Read this in the bookstore but I bought it online because the price was right. I've been a C# developer for last 10 years now but never had time to really learn all of the advance concepts. This book dives WAY deep into HOW things work and how to design your classes to really take advantage of concepts like iterators, nullable types, generics, delegates, LINQ, asynchronous programming concepts you name it. I also like that he shows the progression of these concepts as the .NET library and C# language mature in newer versions. At the time of this comment I've read half way through this book and I learned a lot! Highly recommend this book to C# developers who want to take their knowledge to pro status.

What I love about this book is that it not just teaches you entire toolset this language offers but the reasons behind the additions, modifications and transformations it goes trough in each version.Not a beginners book though, it does not contain any of the basics you'll need to know if it's your first programming language. Recommended for people who actually want to become C# gurus.

Should have bought this book a long time ago. Jon Skeet is extremely good at explaining how the C# language works and to be aware of the subtle differences between the various features. His examples are very effective at describing what he means especially when obscure topics can be challenging to grasp.

Really helped me understand the evolution of the C# language. Helped me better visualize and think through what I understand about C# and what I don't. Will be buying the next edition that comes out in Oct 2018

If you are looking for a history of the company and its rise to the forefront of Wall Street titans, this is the book. The authors had incredible access such as two years of interviews with Schwarzman himself. They exhaustively go through each deal, the personalities behind them, the infighting and the external negotiations that allowed Blackstone to separate itself from the rest of the pack. Considering the privileged access, I thought the authors criticized the firm and its leaders when appropriate.If you are looking for more of a general finance book or a thrilling read, this is not that book. Barbarians at the Gate is better for pure entertainment. Do not expect the same sort of roller coaster here but do expect a well written and comprehensive summary of the good and the bad within the company.I also do like the authors' strong defense of private equity in general. They do write for a publication called The Deal so they are biased but they provide coherent and important arguments showing the importance of strong investor control in the functioning of well managed companies.

Very readable book. I went thru the 300+ pages in five days of on and off reading, and it was very interesting to finally understand the mechanics behind some of the biggest LBO's ever. Also I learned a couple of financial things I did not know, and after saw the movie Wall Street with a different mindset, which made me understand it better. Having said that, the book was written in 2011-2012 and so it's dated. A new edition with the results of the years 2011-2014 would be interesting to analyze the results of the re-structuring these companies had since then.

This is one of the best-written books on the subject of finance (to use the term in its broadest sense) I have read. What makes this particular book a how-to on this sort of literature is simply this: everything in it is what as a reader I would like to know, and nothing else. The authors review the history of Blackstone through the eyes of the people who have made Blackstone what it is today. It paints a clear picture of the main characters, their background and motivations; competitive and regulatory landscape; the structures (sometimes fairly complex but never beyond comprehension) of the actual deals involved, as well as profits and losses. However, the story always moves at a very brisk pace, never getting bogged down in any more detail than strictly necessary. That, in my opinion, is the most impressive achievement of this book. I read the whole thing in three days because I simply couldn't put it down. Reading through the notes, I found out that it took three laborious years to write it. I came away feeling a personal sense of gratitude to the authors for their work and regret that there was no more pages left to read.

Riveting? No, some parts were tedious to an extreme. Readable? Yes, with fairly tight explanations of finance and techniques from the '80s to the present. My guess is the book should be a "must read" as an education process for the business. It will remain on my Kindle as a reference. It's a history lesson and a primer at the same time.

I am a huge fan of biographies on successful and interesting people. I thought this book on Steve Schwarzman would be one of those. I wasn't entirely wrong. The book does chronological many of the Blackstone deals and it is interesting to see how the company came into fruition but the details and interesting facts about Steve Schwarzman are simply not there. I'm not sure what reader would find this book too interesting but I am an avid reader of business books and I think this book was just ok. Thanks

This book is a fairly quick read that lays out the history of Blackstone and the origins of some of its spinoffs. Overall, I would say this book reads like a reporter's account of the facts of the situation. It does not have anywhere near the level of detail of an insider or someone that had intimate knowledge of the doings or workings of this firm. For that reason, i was a little disappointed with this book as it did not describe what has made this one of the great players in finance. Sure there is discussion of the leadership's obsessions with this or that and some color of the roles some of the senior players had in the direction of the firm, but I struggled to identify what was the critical element, other than the leadership's, or more specifically Schwartzman's, relentless pursuit of success that made this a great firm. It certainly appeared the author relied a great deal or was heavily influenced by Schwartzman's account and as such I was left wanting and believing as with so many other books written by reporters, not industry experts or insiders, that they lacked an understanding of the true dynamic within the organization. In the author's defense, there is a fair amount of criticism of the firm throughout the book. The most critical part revealed the culture of the firm which is described as a revolving door where talented individuals are not nurtured, but sooner or later get frustrated and trade away. Not too unusual on Wall Street, but the author describes this turnover as far more excessive than normal and given some of the talent that left, it is pretty hard to believe Blackstone has achieved all it has given some of these departures. Its a quick read that would be helpful to understand the firm if you are doing business with them, but this certainly would not qualify as a definitive account of this remarkable firm.

Very clever. I had the common belief these take over merchants we greedy SOB's (and some of the CEO's are still pretty disgusting in my book) But the author brings out some surprising facts and figures that made me truly re-evaluate my convictions. Excellent material. It will live on my shelf for a long time and be read again.

The authors explain how the eye works and examine the paintings of many artists to illustrate several things: the use of perceptual knowledge in creating the painting, the presence or lack of eye disease in the use of distortion, shading, colors. Each chapter deals with a different facet of visual perception and how it is employed in painting. A book for someone interested in the way artists create. Many fine illustrations.

It is well presented with very good pictures. However, I am surprised that the authors -- two eye doctors -- allowed it to be printed in such small font size. It is uncomfortable to read. As for the information explaining the insets, I have to use a magnifier glass to read it. I have normal vision with my glasses and can read other printed matter easily.However, I am grateful for the precise information and the beautiful presentation of this volume.

Not only does it dispel myths about some artists that were long regarded to have problems with their vision, the book also educates us about the science of vision and anatomy of the eyes. Am reading this slowly in order to enjoy every part of it fully.

I used this book as a helpful reference (among others) in my talk to a science society entitled "The Physiology of Vision and Art". I am a scientist and amateur painter. In retirement I have taught art and I lecture on the relationships of art and science.

The Artist's Eyes were a gift to my husband who is an artist and art historian. He is reading through the chapters carefully and generally finds them insightful, particularly the ophthalmic observations. He is more critical of some of the art historical interpretation. The art historical analysis undertaken through an ophthalmic lens is an important contribution to the understanding of art.

I read a library copy of this wonderful book when it was published 10 years ago and have thought about it and quoted from it more times than I can count. I was so happy to find the Kindle version as a "Daily Deal" and to reread it. It's just as good as I remember.The author is a woman who got dealt a terrible hand. Her husband (a respected and beloved State Patrol officer)was killed in a car wreck, leaving her to raise four children aged 10 and under. In the midst of her pain and panic, she managed to keep her off-beat sense of humor and to observe and remember what brought comfort to her in grief and what DIDN'T. Her husband had planned to become a Unitarian/Universalist minister. Seeking a way to channel her need to help others, she attended seminary in his place and became chaplain to the Maine Warden Service.It's the story of her early life and how it led her (surprisingly) to an adult life as the wife of a cop and the mother of four. It's the story of her husband's death and how she refused the role of "plucky widow" and how she and her children went on living - never forgetting the man who had been so important to them, but finding ways to cope and to honor his memory.It's also the story of a group of law enforcement officers who remain quietly in the background until disaster strikes. At that time, they become the most important people in the world. We think of game wardens as lucky folks with stress-free jobs who get to spend all day communing with nature. In reality, they spend most of their time dealing with people and there are some rough customers out in the woods. It is statistically one of the most dangerous law enforcement jobs in the world and they wear guns and body armor for a reason. They also coordinate search and rescue missions. Some end well; others end in tragedy. It's a stressful job that's frequently heart-breaking. Kate's role is to listen and comfort worried parents, grieving spouses, and the wardens who can't always leave the job behind when they go off duty.This is a beautifully written, thought provoking book by a woman you wish you could have for a friend. Well written guide to the fastest growing sport! Prem almost seems to be with you as he outlines techniques and strategies. He explains what is right but also what can be wrong. Hr provides numerous drills to help you improve your play. In addition to the descriptions, the book has clear illustrations or photographs showing precisely what is being introduced or discussed. Since the first chapters concentrate on the opening portions of the game (serve, return, third shot), it is great for people just learning to play. But sine those same chapters get into advanced detail, they can help most of us who play. I have recommended this book to a number of pickleball players I know for those reasons. The book is well worth the price.

A fair and objective review. First there are many negative reviews about his constant comments about his self promotion and overly conversational writing. These comments have merit. It becomes tiring wading through this type of text to get to the point. Also the print text is larger than what you would find in most books. All this combined makes the book larger than it would be if the book was written to be just an informative book as other Pickleball books are written. Not with standing the previous comments, the book does contain information that other Pickleball books does not have that can add to your ability to become a better player. Same goes for his Web postings. I first read the book from the library, but later downloaded the Kindle version for reference. So that is the plus and minus of the his book. John

This is a very helpful book for improving your Pickleball game. It contains instructions for executing different shots, drills to practice to improve, and strategies to implement in your game. All this in a very conversational writing style where he basically takes the reader into one of his clinics and even shares tips from some of his private lessons. This book is excellent and was not at all boring to me. He has a good sense of humor as well that makes for a very enjoyable read. Excellent book!! I played racquetball for 30+ years before I picked up this odd little game. I have been playing religiously now for nearly a year. I was stuck at about a level 3, then I picked up this book and after reading and applying the strategies in it, the large an diverse group I play with (levels 1 through 5) all told me that they don't know what I did but I went up a complete level (to a 4) almost overnight. The level 5 players are now asking me to play with them. Would I recommend this book? ABSOLUTELY!!!!!

Good, fast read and easy to understand. it does not seem like a how to book, but it will improve your game. Read and practice. You must practice outside a game as well as on the court playing. Playing without practice ( outside a game) will not give you the best results.

For anyone who is interested in improving their game, this book will help. There is some self-promotion throughout, but then again, we live in a marketing society. Even with this in mind, the book provides valuable insights into how to improve your game. There is little hand-holding here, just the facts so if you want to make the best use of the advice offered, you will need to get out and practice.If practicing is not your thing, you can still make some progress by learning what to focus on while you are playing. What is the best way to serve? What is the best return of serve? Why is dinking necessary? These questions and more are answered.The book takes a no nonsense approach to helping Pickleballers improve the way THEY play the game. It is well worth the read and getting the practice tips.

A great primer for newer players as well as a review for those with more experience. It covers the basic strategies and suggests drills that should help players adopt these techniques. Prem explains why his suggestions are effective.Prem uses an interesting format, of guiding you through one of his weekend clinics. I read all three of these novels. The writer is highly skilled with words and certainly has some interesting ideas. However, his motives for writing these books seemed, to me, quite transparent. I've never liked books with an obvious agenda, and these are no exception. Pullman's apparent mission is to vilify religion in general (with the possible exception of Wicca) and the Christian church in particular. The whole "evil priesthood" scene all over again. Yawn.The salvation of Pullman's fantasy world lies in a young woman having ... relations with her lover. In other words, in the book's view, eating the apple. This metaphor displays a lamentable lack in understanding as to the true concept of original sin, which concept has nothing to do with sex. It's a common misinterpretation, but an author of Pullman's stature, writing a book series like this one, should know better.Pullman works hard to give his book a tragic ending, but it left me way short on tears. Not that I can't be moved by the separation of lovers, but one sees this coming for miles and miles, and the reasons for the enforced misery are quite weak.I very much enjoyed reading the Harry Potter series, both for my daughter and for myself, though it does also have some serious logical weaknesses. Nevertheless, the weaknesses are much less obvious than in The Dark Materials series, and the stories, though rich in moral content, lack the odor of the vendetta so prevalent in Dark Materials.Unless you like reading books with a bone to pick, give this one a miss. You'll spend your time much more pleasantly elsewhere.

Only have had it for about 1 hour but it works great!strong wire, strong grip and just the right length Only con is when I was tightening on to my bed frame I did it to tight and started to hear a slight cracking noise so don't over tightin on wide objects besides that its working great!ordering one for my wife's side

Can I mention that I love this thing? It's awesome!! I got an adjustable bed and I just wanna lay flat on my back with my feet up and not have to look either direction and I have to hold my arms up to watch my phone. So with this I can just attach it to my table and hanging over my face basically and lay there and watched TV. It's so strong I'm not even worried that it's going to drop on me or drop my phone or anything.

The material is very solid which is great bc it stays in one place and doesnt move but also is a little too solid meaning its tough to move easy, you have to really give it a tug. I suggest when bending the neck that you hold it by just the neck, not one hand on the base or balljoint. It takes a lot of force to bend the neck...as it should, and the force may be too much for the base or balljoint.

This phone holder is stronger than I expected. I thought it would be slightly flimsy, but it is actually pretty solid. The only thing is with it being so solid, it is a little stiff to move around and get into position. But once in position, it is very reliable and you don't have to worry it or whatever it is holding slipping or falling out. I use it to watch movies while I lay in bed. I used to hold them with my hand, now I can put my hands anywhere I need them. Hehe. But it!
