About the Author
Since 1973, Rick has spent about four months a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. Rick Steves books are always filled with quality information and answers to your travel questions, I love this one as much as the many other books for different cities that I've bought from the Rick Steves line. You have everything you need in this book to plan your trip from airport information, ground transportation, hotel recommendations with prices and mapped locations to must see sights. While I havent taken my trip to London yet, I did use his Rome book to spend nearly two weeks in that city with my mother, first time in Europe, and had not one problem at any stage of the trip. If this London book is anything like the Rome book I am confidant my trip will be great, I highly recommend this and Rick Steves other travel books.
++ Good guidebook - Sufficiently complete, but not totally comprehensive. For example, compared to the Michelin guide, R Steves has about 1/2 to 1/3 the number of churches listed. Nonetheless, gives a good resource.++ Best feature - best feature is the light weight nature - printed in black/white (a disappointment perhaps) but that allows for thinner paper and less weight. We carry the book with us, so size and weight is a consideration for us.++ R Steves Resources are Comprehensive - In addition to the guidebook, R Steves company has resources (some free via smart-phone app) that are very nice (e.g., audio tours of significant buildings and sights). Download the tours before going.++ Editorial bias - you do get R Steves' editorial view and slant on "how you should travel," and "what you should see." If you like R Steves' philosophy you will like this book. We prefer a little less editorial, and a little more "we trust you to make your own judgments."++ Steves vs. Michelin vs. Blue Guide - When we lived in Europe we used Michelin guides exclusively. There were the best bar none. The current Michelin guide for London is vintage 2015/early 2016. The R Steves guide is late 2016/early 2017. Therefore, we gave Steves the edge. Michelin guide is printed in color on heavier stock, so same size book is heavier and has fewer pages of text/content. Beyond that there are toss-up pro's and con's for each version. Michelin is a bit less editorial but not a much content. Michelin has more details and numbers of sites for some categories (e.g., 3x number of historic churches than Steves). Michelin hotel and dining guides are separate; however, R Steves hotel and dining guides in this guidebook are "slim to none" (only a few highlights along the lines of Steves saying "these are my 3-4 favorites"). Eventually, we chose Steves because of more pages/content, lighter weight, more current info --- but it was "winner by a nose" choice, just did not want to carry two guidebooks. Blue Guide to London is much more comprehensive on background and history of key sites, etc. However, Blue Guide is not current for contemporary info such as museum times, etc.++Bottom Line/Summary - We chose R Steves guide to carry with us, and Blue Guide to use as the historical resource we keep in the hotel room. Candidly, having lived in London, I believe you would be well served by any one of the three in my opinion.
We had other London guidebooks, but this was by far the best for practical information about what to do in London and how and when to do it. Great insights and background info. I did disagree with his recommendation to use the extensive bus service to get around London. Even with car restrictions, the traffic is terrible and you sit in bumper-to-bumber traffic way too long. The tube was a breeze. Still, two weeks in London was better to have had this book.
Love Rick Steves, we always use him to plan our trips and it has saved us much time, money and headaches. Without his help we would never have been able to plan our trips to Europe and had a blast there. His books have helped us to avoid the horrible organized tour way of visiting Europe.We used his London book extensively during our previous visits. We bought this as it was the latest and will use it in our next visit this year.
We always grab the Rick Steves books for any European destination that we are planning to go to, the books give tips and advice on where to stay what to do and what to avoid as being not really worth your time or money depending on what you are shorter on? We are now going to Europe with kids and of course its covered in the books. On a side note we refer to Rick Steves as Uncle Rick because they are so helpful its like getting advice from your uncle (the one you like). Keep up the great work and Thank You!
Love how Steves shares his views on London and where things can be found. I love that he has walks you can go on by yourself "mapped out" and ready. I also love how he rates things good better best so you know what sites are worth the money to go. His insight about big things like day trips from London, where to stay, what to eat down to the money Lobdoners use has made me more at ease about getting the most of my trips. Will purchase more of his books for future trips.
Rick is always the best! Terrific, detailed info that makes trip planning a lot easier than other guide books do.
I can't travel anywhere in Europe without my Rick Steve's guides. I don't always agree with his recommendations, I always adjust to my own tastes but his books have been indispensable for practical and background info. I used his Paris book for a trip last year and had to get the London guide for my trip this year. Its perfect for figuring out your way around London, what time things open/close, museum guides etc. I always carry my guide in my purse. Its honestly one of the most important things I take with me for long 16 hour day of sight-seeing. My phone gets poor data signals when I'm in Europe, but I can always count on my handy Rick Steve's guide.
