The writer reveals a lot about himself on page 72 when he writes “Attempts to quantify the game with newly concocted statistics tend to be futile. Among the most ludicrous is a new stat called WAR (Wins Above Replacement) that calculates the success of a team when a key player is replaced by a substitute.” He then proceeds to demonstrate a total lack of understanding of how WAR is intended to be used. So, if you are looking for insightful analysis to justify the title’s claim of “Baseball’s Greatest Dynasty", you won’t find it here where analysis is limited to wins, losses and batting average. When he introduces a new player to the narrative, he generally gives a 3 to 4 page biography of that player. This is approach is fine when writing about members of the Yankees during the subject seasons. Unfortunately, he also provides these mini biographies of non-Yankee Hall of Famers such as Bob Feller, Ted Williams and Hank Greenberg that include no new information to any baseball fan that would choose to read a book of this title. My guess is that 20% of the book consists of this uninformative filler. What he writes about the unsung stars of the Yankees from 1936-1939 would be the highlight of the book – if what he writes is true. Unfortunately, there are too many mistakes to be sure – Joe McCarthy is not the only manager to win four consecutive World Series (Casey Stengel won 5 straight), Bob Feller was not the only Hall of Famer on the 1938 Cleveland Indians (Earl Averill), Lou Gehrig was not the first player ever to hit four home runs in a game (first in the 20th century, but not the first ever), Lowell Crosley did not change the name of League Park to Crosley Field (Powel Crosley changed the name of Redlands Field to Crosley Field). When writing of Spud Chandler, he points out that “Every one of his 109 victories was a complete game” which would be an extraordinary statistical oddity that I am sure I would have heard before - if it was true. A quick look at Chandler’s record at Baseball Reference.com shows that that claim is false (1939 – 3 wins, no CG). Later in the book the writer compounds his false claim when he tells of a game when Chandler earned a win in relief.Too many errors, too much filler and a rejection of 40 years of serious baseball analytics make this book unworthy of the time to read it.

Very poorly written, and factually inaccurate in too many places to count. For instance, if you're a baseball fan, you'll marvel at a reference to "Evers to Tinkers to Chance" (quoted verbatim), which would be laughable if it weren't so sad. Terrible book, and there are 50 others that chronicle this time much better. Don't waste your money.

It put the Yankees in the context on the depression era thirties. There was too little about the day to grind of the long baseball season. There was too little personal information about the Yankee players. There was very little information about critical opposing players.Overall it was an easy and enjoyable read.

I loved this book!! I literally loved the almost day by day account of the Yankees games played during this historic run. Literally you can smell the scent of freshly cut grass and the crack of the bat as baseball's Iron Horse sends another one over the outfield wall. If your a fan of the Yankees or just baseball in general you'll want to read this book!!

Beautifully written story of the Yankee dynasty which began when Joe Dimaggio joined the team from the San Francisco Seals. Covers the race to the pennant in the four year period when the Yankees won every World Series. Cohen makes the games come alive.

Great inside anecdotes about great players and interesting characters.

I got this as a Christmas gift for a big Yankee fan from NY, he loved it!!

Great read!!!
