done anything wrong with Max". This just made me dislike everyone else even more.The appearance of the girlfriend from the middle of no where was just ridiculous. Mal didn't even think of her till about 50% of the book! She felt a little forced to me.I think the only thing that kept me reading this book till the end is the first half. It was intriguing till that point then just got tedious.I hope my next Grisham is better than this one.

Maffetone was and is onto something with his research and training with professional athletes, and brings a genuine sense of knowledge and dedication to sports medicine that sets him and his method aside from his peers. This isn't about selling books and becoming some big-name diet guru; it's about helping people reach their full potential through smart training and nutrition.Quite a few friends and teammates gave me a hard time when I began the Maffetone 2-week test, and furthermore teased me when I slowed my pace to only train within my aerobic capacity. I'll admit, I was different from the pack and eating like gazelle in the wild. But staying strong and following the plan paid off in the end. Not only did I drop a significant amount of unnecessary weight, but my energy improved, my mood improved, and my split times and race times dropped significantly. His method takes dedication, but it's no gimmick. It works, and works really well.

I'm someone who has long thought that more is better. And as such I have constantly struggled with plateaus and set backs and feeling like I'm not getting into better shape really -- just grinding myself harder.E.g. I reduced my time on a (hilly) 6.1 mile course from 1:07 to :49. Yes, lost some weight and all, but really felt like I was on the raggedy edge -- stiff and sore and wondering "how many more of these runs do I have in me?"Most of my gains came from just having a better idea of how hard to push and when and just getting better at sucking it up.This book has given me some fresh ideas about how to train in a way that will actually make me healthier and fitter, and not just more of a grinder.The CW always talks about what Maffetone calls the aerobic zone as the "weight loss zone". Well I was never really overweight, so I wasn't too interested in that.Maffetone explains that it is much more than that, it is the zone where your aerobic system can actually improve, thus improving your endurance and work capacity.Having it put in those functional, fitness related terms makes me suddenly willing to work in that zone, and hopefully get the functional gains that I am after.Also, I really had never had anyone articulate the distinction between fit and healthy. I've been that fit/unhealthy person at times, and just couldn't articulate where I was. He expresses the concept very well.The issue I have is that I am a big believer in strength training and want to maintain that part of my training. That will be trick to integrate I think, but the concepts he offers here I think make it possible.So this will obviously require patience to show results. Hopefully I can demonstrate that. The fact that these workouts are not grueling will make that more likely!

I'm 62 and a life long runner. (Ran Boston and 20 other marathons.) I recovered from a very serious illness over a year ago. In November, although I had been working out daily for a year, I still couldn't run more than a few blocks without getting winded. I lost a lot of weight and muscle with my illness. When the weight came back on, even at my normal weight, it was far more fat and much less muscle. So I just pushed harder in my workouts. I didn't improve, didn't lose the fat, didn't feel good and got nowhere.Then I found Phil's book lying around my house. I started reading and it all made so much sense. I SLOWED DOWN although it was so hard for me to run that slow at first. And I changed to a low carb diet for the first time in my life. 3 months later I have leaned up, regained muscle tone and am beginning to be able to increase my pace. I now realize that this illness took a much heavier toll than I imagined and I am being patient and will work my way back in a healthy way. I've bought 3 more copies for my kids. I am very excited about all the new information!

Well written and explained. I've followed his two week cleanse with great results. I never much cared about heart rate monitors until he explained how important it is to manage your performance. It has helped me reset my personal understanding of my workout effort. Garmin ought to pay him a royalty!

The core of this book is about the balance between aerobic and anaerobic training to train in a way that is gentle and respectful for your body. Pushing harder is not the best or most sustainable way to enjoy doing sport over a longer period. I liked the book although it's focused on walking and running. Anyhow ... the book guided me back to my running shoes which were left aside because of chronic knee pain. Curious if this training method will help me ... so, still checking !!

Michael Bungay Stanier is a leading coaching expert, renowned keynote speaker and the founder and senior partner of Box of Crayons, a company that helps managers and leaders coach in 10 min or less. Oh, my.MEMO TO EVERY PERSON I’VE PRETENDED TO COACH OR MENTOR: I’m so, so sorry! Honest!Here’s why. This month I was a learner in a seminar with CEOs and board chairs. The highly energetic, wise and witty facilitator was Michael Bungay Stanier, the author of the hot-off-the-press book, “The Coaching Habit.”At a coffee break, halfway through the three-hour, how-to-coach practicum, I told Stanier that—already—the seminar was on my Top-10 list of best workshops ever attended (and I’ve attended my fair share). Here’s why I gave it a 10:Three memorable points on coaching:--BE LAZY: Stop working so hard.--BE CURIOUS: Stop giving so much advice.--BE OFTEN: Stop waiting to coach.And how’s this for role reversal? I’m usually reading snippets from books to my wife. She picked this up first and is still reading—and reminding me—on what effective coaching looks like, especially the “stop giving so much advice” poke-in-the-ribs. Ouch.Stanier notes that “Harland Howard said every great country song has three chords and the truth. This book gives you seven questions and the tools to make them an everyday way to work less hard and have more impact.” The seven essential questions:--The Kickstart Question--The AWE Question--The Focus Question--The Foundation Question--The Lazy Question--The Strategic Question--The Learning QuestionStanier says the best coaching question in the world is the AWE question: “And What Else?”In a four-minute drill with another board chair, I was instructed to ask four questions displayed on the seminar room screen. I am a board certified executive coach in the healthcare industry. For some time now I have been searching for a way to provide my doctors with coaching skills they can use within their clinical practices. Creating coaching cultures within organizations is currently a very hot topic in the coaching world, so when I became aware of Michael Stanier's book I immediately downloaded it to my kindle. I found his book to be remarkable because of its simplicity and powerful message. After struggling trying to decide how to impart all of a coaches knowledge and skill to my clients, Michael's book provided the realization that most clients do not need to be full fledged coaches to transform their existing practice culture to a coaching culture. Michael's book provides basic, yet simple, techniques that anyone can use to begin coaching their people.The most powerful message found in this book is that we must move away from being "problem solvers", and concentrate our efforts onbecoming "people developers". By doing so we challenge our people to become the best they can be, and in the process we become much better leaders.

I train coaches, especially the ones that like to give advice because it's easier. For a lot of reasons. As a result, I got a kick out of the haiku on page 59"Talk less and ask moreYour advice is not as goodAs you think it is"This really takes what, for many is a complex and intimidating process and simplifies it. I got the book on Saturday, and had it read before I went to bed. It's not short...it's just that good.Too many managers have been "trained" by imitating what their manager did and they replicate behaviors that really do not improve the development of their teams. But it gives them the sense of being in charge or control. Or the example I like to use is, "do you want to be a firefighter or a rainmaker?" Would you prefer to employ fire prevention, or always be putting out the fires after they have started?I'd recommend this to managers and to leaders looking for ideas on how to explain this coaching thing.

I read a lot, like 5 books a week, and I can't say enough about this book.First off when you pick up this book, it just feels light and beautiful.The way it's presented is just plain amazing and simple. The words and writing isn't clutter or "filled" up. You get actionable steps to put into practice for yourself and clients. Not many coaching books or books in general really get to the point. He doesn't talk about meaningless things that bore you.Michael knows exactly what he's talking about and demonstrates it beautifully with the way he describes the process of the coaching questions to use. Whether you're new or a vet to coaching, hell even if you don't coach, this book is more than just a book.Imagine a $3,000 3 day workshop packed into a home course that you can take anywhere. This is it!

One of the best books I have ever read--The author provides a nice and simple guide so that we can become better managers for those of us working through other people. I can definitively see myself in many of the examples about the things we do and don't do--I love the seven questions and his way about explaining each of them...as well as the ability to make our own notes.I sure have many habits I need to replace, with better ones.Strongly recommend it to anyone trying to become a better manager, a better teacher--or a better person.
