The Wild Robot Escapes, by Peter Brown

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—The lovable robot, Roz (The Wild Robot), was last seen being ripped away from her goose son, Brightbill, and hauled unwillingly back to the factory for the Makers to repair and reassign her. She is reactivated on Hilltop Farm, where Mr. Shareef expects her to tend to farm duties, including caring for the many cows and making repairs around the farm. She is programmed to obey orders, including those from Mr. Shareef's children, Jaya and Jad. Roz is homesick for her prior life on the remote island with her goose son, and all of her other animal friends, but she feels trapped, and fears Mr. Shareef will find out her secret—that she is "defective" and able to think, plan, and speak the languages of the animals. Roz is torn: while she enjoys helping on the farm and spending time with the children, she desires a reunion with her son even more. With the children's help and blessing, and the cows' assistance, Roz develops an escape plan. Readers need not have read the first installment to enjoy this sequel, though fans will root for Roz and Brightbill's reunion. Brown's illustrative talent is featured in black-and-white drawings throughout. VERDICT Science fiction meets fantasy in this delightful sequel that gives readers a unique look into what technology could someday have in store. A must-buy for any middle grade collection.—Michele Shaw, Quail Run Elementary School, San Ramon, CA

I'm a 37 yr old guy. I picked this up because it sounded cool! And it definitely is cool. I had high expectations for it based on the reviews. It was a very UNIQUE and enjoyable story, written very well, with great characters.Very minor spoilers to follow: I took one star away only because it sort of vilifies humans. And it gets quite violent towards the end, where some of our main characters as well as our favorite robot are suffering at the hands of humans. I understand that we humans encroach upon and destroy nature and it affects a lot of natural habitats, and we need to be more mindful of that. I had simply hoped that in the story humans would maybe learn a lesson, or there would be at least one good person. I guess the author could be trying to teach these principles to kids by making the robot set the example, but I don't know if kids are going to relate to a robot as much as they would a human, or human child. I think may be the robot could have used a young human friend. Maybe I'm wrong. The robot certainly is an adequate role model to follow. And there is a sequal coming out. Maybe in the sequal the robot will have a human friend, or teach humans how to be more mindful of nature. In conclusion, as a parent I would just be slightly concerned that my child might come away from this story with bit of hatred or disdain for mankind. Some children might, while others might not. You be the judge. Im just not sure if the idea of humans being muderous villians, with no redemption, is the kind of message you want to be sending to a child at a very young age. In the end I would recommend this to people of all ages because it is a good tale and it's very original. Just maybe read it before you give it to your child.

Review from 10-year old boy: I loved the book. Robots are awesome. Same thing with the wilderness. If you combine them together, you get this book. This book is so good it's hard to put down. I read for two hours and 30 minutes straight and could've kept going. That's a new record for me. With the books I used to read, I could only read for an hour. One of the other reasons I like this book is because none of the main characters die. Up until I finished the book, I knew it was a best seller. My dad really liked the book too.

Summary: When a ship carrying 500 robots sinks in a hurricane, only one of the robots survives. She is ROZZUM Unit 7134, better known as Roz, and she washes up on an island inhabited only by animals. As she explores the island to learn more about her new home, the animals fear they are being invaded by a monster. Gradually, they learn that she likes to help them, and they, in turn, help her. When she adopts an orphaned gosling and builds a nest for herself and her new son, she becomes a full-fledged member of the community. Her building and fire-making abilities save the animals during an unusually frigid winter. Roz’s happy world is shattered, though, when her robot past catches up with her. War comes to the island as the animals seek to protect her. Can this robot really be “wild”, or must she be true to her automaton nature? 288 pages; grades 3-7.Pros: Charlotte’s Web meets The Iron Giant in this debut novel from illustrator Peter Brown. The story is touching without being sappy or emotional, and thought-provoking without being preachy. Brown’s own illustrations are generously inserted throughout the text. If I were on the Newbery committee, this would be going to the top of my list.Cons: The ending is a little dark. Until the last few chapters, I thought this would be a perfect read-aloud for grades 2 and up. Now I would say grade 3 or even 4 would be the youngest. Read it first if you’re not sure.

This review is on behalf of my youngest(7). After struggling with reading early on, she learned to love it and when she read The Wild Robot last year, it became her favorite book. This has been her first experience of anticipating a sequel and it lived up to her expectations in every way. She really enjoyed following Roz and Brightbill from accidental beginning to triumphant end(?), and we had an interesting conversation centered around this book about what makes you you and how portable that might be. After staying up late to finish the sequel and then talk my ear off about it, she locked the two books in a special case usually reserved for dolls to protect them from any kind of threat.I'm not sure there's a star rating for that, but you get the picture.

For as long as I can remember, I--like the author--have been obsessed with robots, even more with robots interacting with the natural world in some bizarre capacity. So when I saw this novel, I couldn't wait to read it. Luckily, my lovely wife gifted it to me for Christmas, so here we are, me having read it.In general, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It definitely feels like an extended children's illustrated storybook, and that's not a bad thing. However, it might take a bit for some folks to really get into the groove of the novel--as, for a kids book, the real "story" takes a bit to truly get moving.Along those lines, this is definitely for younger readers. But some parents / guardians / those-reading-the-book-aloud-to-someone might be caught off guard by the surprising violence near the book's end. For such a fun and cute story--even with some small moments of natural darkness--the climactic chapters seemed a bit much and out of place for such a story.Still, it has solid writing and a fun story, and the artwork is truly gorgeous. Brown's work is fantastic, and I'm glad to see that his long-form storytelling is almost as solid as his short form. It might not have been the norm for him, but I'll be there to read his next middle-grade novel, too.

I introduced myself to the librarian at my public library and asked for some book suggestions. This was on her list and I know own a few copies for my 4th and 5th graders. It is very sweet, with a touch of sadness. It is realistic to our world in many ways. An older reader may pick up on more themes than a younger one. On the surface it has a terrific beginning and middle with a thought-provoking end. Dig deeper and it is about fear of differences and what a loving family can look like, and much, much more.

As I wipe a few tears from my eyes, I wonder how in the world do I review the final book in a series that took over 4 million words and nearly 12,000 pages to complete the tale (wikipedia). In this saga of good vs. evil, you expect some characters you've grown to love while following this series for years will play their part in the Pattern and die. I tried to not think about that as I read A Memory of Light and just allowed the story to unfold as Jordan intended it to be told, albeit through another writer, Sanderson. This was a (mostly) satisfying conclusion to the series in that it tied up loose threads from the myriad of storylines. I wanted more though, that's where the mostly comes in! I suppose though, that one of the first rules of Being a Master Story Teller (tm) is to leave your audience wanting just a little bit more and in that, Jordan greatly succeeded. He created a world where we really began to care about the characters, to think about them while away from the created world. If you've never read a Wheel of Time book, this is NOT the place to begin. Do not pass Go, Do not collect $200. Start with The Eye of The World, originally published in 1990, and read the series in order, all 4 million+ words. It's a rich tapestry, intricately woven to pull you in. The characters are fantastic, and watching them develop throughout the series is truly a treat. Even if you don't want to actually read the series but are kind of interested, you might consider listening to the audiobooks. The voice actors truly deliver amazing performances (a man and woman read respective parts). It took me quite a while to read this final installment for a few reasons: finishing grad school, wanting to savor the last book and some parts just kind of drag in the middle. I know the author is setting the stage, but I really didn't need to read for the hundredth time about the forces of good being overrun by Trollocs. I get it. The Shadow has nearly inexhaustible forces to block in our heroes so someone can come in and save the day.Rand's fight with the Dark One was very different from what I expected, though I'm not sure how else it could have gone with a spirit entity.Criticisms aside, this really was a fantastic conclusion to the series. It was full of hair-raising moments, chilling moments, awwww moments, gasp-out-loud moments, dread-inducing moments, stomach-dropping moments, eyes-bug out-of your-head moments, LOL moments and teary moments. It's quite a wild ride and you won't regret sticking with the series to its completion.Since I don't want to give spoilers, there's really not much more I can say except for if you like epic fantasy series and choose to make the time to read long ones, you will be the richer for having read this one. There's quite a lot of plot a child will not be able to grasp (we'll leave out the sheer size of the series for that consideration), but older teens and adults who enjoy fantasy will likely relish diving into this series. Highly recommend.Sensuality: It's the end of the world, people, there's nothing in this one that I remember.Rating: 5 stars

Well here we are and it is finally over. It has been so long and yet not long enough.₪₪₪My Wheel of time journey lasted:₪₪₪14 months - with my great friends at BB&BThere were 11308 pagesOver 4 Million WordsA staggering 19 days, 5 hours and 25 minutes of audio amazing audioWith 147 Unique PoVs and 1379 total PoVsAnd a staggering cast of over 2200 charactersThe world building is immense and I’m not sure anyone does that better than Robert Jordan did. Although I believe that Sanderson might give him a run for his money. The characters were infuriating. This is one of the only books series I’ve read where I’ve spent 80% of the time in various states of dissatisfaction with most of the characters for some reason or another but still liked the overall story. One of my biggest pet peeves of the entire series was Rand and his Three loves (view spoiler) Min is awesome though and one of the few characters in the series I was never upset with. There is really no way that after a journey like this you won’t have a plethora of feelings. If you are a huge fantasy reader then I think this is one of those series you have to tackle sometime in your life. There are a few slower books that ooze of worldbuilding, political maneuvering and characters but no serious plot movement and then there are the final 4 books of the series that are amazing and it feels like everything happened in.There are things I loved in this series and things I really hated but overall I enjoyed the journey I went on. Some people survived that I didn’t think would. Some people died that I thought were safe and it was heartbreaking. But then there are those heroic moments that original cast from the Two Rivers Rand, Mat, Perrin, Egwene and Nynaeve got to have and each one shone bright at the end no matter how they were dragged into their destiny.Still it is the end and for some of the side characters I wanted a little more info, hell for some of the main characters I wanted to know more. It isn’t perfect, there isn’t an epilogue set 5 or 10 or 20 years later and I really wanted one. I was very interested in the directions that some of the people left were going to take. But in an epic this big I guess it is impossible to tie up every last thing so I’ve filled in a few things for myself with some of the hopes and dreams I had for the remaining characters. My hat is off to Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson for undertaking this massive fantasy series. It is an amazing journey that I might one day take again because the wheel weaves as the wheel wills and there is no beginning and there are no endings, and never will be endings, to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was an ending.

First - I thank Robert Jordan posthumously for creating such a complex, intriguing world. You will be missed!Second - I thank Brandon Sanderson for faithfully completing this incredible body of work!Third - this is the most incredible story I have ever read. It is difficult for me to fathom the creative talent it took to give birth to such an intricate tale that combined all of the virtues and flaws of mankind with such emotion, hope, desperation and humor. The characters are so multidimensional that at the end of the last book, i feel like I'm saying goodbye to some of my best friends! the story is over but the characters will be with me for a very long time!

Until now. I thought about trying to be very clinical and cold while writing this review, just give a few stiff comments like “ yes, it’s a very good read “ etc. but I couldn’t. I’m a reader that GOES to where I’m reading about. I become the characters I’m reading about, hear their different voices, see their different faces. Especially if the book is this well written. Dare I say it... it seemed I could feel their emotions. The very best of the series, this book is so well written, and the story so amazing, it’s hard to describe. I dare you to pick it up and not love it. The worst thing I can say about this book and really the entire series is that it’s over. My next plan concerning my reading, is to start re-reading this entire series immediately.

Review

"Adaptogenic herbs can be most useful in the quest for health in our stressful society. David Winston and Steven Maimes explain and champion the use and benefits of these important herbs." (James A. Duke, author of The Green Pharmacy)"This is a much needed book, an important update to the materia medica of North America, and constitutes important continuing education on a wide variety of new herbs entering into the North American herbal marketplace." (Paul Bergner, Medical Herbalism, Winter 2007)"It's about time a book took on the subject of immune herbs, and this one does an excellent job of explaining why they are so effective at combating stress-induced illness. The text is very easy to read and understand, but still contains the latest scientific research, all well referenced." (American Herb Association, Vol. 23:1, April 08)“Brilliant! Fully researched, full of information not readily available, as well as being practical and easy to digest. The authors have managed to blend the traditional and recent scientific information into a fully comprehensive and informative text. This will become a classic, a definitive work on this most important group of medicinal plants.” (Rosemary Gladstar, founder of United Plant Savers and author of Herbal Healing for Women)“Essential reading for all involved with adaptogens, whether practitioners or consumers. This is the first comprehensive guide to adaptogens based on good herbalism, good science, and NO hype! A truly excellent book.” (David Hoffmann, BSc, FNIMH, author of Medical Herbalism and Herbal Prescriptions after 50)“With Adaptogens, David Winston and Steven Maimes have finally made this important healing concept accessible to a wider audience. We need adaptogens--gentle remedies that, over time, have the powerful effect of restoring and protecting our health on many levels. David Winston’s vast clinical and practical knowledge of herbs adds tremendously to the value of the book.” (Christopher Hobbs, author of Handmade Herbal Medicines and Natural Therapy for Your Liver)"There is so much valuable information packed into this volume that I am grateful to have my own copy and will keep it close by as a very handy reference" (Marjorie Tietjen, Price-Pottenger: Journal of Health and Healing, Volume 34 / Number 2, September 20)

HEALTH / NUTRITION “We need adaptogens for their powerful effect of restoring and protecting our health. Finally, this important healing concept is made accessible to a wider audience.” --CHRISTOPHER HOBBS, author of Handmade Herbal Medicines and Natural Therapy for Your Liver “Adaptogens are destined to play an increasingly important role in the future of health care. This book provides an excellent introduction to and comprehensive overview of their traditional uses and of the science supporting their safety and therapeutic benefits.” --MARK BLUMENTHAL, founder and executive director of the American Botanical Council “Brilliant! . . . a definitive work on this most important group of medicinal plants.” --ROSEMARY GLADSTAR, founder of United Plant Savers and author of Herbal Healing for Women We all deal with stress every day, and every day our bodies strive to adapt and stay balanced and healthy. In Adaptogens, authors David Winston and Steven Maimes provide a comprehensive look into adaptogens, nontoxic herbs such as ginseng, eleuthero, and licorice, that produce a defensive response to stress in our bodies. These rejuvenating herbs and tonics help the body to “adapt” to the many influences it encounters. They increase stamina and counter the normal effects of aging and thus are becoming important tools in sports medicine and in the prevention and treatment of chronic fatigue and other stress-related disorders. Winston and Maimes present the historical uses of these herbal remedies in India, Russia, China, and the Americas and explain how they work and why they are so effective at combating stress-induced illness. Monographs for each adaptogen also present the latest scientific research and include the origin, traditional use, actions, properties, preparation, and dosage for each herb. DAVID WINSTON, RH(AHG), is an herbalist and ethnobotanist who has practiced Cherokee, Chinese, and Western herbal medicine since 1969. He is a founding member of the American Herbalists Guild, an internationally known lecturer on the topic of herbal medicine, and the president of Herbalist and Alchemist, Inc., a company that manufactures over 300 herbal products. He is the author of Herbal Therapeutics and Saw Palmetto for Men & Women and coauthor of Herbal Therapy and Supplements, and he lives in Washington, New Jersey. STEVEN MAIMES, the former owner of an herbal products business in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a researcher, freelance writer, and principal of SALAM Research in Rochester, New Hampshire.

I became extremely ill with an auto-immune disease and this book saved my life. Remember-treating yourself is safer with plants than pharmaceuticals because you would need to consume vast amounts to harm yourself. So, you can order the herbs, mix and match and see how you feel. You have time to experiment. I ordered the best quality organic bulk herbs and made strong tea. At first I hemmed and hawed about spending money on herbs, but since I could not walk and thought I would die, I decided this was not the time to be cheap! I made my tea with Ashwagandha and anti-inflammatory herbs, and another tea with medicinal mushrooms: Reishi, Shiitake, and Maitake. I was also seeing an MD. I was seeing an herbalist, and I double checked his work, and realized he made a mistake. I read this book and made my own cure. I tried one more herbalist who tried to scare me. She made it sound like making my own teas was insane. I am an intelligent person, and a good researcher, and when I called her to tell her I cured myself, she told me I was unrealistic. I could not believe it! I think she is jealous of David Winston. When I told my MD that I was using herbs, he laughed me out of his office. I thought I should give him my herbalists number, and they could commiserate! The pharmaceuticals helped me survive by masking the pain, but they made me so dizzy I was hanging on the walls! Not cute... When you are so sick like this, it is no joke, especially when you feel like you are fighting with your(paid)healers! Guess what? You still have to fight! I became full of faith in myself and trusted my intuition. I told myself I could do it. My symptoms are 95% gone. My MD explained it away by saying the pharmaceuticals had built up in my system and so that is why I felt good. He said if I did not take them, the pain would return. NOPE. I am drinking my two teas 3x's a day. The tree cannot be felled with one blow, so I will keep drinking them until I am 100%. I needed a cane during the worst part of it, and had a permanent handicapped parking tag! If you believe in yourself and can read, count drops from a tincture bottle, or can boil water for tea, you can heal yourself!!!! I must admit the day I stopped taking my pharmaceuticals, it was a leap of faith and I prayed, but then I was fine!!! Thank you David and Steven, because you saved my life! (Along with some Divinity!)P.S. There is also a pet section which I am using!

An important reference book for anyone who appreciates plant medicine - ashwaghanda has changed my entire mental and physical state which is why I bought this book - to learn more about adaptogens. I could only find so much info online - books are still the best source of deep information and learning. I highly recommend this book and the price was great from this seller. Shipping took a very long time but that didn’t really matter in this case.

I really enjoyed this book. I have only recently become interested in Herbal healing and this was a great source of information and clarification. My sister recently went into remission from rheumatoid arthritis. Her doctor told her to just "stop taking the Tramadol", the adjunct pain medication she had been taking for 10 years. It was horrible. I actually used the information in the book to suggest some tinctures she could use to get her through the withdrawal her doctor seemed to be totally unaware of.

Fantastic book full of great information that's really accessible. I would recommend it to anyone who's curious about Adaptogens. It's chocked full of herbal information, too, which I didn't expect. I really thought the authors would just focus on Adaptogens. If I could give this book 6 stars, I would.

I have a wide selection of books related to herbs, but this is the only one that I know of that deals specifically with adaptogens, and since everyone could benefit from boosting his immune system and helping the body to effectively deal with stress, this is one of those books that may help anyone to enjoy better health. The main adaptogens covered in this book are American ginseng, amla, ashwagandha, asian ginseng, astragalus, cordyceps, dang shen, eleuthero, guduchi, he shou wu, holy basil, jiaogulan, licorice, lycium, prince seng, reishi, rhaponticum, rhodiola, shisandra, shatavari, shilajit - interestingly enough most of them seem to be either part of Ayurveda or Traditional Chinese Medicine, and there is not much mention of herbs that may be traditionally used in western herbalism. With the herbs covered in this book, he author has listed the history of the herb, where the herb grows, modern uses of the herb, dosage and safety, and there is a mention of few related studies. Herbs are also grouped in relation to different health issues, so you'll find herbs that may help with stress, those that may be helpful for breathing problems, herbs that may be helpful with athletic performance, those that may be helpful when dealing with cardio-vascular problems, those that may be helpful with musculo-skeletal problems, and so on - though if you do have any such problems, you may benefit from also looking into other herbs that are not mentioned in this book. The author has added a small section on additional herbs that are helpful as nerve tonics - like chamomile, passionflower, skullcap, lemon balm and few others; and a section on herbal nootropics like bacopa, gotu kola, bhringaraj (which is otherwise popular for boosting hair growth), and few others.Included are some popular herbal formulations from Traditional Chinese Medicine (bu zong yi qi tang, sheng mai san, etc.), and from Ayurveda (chyavanprash, and triphala), as well as some recipes for incorporating adapogenic herbs into food or making teas with combination of different herbs. On a side note, there is a minimal mention on any herbs which have been traditionally used by western herbalists that will help you to boost your immune system, many of which you may find in your local grocery store, and add to food like turmeric, oregano, thyme and other spices, or make tea out of cinnamon, ginger and cloves - as will garlic and lemon, but they are beyond the scope of this book. Perhaps the greatest benefit of this book is that it covers herbs that many people in the west may be less familiar with.

From the Author

Olga was having trouble lying still on the cart. The nurse was trying to take her vital signs, but Olga was so panicked that she couldn't stand having anyone touch her, especially someone she didn't know. She did let her sister hold her hand and rub her arm, but that was all she could tolerate, and it didn't help much. Her sister had taken her to the emergency room at the Veterans Administration hospital after she had called, and scolded her for not calling sooner. Olga had panic attacks often, sometimes daily, but this was one of the worst. She feared she was having a heart attack or dying, or both. The doctor came quickly, at the insistence of the nurse. He noted that Olga had been seen earlier that day in the mental health clinic but was not given any medications. He gave her intravenous medication to calm her down, which made her sleepy. He sent her home with a bottle of tablets, which she never took.I was the psychiatrist she had seen earlier that day, and I was forbidden to help her. And it is partly because of Olga that you have this book.Sadly, this is a true story, although the veteran's name is not Olga and I have changed some of the details. I was working in the clinic Olga visited, which treated veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. I had been teaching other veterans the Ancient Secret that I discuss in this book. Many of the veterans had very good results and were encouraging their friends and colleagues to use it also. They invited me to their therapy groups and classes to teach the technique to others. But the supervisor ordered me to stop and banned the technique from being used in the clinic.Olga had tried taking medication in the past, but she found it too sedating and refused to try it again. She was working, though only with great effort on her part, and was afraid she would lose her job if she was too drowsy. She had been offered psychotherapy but had difficulty getting off work to make it to her appointments. However, her symptoms were so severe that she could not benefit from any of the few therapy techniques the VA promotes. There was little I could do. I could have shown her the Ancient Secret despite the fact that I was forbidden to do so. In the end, I decided to obey the command and not teach it to her. But I will not be silent. I am writing this book for Olga and the other Olgas out there. I don't want this technique to be a secret any more.Â

About the Author

I am a psychiatrist, former Chief of Psychiatry at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. I am also a bioethicist, with a Masters' degree from Georgetown University's Kennedy Institute of Ethics.I love seeing people be empowered. That is why I chose psychiatry as a specialty, and why I am so passionate about EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique.I have seen medications work, and I have often seen them do miracles. I have prescribed a mountain of them in my forty-some years in medicine. I have also seen them not work, cause side effects, and these days, I see them cost a fortune. So I am pleased to tell you about EFT and show you how to do it yourself. There are many ways to reduce your stress, and this is one. It is easy and fast to learn, and you can do it any time, anywhere.I have been teaching EFT for ten years, most recently with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. Many have had improvement in their symptoms. I tell some of those stories in my book, Relieve Stress With this Ancient Secret: a Psychiatrist Shows You How. However, this is not yet a mainstream technique, for several reasons. But not because it doesn't work - it does work. I had good success teaching it to veterans, but at one hospital I was ordered to stop using it by a supervisor who preferred another therapy technique. There are many books and videos out there that teach EFT. But it isn't mainstream yet, because of people like that clinic supervisor. I'm not going to stop talking about it until it is mainstream. So tell your friends and family!

It's a good nutrition book but lost my attention. It needs to have a better break down that someone can understand than piecing it together over the whole book.

Got this for my kid going to hygienist school and it is exactly what the doctor ordered! There is some highlighting on the pages, but that is expected on used material; however, you save a bundle going used instead of new.

Good condition.

It is what it is. I learned a lot

I can give it 5 stars if they take the library pocket card in front.

Not a bad book. Was used as a textbook for my college class

The book has some mistakes ( corrected by my professor); Outdated information - My Plate replaced My Pyramid in 2011, but the text still teaches My Pyramid; No self-quiz questions and summaries of each chapter. Too expensive for such quality.

This is a required text for a dental hygiene program nutrition class: It is interesting and well-written: easy to understand the chemistry

I loved the conversational style of the author, diving into complex scientific concepts in the same sentence as an offhand joke. Lougheed's interview with the ladies from Stuff You Missed in History Class made me buy the book immediately, and has sparked a fascination with the history and future of tuberculosis. As a non-scientist history-lover, I was really intrigued by the well-rounded exploration of tuberculosis.

I loved the explanation of how tuberculosis treatment has changed throughout history. The author described the issues of treating tuberculosis very concisely.

The book is overly technical in some parts (which may cause the average reader to lose interest) which is unavoidable when discussing a disease. But still a good book.

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, the research and science are excellent and multilayered. You can easily discern the love the author has for tuberculosis and how to contain it. On the other hand, some of her attempts at humor and lightening the mood seemed out of place to me. A reader who is not familiar with pop culture may find some of her sentences confusing – such as:“Basically, in some settings, the machines are just sitting there like big ugly espresso machines that no one really knows how to use. Even if someone does get the urge to brew some coffee, George Clooney has used the last cassette and not put in a new order”.I would be totally immersed in the science aspect and she would throw something like that in there from time to time. It seemed as if she was attempting to lighten the serious subject up with these humorous asides, but it just didn’t work for me.There are a lot of facts and statistics about TB, which are staggering when you stop to consider how many people have been, and are, suffering from this disease. Certainly TB doesn’t get the airtime of, let’s say, AIDS or cancer – but its presence is still felt daily in places like Africa or India. I hadn’t realized how prevalent it still is, or how stricken these countries are.The writer goes deep into the origin of TB and the different ways scientists are trying to defeat it. It’s a canny bacteria, though, and has the ability to mutate or take advantage of other sicknesses in the body. After reading CATCHING BREATH, I know more about TB than I ever have; from the obvious to the minutiae, the author gives us everything she’s got. I definitely appreciate her effort but the writing style was at times too dry, too broadly humorous or too rambling. Maybe a bit of editing would do the trick? In any case, don’t avoid this book if you are a fan of diseases – just be prepared for a little strangeness. You will be educated, amazed, and humbled by this tenacious germ.

“How do you kill something that’s spent millions of generations finding ways to not be killed? Which, at times, seems to know us better than we know ourselves?”Catching Breath: The Making and Unmaking of Tuberculosis explores the intertwined histories of TB and mankind. Lougheed describes how TB has altered countless facets of our lives; from our cultures down to genetics. This is really what kept me engaged in the book, I am not as interested in learning about infectious diseases, but how factors such as poverty, war, and politics, lead to health disparities. Most importantly, Lougheed drives home the point that TB is not a disease of the past. This is not the memoir of a bacteria. In 2016, 1.7 million deaths were attributed to TB infection.“Today, persons affected or displaced by war, political instability, and natural disasters remain at high risk of TB thanks to poor living conditions and a lack of access to consistent healthcare.”This is a well-researched read on TB. Not only does the author have a background in TB research but she has also interviewed scientists currently at the forefront of TB clinical research. I liked that the author has really dug through the most recent peer reviewed scientific literature on TB epidemiology and treatment and included summaries of it in this book. While those in economically developed countries may have better access to healthcare, how we actually effectively treat TB is still a major question. While more heavy in science material than the average pop science book, Lougheed’s writing style is witty and wry, which keeps the book from reading like a textbook.“It’s a new world out there, with HIV infection, drug resistance, co-morbidities such as diabetes, immunosuppressive treatments for other conditions, malnutrition, and no end in sight for those with social inequalities that have plagued us…well, forever. Like a weed, TB continues to slip through the cracks.”Overall, I gave this 4/5 stars. For anyone interested in non-fiction, medicine, or history, this is a good book to pick up.*I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

I've read several good books on tuberculosis including The Remedy, Experiment 11, and Discovering Tuberculosis. Catching Breath is at least as good as, if not better than, the others. The scope of this book is broader than that of the others, and includes history, diagnosis, treatment and public health. I particularly liked Kathryn Lougheed’s good sense of humor especially considering the grim nature of the subject material. She uses plain wording and analogies, and keeps jargon to a minimum. She also is very clear about what is speculation vs what is established. I strongly recommend this book as a starting point for learning more about tuberculosis or as a great recap to put all the pieces together.Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley for review purposes.

The book does a good job of describing how TB affects humanity today. It's clear that we need more well-experienced TB researchers; it's not clear that we need more popular science writers. This is a topic that the author carefully avoids, which is a shame.
