The Green Guide Sicily was added to this series in 1998 and gives you all the information you need for a trip to Sicily.Sicily is not just the birthplace of the Mafia that Hollywood has led you to believe. It's a sleepy place untouched by tourist throngs with a wealth of beautiful Greek ruins. I visited in July 2001 and used this book as my main travel book. As in all the Michelin guides the cities and tourist attractions are listed are organized alphabetically without any geographic considerations so you need to refer to a map to find an unfamiliar place. There are limited maps printed at the beginning of the book. Hours of opening with telephone numbers are given at the back of the book for the major attractions. This is critically important; you don't want to drive across the island to arrive at place that's closed for the 3 to 4 hour midday siesta. Tourist amenities are limited in Sicily, I stayed at one of the best hotels in Palermo (according to the Italy Red Guide) and it was awful. In some remote places finding a place to buy cool drinks or snacks is a challenge that Americans used to having convenience stores everywhere will notice. The upside of this is that there are so few tourists that you get a unique perspective on the places you see. I spent 90 minutes at the superb Greek temple at Segesta during which I was the only person there for most of the time. There weren't many people at the Selunente or Agrigento Greek temples either. The guide refrains from gossipy editorializing, sticking to one or two pages of facts and picture or two of important sites. There is a useful system of prioritizing sites; Three stars is a must see, one star for sites worth visiting if you're in the area or have extra time on your hands. I found that I usually agreed.

The book was good except the author's pages of complaining. I don't blame him for complaining, but it went on and on. after that it was very interesting. I have read other books of his which were the reason I chose to read this one. However, the on & on complaining took some of the enjoyment out of the book.

As expected this book is full of surprising news about the past. There is a lot of probable cause and reasoned inference. However, after finishing the book, I felt like there was a lot left to read about but the things to be read have not yet happened or cannot be made available. The book opens with a reference to some strange writings from the past but we never quite get around to this material except to say that it remains a mystery. The connections to the Mormons with respect to metal tablets in Equador is reasonable except that we do not close on this from either Equador or New York where the Mormons got their start.All in all the reading is exciting but incomplete, leaving one to speculate as to the outcome if more discoveries were made. Those with a preconceived notion about the future will no doubt be happy as will those without a clue, which group will remain in that condition.

I actually enjoyed his very first book and so decided to give this one a try because of the positive reviews. I found this book to be a poorly written, rambling mess of incoherent ideas.

An interesting addition the the Savis Beatie series. This explores the "road to Gettysburg." The books traces several routes (not all north): (1) the Confederate movement from Fredericksburg to Gettysburg and other points in between and north); (2) the Union army's movement to Gettysburg (including the change of commanding general from Hooker to Meade); (3) JEB Stuart;s ride around the Union army--to little effect; (3) the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg and the Union forces' pursuit.This is done nicely. The volume is not lengthy enough to provide full detail, but it does a good service with its coverage. With other books in this series, it also provides those who wish to visit sites mentioned in the book directions on how to visit such sites (including warnings about heavy traffic along certain roads)..There are some errors. At one point, for example, General John Bell Hood is listed as a leader who was killed at Gettysburg.Nonetheless, a nice addition to this series. . . .

"The Last Road North: A Guide to the Gettysburg Campaign, 1863" offers four separate driving tours which follow the movements of the Union and Confederate armies before and after the Battle of Gettysburg of July 1 -- July 3, 1863. While the Gettysburg battlefield has been visited by millions of people over the years, a much smaller number are familiar with the events leading to and following the battle itself during June to mid-July, 1863."The Last Road North" includes a good, succinct chapter on the battle, but the focus is on the before and after. The four driving tours it presents are each lengthy and separate and cover movements through Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The first two tours begin in Virginia following the Chancellorsville Campaign. The first tour guiders the reader on "The Confederate Advance" which took Lee's army from Virginia through the Shenandoah Valley to as far north as the vicinity of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The second tour, "The Union Response" is a guide to the Army of the Potomac's efforts to ascertain the goal of Lee's movements and to follow and counter them. Most of the pursuit was at a considerable distance from Lee's army, making this tour independent of the first with little overlap. The third tour "Jeb Stuart's Ride" follows the Confederate cavalry commander's fabled long ride around the Union army through Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The last of the four tours covers the "Retreat from Gettysburg" including the roads Lee's Army took back to Virginia following the battle and the Union pursuit.Each tour includes many tour stops and good brief discussions of their significance. Some of the sites discussed will be familiar to students of the battle, but virtually everyone who reads this book will learn something new. There are detailed driving directions, including GPS coordinates for those who follow one or the other of the tours in their cars. The book has photographs of much of the monumentation and commemoration of the Gettysburg campaign in places far from the battlefield. There are many photos of historic places and individuals. The writing is accessible, and the book has a good basic bibliography for those wishing to learn more.I found this book moving as well as informative in reminding me of why I study the battle and in teaching me aspects of the campaign I didn't know. The book will benefit those with an interest in Gettysburg even if they do not get on the road and drive. A strong feature of the book is the clear and detailed maps prepared by cartographer Hal Jesperson. The Emerging Civil War Series has been one of the more recent highlights of informative Civil War writing. The books not only feature important information on lesser known battles, but give driving instructions for people visiting the sites. One of the more intriguing projects the team has been handling recently is the Battle of Gettysburg. With the prospect of releasing one book a year per day in the battle, The Last Road North was released encompassing the whole campaign. This not only deals with the days of the battle, but the actions immediately before and after the infamous clash. Unlike the other works in this series, The Last Road North has no appendices and focuses just on the author’s words. Robert Orrison has spent most of his life working within the realm of Gettysburg and its campaign sites as he holds a position on the board of the Civil War Trails. He has been working in the history field for over twenty years and holds a Bachelors of Arts in Historic Preservation from Longwood College and a Masters in Public History from George Mason University. Dan Welch received his Bachelors of Arts in Instrumental Music Education from Youngstown State University and his Masters of Arts in Military History from American Military University. He is a seasonal Park Ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park. As I began to read The Last Road North, one thing stuck out to me regarding the title. The first chapter, which handles the Confederate advance into Pennsylvania, is one of the highlights of the work mainly for its tour stops and instructions. Many who have read books concerning the Battle of Gettysburg and the campaign surrounding it are familiar with many of the stops here, but very few enthusiasts have visited these sites. The instructions for these sites was one of the highlights of the book for me. Throughout the work, we have a narrative of the battle fueled by many well drawn maps and photographs all of which are written and presented excellently by the authors. The concluding chapter about the retreat and aftermath of battle was another fine example of what was accomplished in the first chapter. By giving the reader a well written documentation of how to travel these destinations, along with a narrative of what happened which elegantly presented as in the previous Emerging Civil War books. Overall, the greatest value this book can give to those interested in the Gettysburg Campaign is the opening and closing chapter about the advance and retreat from battle. I highly recommend this book to those interested in the Gettysburg Campaign, especially for those who are just getting into the hobby and even those in middle and high school. The travel directions along with the invaluable information in this book will give you a better idea of what happened on those days. If you are a reader who wants to learn more about these sites and even visit them, I recommend this book as well. Most of these battlefields around the campaign are not visited or studied as much as they should and this work fixes that problem. Highly recommended.Matthew Bartlett

+++I was fooled by the first guy's 5 star review and thought this was a good book. I bought it and I am very disappointed at this book. Here are the reasons1) This book is all about SQL server 2012, no 2008 or 2005 questions, but it doesn't tell you so from description.2) All the 2012 questions only scratch the surface, have no depth (basically repeat the new features you can find online). I am a DBA and I don't think anybody can get a DBA job by reading this book.3) I was putting high hope on the "56 HR questions" part. They are garbage. There are no even a single examples no sample answers. Only hollow talking and useless "suggestions". It will server you no help at all. You can get this kind of "suggestions" for free by googling how to answer interview question. I guarantee you when you read it, the first word you will say is WTF.4) Comparing with SQL Server interview book by Pinal Dave, this book is almost garbage, total waste of money.+++5) I notice the same person wrote the five star review for all interview books published by the same company, which is very questionable. Just search all the interview books from this same publisher, he almost wrote 5 star reviews for every single one of them. Smell the fish?6) The guy who wrote 5 stars for all the books for this publisher didn't even buy the book BUT he was giving 5 stars.7) Make sure you check the reviews from the people who actually bought the interview books which were all endorsed 5 stars by this person. From my own personal experience, I don't think they are making high quality books, together with other people's truthful reviews.+++

I bought set of 5 books as they were running some deals. Got Java j2ee, jsp servlet, core java, sql server and c & c++ interview questions from vibrant publishers at around $70. I must say every penny spent is worth it. few good things about these books is they have a large pool of questions, no repeats in technical questions, variety (basic, intermediate as well as high level questions) in questions.

Chilling. Gripping. This is true horror. 'Piercing the Darkness' exposes and illuminates the source of absolute evil. I pulled an all-nighter on this one.When school teachers in a small town begin teaching a new curriculum to their innocent, moldable students, the Fourth Grade class begins to manifest "spirit guides" -- and all Hell breaks loose. Literally.This is 'Good Vs. Evil' at its most fundamental. I'm not going to summarize this story because I'd reveal too many surprise plot twists that unfurl themselves like demon's wings as the novel progresses. Read it for yourself. If your soul isn't deeply perturbed by this book, then maybe you don't have one. Or maybe Someone Else is in control of it.Go on. I dare you to read it.

I have read and re-read "This Present Darkness" and "Piercing the Darkness" many times over since approximately 1990. The Pastor at the Church we were attending at the time, loaned them to me initially. I purchased a paperback copy at the time and read them again. Told my dad about them and then gave him a set since I knew he would read them more than once! When I saw them on Amazon' Kindle website, I purchased an electronic copy! These are AWESOME books and former Pastor, Frank Peretti, has written other Christian novels as well. I have read some but intend to read all.

Bought this for my niece. I had read it shortly after college and thought she might enjoy it after having some discussions about the spiritual realm. Peretti wrote an enjoyable story that shows how all these forces play out in the lives of people through a mystery/thriller. Good thought-provoking book to have in your collection with the classic C.S. Lewis book The Scewtape Letters.

This Present Darkness was a very enjoyable book to read. Through the story, the author emphasized the importance and power of prayer which greatly effects the lives of people all around. The story portrays the unseen, heavenly actions of God and his angels, as well as the deceitful and conniving works of the Devil, who only works to destroy the saints of God. I personally would recommend this story to all ages of readers because it emphasizes the love of God towards his people, the power of God above Satan, and the need and importance of a praying Church of Christ. This Present Darkness reveals the truth that without prayer to God, anyone, Christian or non-Christian, can fall under the lies and deceptions of the Devil.

Powerful, compelling and captivating -- yet replete with spiritual observations and lessons. Yes, you can read a great book and learn spiritual truth as you read and I cannot recommend this book too highly. From teens to senior adults, this book will reinforce your faith while you struggle to put it down. The first time I read it was a Sunday afternoon, the day before my daughters left on church-related missions trips to Central and South America -- it inspired me to pray fervently for my daughters every day they were gone. Yes, they both returned home safely.

One of the best books I have read on Spiritual Warfare! Even though it is fictional, Peretti opens our eyes to the spiritual battle going on around us as Christians. The way he imagines the battle unfolding is very Biblical and thus makes reading passages like Ephesians 6 come alive. Though the book falls into the science fiction category I wouldn't say it is to strange or weird. I have read a lot of other Christian fiction books that are farther out there than this one. I would recommend this to every Christian! A Must Read

Wish I had read the Foreward before ordering this book. While I wanted a book from inspirational fiction, this author clearly delineates the type of Christianity he believes in: narrow, prescribed, militant. Anything that does not fit into his views are Satan's business. Sorry. I was looking for an author who was spiritual, not pedantic. Did not realize this in time to return the book. It will now go in the trash!

I have read this over and over again and will likely still read it again. Beyond entertaining, it awakens one to the reality of evil principalities over individuals, neighborhoods, organizations, cities and regions. It also shows the supremacy of the believer over evil, regardless of the wickedness of the unseen evil personalities or their position in the hierarchy of evil. It shows the weakness of evil, when we stand on God's word. It shows also that the devil and his cohorts are not nearly as powerful as they portray themselves to be. Jesus said, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given unto me." So the devil has none.I also love love love how the angels allow the demons to seem to be winning and then swing a surprise rout. Very like God to catch the crafty (the deceiver) in his own craftiness. The princes of this world go ahead and crucify Christ not knowing it's a trap. This book lets you see that God will have the final say, when we refuse to fear, we pray, we stand on His Word. God will contains evil no matter how pervasive it is, when believers step up to the plate. After all, it's His universe, He created the playing field.Satan fears a true believer who knows his or her rights in Christ. One true believer can change the spiritual climate of a city or a region. But the power increases exponentially when believers unite and we set aside all our theological or doctrinal differences and we just unite around Christ and Him crucified. That is when we become the body of Christ and the days of evil in our communities and cities and societies and economies are over.
