About the Author

After earning a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Edinburgh University, Mark Denny pursued research at Oxford University from 1981 to 1984, then moved into a career in industry. For nearly twenty years he developed radar and sonar systems for several multinational aerospace corporations. He is the author of Ingenium: Five Machines That Changed the World, also published by Johns Hopkins. Denny is now retired and lives on Vancouver Island.

This is a great introduction to the subject of remote sensing. It is such a big topic, but this book does an excellent job of giving a complete overview with a good amount of scientific detail. I feel like I am in a good place to dive into the areas of the subject relevant to my interests and I was just flailing around the topic before this book.

I would agree with the other good reviews. This book is just at the right level for me. Not simplistic. But not a text book for radar engineers either. An enjoyable read. Provides good intuition behind the science of radar and sonar. And provides good stories to illustrate the pertinence of the theory.

Excellent overview and historical insight

This was a very entertaining and enlightening book to read. This goes well beyond the "a wave goes out, reflects and comes back" explanation of radar and sonar. In fact, looking at the Wikipedia entry for Radar, you get an outline of the radar subjects in this book. But this book will be more fun and will explain far better what those words mean. You will learn some of the language of signal processing and have it well illustrated in text and simple figures. He does sonar as well, and the wonderful MB800 signal processor seems to be a favorite. That last part may sound dull, but trust me, it is not!Denny does some history, most notably of the British Chain Home radar that helped win the Battle of Britain. He also has a nice section on electronic warfare, with a history of the back and forth between the British and the Germans in World War II.If you've wondered about the side-scan sonar images in Bob Ballard's stories of hunting for ships, there is a readable description of how that works.I'll say that it will help you if you read the technical notes at the end of the book. You won't be faced with pages and pages of algebra or a slew of acronyms. Just very good writing

Books on technical subjects can be broadly divided into three main categories: (i) very basic in its descriptions with many historical and biographical snippets but with no mathematics or formulas, (ii) significantly more advanced in technical content with formulas - a possible supplement to a textbook on the subject, and (iii) very advanced such as a textbook or a research paper. I would place this book in the second category. The author's expertise in this field is very obvious through the clarity with which the principles behind radar and sonar are explained. Technical notes at the back of the book, 23 of them, provide more in-depth information for the interested reader on certain technical details. Remote sensing by bats, dolphins and whales is also discussed. The writing style is clear, friendly, authoritative, very witty - a most pleasant feature in a technical book, and quite accessible, although some passages need serious concentration. I learned quite a bit from reading this book but I would benefit even more from re-reading certain sections since this subject, at this level of technical detail, is so new to me. This book would likely of most interest to science buffs.

Technical books for the general reader must balance effectively accuracy, depth, and complexity on the one hand and readability at several levels on the other. This book succeeds at doing that about as well as any I have ever read, and I read a lot of books that try. The reader can use the numerous appendices to go into as much technical detail (within limits, this is an intro) as s(he) wants while the general discussion illuminates the mechanics and brief history of radar and sonar as well as the always-fascinating means by which bats, dolphins and whales do it better than we do. The author knows his material cold, but in addition, he makes it extremely accessible and pleasant to read. For those who want more, he provides plenty of pointers to plenty more. He's the kind of guy, you decide at the end, you would love to run into at the coffee shop for more conversation.

I loved this powerful little book. It sets the table for reading Michael Heiser with a necessary perspective of how God wants us to seek him well. I wished I would have read this first before reading The Unseen Realm and Reversing Hermon. Dr. Heiser brings such depth of wisdom and wonder to the richness and complexity of what is unseen. Worth reading several times.

Dr. Heiser presents the overall narrative of the Bible clearly in a few short chapters. He then digs in on the gospel, what it is and isn't. He does a great job using Scripture to back up his position. Lastly, he tackles discipleship with a clarity I have not found elsewhere. I very much appreciated this book for both its concise and plain spoken presentation of its subjects. This is a terrific book both for non-believers interested in understanding what the Bible and Jesus are all about, new believers wanting to know what is expected of them, and seasoned believers looking for a good refresher or tool to use in introducing Jesus and the Bible to others.

Dr. Heiser has done it again! ---For those who have read the Unseen Realm, Angels, Reversing Hermon etc. this book fills a gap that has needed to be filled. What does God Want is a book that boils the big picture of the Deuteronomy 32 & Psalm 82 view of the Bible into a very usable outline that can be conveyed to a new or even a non believer in a simple and quickly understandable way. For those who haven't read Unseen Realm, this is a great way to do a flyover without digging too deep. As a fan of Heiser, I have been frustrated with my ability to put his research conclusions into simple, quickly communicated terms for the uninitiated. This book does this. Even the chapters are titled in a way that are easily remembered and will walk you through God's plan from beginning to end. Spoiler Alert...HIS plan and passion is for you!

Many people study and do so in great depth only to feel inundated with too much information and overwhelmed by neverending questions with not enough life to gain all the answers. What Does God Want? will help to snap you back to what's important, to what's essential and offer you a primer of what to keep one's spiritual eye on. God wants us. He always has. We must carry on His will and rescue our fellow imagers, loving and serving like Jesus and become more useful to His Kingdom.

To any who have read “Supernatural“ This is an excellent resource to a foundational understanding of our Christian beliefs. This is NOT an in depth treatise on the subject as “Unseen Realm” vs. “Supernatural” in their subject.Personally he writes in such a way as to challenge one’s thinking. It can be a bit uncomfortable, at times, but will challenge believers to go deeper in our relationship with God.Well done Dr. H

If only I had a resource like this when I was a young believer and started questioning so many of the things I’d heard in church as a kid. The simplicity of the timeline detailed in “Part 1-The Story” with very clear scriptural references honestly drew the line from Adam to Jesus in a way I personally have never bothered to really study. And now, I absolutely will be more intentional in my study of every part. It just makes so much more sense now. Bravo, Heiser. I plan to get copies for friends soon- we ALL can learn something from this quick read.

I wish there was such a book as this back in the 90's. If everyone who ever contemplated becoming a Christian read this book, they would arrive at their decision sooner (time is of the essence). This book explains what God truly wants of us without all the mumbo, jumbo religiosity - I never liked religion, but I love God. Share this with anyone who is curious about the Christian faith and seeking God. A fast read, so I guarantee you won't fall asleep.

Didn't realize it was YA when I started reading...I loved Night Film and STICP so naturally I was already on board....in fact, I didn't actually realize it was YA until after I had finished and started reading other folks reviews and I'm still not convinced it is totally YA. It's a great premise and unfolds with a pace that allows that we are a society that has seen Groundhog Day and doesn't labor on the minutiae of the purgatoria of living the same day over and over...so the pace is quite brisk. Some excellent explorations here of guilt and the darker natures of humans: what would YOU do if you had an endless supply of reset buttons at the end of your day? Smart urban (?) fantasy with great characters. Highly recommend...

Spoiler-y Song Selection: Trace the Lines by A Lot Like BirdsAfter letting it set in for a couple of days, I'm landing at a solid 4 stars and sticking with it. I don't know how to really compare this book to anything else I've ever read. I was so immersed in this story and this world that I couldn't pull myself away. I found myself questioning if this was a thing that really happened - what if every time some tragic accident/act of violence happened where only one out of many survived, the survivor was determined by an endless cycle of negotiating and reliving one day until everyone decided whose life was most worth living? I definitely recommend this book. It is a true one-of-a-kind and something that will stick with me for a while. Even if it's a kind of different that you don't end up enjoying, it's worth a shot because it's not a huge time commitment.SPOILERS AHEADI only didn't give it 5 stars because I'm one of those people that hopes that there might be an unhappy or tragic ending in like 9/10 books that I read. I expected Bee to end up committing suicide after she was spared. I was kind of disappointed that she was the one chosen to survive. Most people would be infuriated, but I felt like it could have just ended with them all fading away in the icy water because our main character and narrator hadn't survived. I assumed when Martha disappeared, it was because she was the one who had been saved.

Wow. Officially one of my favorite books this year. Completely unexpected, supremely unpredictable and absolutely crazy! I knew this was some sort of YA mystery-thriller, but I never thought it would take such an astonishing turn. Marisha Pessl takes you on one thrilling ride that knows no bounds. So many crazy twists and turns, every time you think you've figured it out...BAM! Sorry buddy, try again.This story follows protagonist, Beatrice Hartley, who is back in her Rhode Island hometown, attending Emerson college, living with her parents, helping them at their café and nursing her grief after the sudden death of her boyfriend and first love, a year ago at Darrow-Harker School.Beatrice had tried to forget that fateful day, when her boyfriend, Jim, mysteriously died. Everyone ruled it a suicide, but Bea knew that there was no way Jim would opt out and she was also certain that their friends knew more than they let on about that night. Since his death, Bea had completely detached herself from her friends, an elite group that had taken her in even though she came from more humble backgrounds and was not as privileged.That summer, Beatrice receives a very random text from her best friend Whitley, who invites her over to her house (mansion) to hang out just like old times. Beatrice is very tempted to go, because Jim's death is still nagging at her and she needs to know what happened to him in order to put that chapter in her life to rest. She decides to go to and see her friends again, even though her parents think it's a very bad idea.Upon her arrival, the group - consisting of Kipling, Martha, Cannon and Whitley - is slightly surprised she showed up, but quickly accept her with arms wide open that felt a bit...forced. You could sense there is tension and that the dynamic has shifted in the group in the year that's passed, but everyone was trying to act normal. They go out to a concert, and spend the night drinking and dancing without a care in the world. On the drive back home, it is raining heavily, and Whitley, who was driving, loses control of the car and almost collide with a tow truck. After the scare, they get back home drenched in rain and feeling a bit subdued. As they are drying off, they get a knock on the door and an old man speaking in old English introduces himself and tells them..."You're all nearly dead. Wedged between life and death. Time for you has become snagged on a splinter, forming a closed-circuited potentiality called a Neverworld Wake."The rules of this world are explained to them. He informs them that the driver of the tow truck is dead, and that 4 of them will also have to die, and only one can survive. They have to vote who that person will be, and it has to be a unanimous vote. Until they decide, they will be living the same day over and over and over again, in a constant time loop straight out of Groundhog Day. There's only one way to break that loop, during the last 3 minutes of their day, they will be given the chance to make their vote. Until they can reach a consensus, the loop will repeat itself, with the day playing itself out endlessly from the moment they hit the truck. Every day, they will wake up at the exact moment they hit the truck.In that time, they are able to leave, go home, see their families, live their lives normally, until they go to bed, and then they wake up repeating the same cycle, with their loved ones completely oblivious to their plight and no memory of the day before. Every one in the group deals with this news in their own way, some becoming violent, others in denial, Martha trying to study the science behind the Wake phenomena, but Bea...Bea wanted to solve Jim's mysterious death.These loops were insane. I mean, absolutely insane. Think the violence of "A Clockwork Orange" kind of insanity. The group goes into a rampage, stealing, lying, thieving, seducing and turn into absolute monsters. When they all end up collapsing...and we are never sure how much time has passed or how many Wakes they've lived, Bea confronts them and tells them of her need to find out what happened to Jim. Enter Martha, who has figured out how they can move through time and space during the loop. They use that new knowledge to try and find out what really happened that night, and the deceptions and lies begin to reveal themselves, breaking the group apart, then bringing them back together, defeated and desperate.This is where Pessl's true skill shows as she is able to really navigate the readers through all the confusing timelines, clues and complex bits and pieces in a way that was always easy to follow and understand. As we race towards the end, and the true events of that fateful night is revealed to us, we think we have it all figured out and reach acceptance, only for Pessl to pull the rug from under us with another explosive twist.Everything we thought we know, the stereotypes that we set ourselves and other people go out the window. That is one of the many things Pessl tries to convey with this story. I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the book that really sums up that thought:"We swear we see each other, but all we are ever able to make out is a tiny porthole view of an ocean. We think we remember the past as it was, but our memories are as fantastic and flimsy as dreams. It's so easy to hate the pretty one, worship the genius, love the rock star, trust the good girl. That's never their only story. We are all anthologies. We are each thousands of pages long, filled with fairy tales and poetry, mysteries and tragedy, forgotten stories in the back no one will ever read."

This is an incredible story! Beautifully written, interesting characters about whom I cared, twisting plot continually surprising me, much wisdom throughout, still I'm not an academic so I fear I don't have the proper terminology/language to adequately describe its appeal. Obviously shorter and less complex than her first two novels, which I love too and have gifted numerous times as presents, but still compelling enough for readers like me who are (much) older than a "young adult." There are so many thought-provoking ideas jammed into this book that you might need two sessions with your book club! So, if you buy this book for your son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, nephew, or niece, definitely borrow it off their bookshelf and read it yourself, better yet buy it for your self and let them find it on your bookshelf. And if you end up agreeing with me on how enjoyable a read is, pick up Carlos Ruiz Zafon's first four books which are also "marketed" for young adults but as intriguing as his Cemetery of Forgotten Books tetralogy.

This was a huge waste. The author had a great premise to work with and totally wasted the opportunity. She kept tossing out totally nonsensical stuff. Real people wouldn't act like that. At times it sounded like her characters were on drugs and had forgotten how to think. I hung in there, hoping against hope that there might be a story in there, somewhere. There wasn't. Save your time and money. Get a good book and enjoy.

I didn’t even know this was out there until I was browsing on Amazon, and what a pleasure to find. I adored NIGHT FILM and while this is YA it’s sure to delight anybof Pessl’s fans - dark, creepy, a delightful mystery/thriller full of complexity (actually she could have gone further and I wish she had).I didn’t want to leave this strange world.

Holy cow- what a thrill!! I listened to this book (I strongly suggest you listen because the narrator, Ray Porter, is a true genius and made the story truly come alive) when it first came out, while I was on vacation in Europe. Let's just say there were a couple of days when I couldn't wait to get back to the hotel so I could plug in and listen.I'm not going to go into details of the plot because other reviews have done so. I will say many aspects are plausible and possible which makes the story more realistic. And even if the story feels a bit "sci-fi", there is too much credibility in the story to simply lump the book into that category.The characters are well crafted and I had an immediate connection with all of them (well, the good ones, anyway). Even though there are several main characters, I had no trouble keeping track of all of them thanks to Brian Andrews' wonderful writing.The gripping twists and turns in the story kept me listening far past when I should have gone to sleep. And the ending- WOW WOW WOW!!!. When I finished listening, I looked out the hotel window and said (actually out loud!), with my mouth hanging open: "Holy S*%t- What a ride!!".Do yourself a big favor and READ/LISTEN TO THIS BOOK!!!!! You will not be disappointed.

A well-written novel blurs the lines between fact and fiction. It entertains, while at the same time transports a reader from their present reality to another in subtle ways. Such a novel also teaches readers something new. I must admit, I’m not much of a “science” guy. Sci-fi books aren’t the type I gravitate toward, typically. However, Reset is a down and out non-stop thriller with sci-fi elements.Brian does a masterful job taking high concept scientific theory and breaking them down in a way that is both understandable and quite fascinating. His characters are compelling and their struggles universal. The novel is well paced and each chapter leaves you wanting to know how the characters will resolve the next conflict which happens to be only a page or two away.And the ending? WOW. I’ll admit I didn’t see THAT coming. Without giving it away I’ll say you might need to go back and re-read the last two chapters. Things aren’t always as they seem and humanity’s greatest enemy walks amongst us in plain sight.Computer technology has proved a Reset is in order from time to time, pick up a copy of Brian’s book and see what a real Reset truly entails.

Admittedly, I’m not a Sci-Fi buff, but being a huge fan of the Tier One series, I had to try this out. Great mystery weaving in some Sci-Fi elements to illustrate the war we are actually waging on our planet. The message isn’t preaching, but rather woven in to the action, audacity, and realism one would expect when reading Brian Andrew’s work. Some mind blowing parts that make the novel as fun to read as it is to reflect on afterwards. (I humbly suggest pairing that reflection with a Mosaic/Citra hopped IPA.) Nice work!

At one time I was an avid SF reader, but drifted away from it many years ago. But there have been an occasional one that here and there that got to me. Reset is one. This one off the few books that got me talking out loud to the story as I was reading. Not a story of space ships zooming around (even if you wonder where the "orb" came from) but one of today's world with a SF twist. Highly recommended.

I think authors should need to start stating their liberal agenda upfront so as a reader I can avoid wasting my time. The story was actually not bad but the cacophony of cliches and stupid choices by the main cast, not to mention the not subtle snippets of liberal logic detract from what could have been a passable waste of time. But alas, that was not the case. Stupid people make stupid choices, oh yeah and civilization is going to end. Granted we have been hearing dire predictions for decades now but this time it is real! Whatever.

Reset was a decent sci-fi thriller about an orb found in a cave in Afghanistan that sort of hacks into a person's thoughts and takes over if you get close enough to it.I liked the story, but it was Ray Porter's narration that really made this book!! As always, he did a superb performance!The ending was one of those big twists that I didn't see coming and really stayed with me. I could have absolutely done without the preachy Afterword though. Just tell the story and hope you get the point across from the story. The message was there for me, but the soapbox kind of turned me off.

Absolutely fantastic novel with a unique and incredible plot, great characters, and a message that we ALL need to hear and heed. Well worthy of five stars.

Excellent book, really makes you think and wake up. If the people of this planet do not take care of our planet we will cease to exist and this is truly where we are headed.

Dr. Saul has a wealth of information in here and I keep it as a valuable reference book. One can't go wrong with his natural healing recommendations.

This book has changed my life but more importantly, it has changed the lives of some of the people I love the most as well. The secret ingredient is Vitamin C and plenty of it. I can only say get this book and read it and practice what it preaches. I was recently diagnosed with an infection in my lower intestine, and prescribed two heavy duty antibiotics, which made me severely ill. I was told by the clinic I went to that if I didn't stay the course and continue taking the prescribed antibiotics that I would die. I was so sick from only two doses of the antibiotics (with twenty eight more doses to go) that I made the decision to stop. I had some old ascorbic acid in my kitchen and I mixed some up with baking soda and water and began taking it. Within three days I was as good as new. While researching Vitamin C on the net I found this book, ordered it, read it, and told others my story. My sister has also started on high doses of Vitamin C and other supplements recommended in this book and no longer takes two prescription pain medications she has been on for years and falls asleep now at night by eating a handful of cashews (another recommendation in the book). I can go on and on. Just do yourself a favor and get this book. You will save yourself tons of money over the years in doctor visits and prescription drug costs plus taking high doses of Vitamin C will improve your health now and could very much lesson your chance of getting any number of debilitating diseases including cancer in the future. One final thought....I am stunned by the number of friends I have that carry around a pill box and take any number of prescription drugs for every kind of ailment on the planet and then warn me about taking too much Vitamin C 'because it's not good for you'. Have you ever read all the 'side effect' warnings on those prescription drug packages? All I can say is that the big pharmaceutical companies have done their job well with profits in the billions of dollars fueled by a compliant, ignorant public and most doctors today prescribing drugs at a record rate. After all there is no money to be made off of natural remedies like Vitamin C and a public who takes ownership of it's health. 'Doctor Yourself' says it all.

This book has very positively changed my health and quality of life. Thank you, Dr. Saul - not sure if you get to read these, but thanks anyway! I am a very health-conscious, whole-foods-only eater and regular exerciser in my early 50s who maintains a healthy weight and very active life. I do not usually get sick with viruses. I have continued a daily maintenance dose of 10-15 grams (10-16 1000 mg tablets) of C a day throughout the day. I am back to being healthy and high energy. Not only did the vitamin C help me to swiftly and immediately overcome that six-week virus, but my skin which was already clear is now flawlessly - almost eerily so - clear. In addition, I no longer am suffering from a dust mite allergy, (sneezing, coughing, and runny nose were common indoor occurrences for me.) When I start coughing, I take a C instead of allergy med, and every single time it WORKS. Still blows my mind. Furthermore, I thought being postmenopausal was the cause for developing some receding gum issues and plaque between teeth. I am OCD about caring for my teeth, so these changes were frustrating, to say the least. I had been experiencing these oral health changes for about a year before C therapy. Since taking C, they have VANISHED. I am postponing my upcoming dental cleaning - moving back to just having two dental cleanings per year instead of one every 10 weeks. Vitamin C is definitely cheaper than that regimen was. As for the style of Dr. Saul's writing, he is a clear, intelligent, and entertaining communicator who documents everything with multiple examples of published medical research. I am now also following his other recommendations, both dietary (near vegetarian and juicing) and daily vitamins.

I ordered this book along with several others of Dr. Saul's. This by far is my favorite and the best! I highly recommend this book for daily protocols from anything from a cold to cancer! Easy to read and written with witt! You do not need to be a rocket scientist to understand it! Just common sense! You will enjoy healing yourself! Already see a difference in my seasonal allergies with increased vitamin c protocol n no OTC or prescription allergy meds. Such a bargain as already saved me money on allergy meds n feel better without drowsy side effects! Easy reference guide as well if not interested in all illnesses. Already recommended to several friends! Normally I do not write reviews so my writing to tell you this will save you and your families health with just pennies for this purchase! Best investment EVER!!!

Oh my... where to even start? It brought me to tears, made my skin tingle in delight, had my mind racing, and made my heart sigh. Resistance tells the stories of a fascinating array of characters; the most prominent being Kyrin Altair and Jace. Kyrin, along with her twin brother Kaden, train in Tarvin Hall to serve the emperor. Jace is of a feared race, an outcast to society. Both of them have this in common: they serve King Elom; which is a dangerous thing to do in the darkening days of Ilyon. Believers of Elom labor to keep their faith a secret... but evil is at work. In the end, who will bow, and who will resist? The setting of Resistance is an unusual, captivating mix of Ancient Rome-like times, fantasy concepts, and a futuristic touch, with the Christian allegory ever present. The collection of different "fantasy" races was intriguing. From the ruthless, supposedly soulless ryriks, to the regal, peace-loving talcrins, I was delighted by this creativity! Can't wait to meet more of the races, such as the cretes and the giants (dorlanders)! This story was deep. Deep, emotionally-stirring, thought-provoking, and hitting very close to home. I often found myself thinking, "What would I do in that situation?" Because I have much in common with Kyrin and Jace. A faith that has faced persecution around the world and across the centuries, for one. And it's a faith worth fighting for! Resistance displayed that... with scenes that pierced my heart. No, I will not bow down to your gods; I serve King Elom, and Him alone! Yes, it was deep. It felt real. The love story, well... it's not exactly a love story... but, I believe it will be, later on! :) Anyway, the relationship was so sweet. It came about with real compassion, selflessness, and care. Truly beautiful to watch unfold. Oh, and did I mention that I love Kaden? Really, he's the epitome of "big brotherly-ness". He definitely ranks as a favorite character, along with Kyrin and Jace. But I liked all the characters... the good ones, I mean. Rayad, Trev, Endathlorsam, Liam, William, Trask, Anne... Ah, I just want to read more of them! Resistance was surprising, with breathtaking twists and turns. It was bittersweet and love-filled, with scenes that made me want to cry and smile all at once. It was interesting, with its amazing settings and happenings. It was heart-rending. It was beautiful. It was worth it. Definitely not your fluffy romance story, but I loved it. I absolutely can't wait to read the next book to the Ilyon Chronicles!! And the next, and the next. I hear there's six books to the series, yay! :) There was some violence, in order to enhance the story. I would caution younger children (12 and under). But otherwise, it's definitely not all gruesome and gore, just a bit of violence to make the situation more real. All in all, a stunning story. Even after the last page, the impact remains.

Sweet Elom, where do I even start. I'm not a big fantasy reader (prefer historical) but am always on the hunt for a great hero book. This author happens to be a fan of my own work so when I saw this book on sale on Facebook for .99 I grabbed it. Well before I tossed it in my to be read pile on my ereader, I wanted to read "just a little." That was five days ago and I finished it just now. It's rare I stumble into a book this great without help from my reader and author friends recommending it first, but I absolutely did and am so glad. Now I get to go tell all of them "You must read this."The author grabbed me by the throat in the opening scenes by playing the wounded hero card which is my absolute reader drug of choice. As talented a writer as I am no review I write will do this book justice. I'm going to try anyway while staying spoiler free to preserve the reader experience of a very rich, multi-layered plot. There are so many sub plots but they never tangle and always tie back to the central conflict - good and evil in the forms of followers of Elom the true God and the 2 pagan gods. I loved that as I moved through the characters and got to know them in their separate stories at the beginning, the world building and characterization were so well woven I never felt lost or needed to refer to the maps or race listings (which honestly freak me out because I'm like... if I need cliff notes to the story world I'm already in trouble, LOL but I found I never needed to refer to them. The way the author drew me into the story world and pace at which story and world elements were introduced were so natural and well done I was never lost. Only intrigued.) It takes an incredible amount of skill and author chops to carry as many point of view characters as this novel has in a way that enriches rather than confuses the full depth of the storytelling. Second, it takes even more skill to write a book that is as equally plot driven as it is character driven, and this book does that in spades. It is quite simply fantastic.It's long, and at times in the middle pacing did drag a bit but I had to know what was going to happen to Jace and Kyrin and all the other characters I'd come to love so that wasn't overly burdensome to get through the few slow places. Along the way I chuckled now and then, felt my reader heart get ripped apart in my chest, a few misty eyed moments, and in the final pages I wanted to stand up and shout "right here, right now, we are the resistance" with a sword at my side too.Just as a great story, this novel is already that. But in light of the rampant persecution in our own real world, today, beneath the story resonating with my own soul was that one day the fortitude to stand strong for the faith in the face of death may one day become my reality. I hope and pray if and when that time comes, I show not only the fortitude of the 21 Egyptian martyrs, but that of these characters, as well. So thankful book 2 is already out, and I've already bought it. However I'm using it as an incentive as a reward for when I get my own next book in my series out, I'm looking forward to it that much.One final note is that at my core I am a romance reader/writer and I was so impressed with how a "romantic thread" played out in this novel. that's all I will say to stay spoiler free but to witness such a relationship of healing and self-discovery that was so strong and pure, without physical attraction or any element of traditional romance was beautiful, believable, and awe inspiring. Well done, Jaye L. Knight. Well done.

Associate Professor David G. Newman is a consultant in aviation medicine and Head of the Aviation Medicine Unit in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. His 13 years as an aviation medicine specialist in the Royal Australian Air Force, in both Australia and on exchange in the UK, include three years in support of tactical fighter operations and two years as Chief Instructor at the RAAF Institute of Aviation Medicine, where he was responsible for the training of all Australian Defence Force aircrew and medical officers. He holds a medical degree from Monash University, a Diploma in Aviation Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians of London, an MBA from Deakin University and a PhD from the University of Newcastle. He is also a pilot, with flying experience in several military fast jets including the F/A-18 Hornet and the Harrier. He has won numerous awards for his research into aerospace biomechanics and high G physiology, including the Aerospace Medical Association’s Arnold D. Tuttle award in 2000, the Buchanon-Barbour Award from the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2000, and the John Paul Stapp Award from the Aerospace Medical Association in 2014.

Ive already read the entire Tokyo Ghoul series and I'm current with Tokyo Ghoul:Re.. I'm just happy to be able to purchase it and support the artist finally. This series is incredibly awesome! Ishida is amazing and there is so much symbolism in all of the panels be it with flowers, numbers and subtle hints and foreshadowing. Definitely a favorite and I can't wait to buy them all. I really recommend reading the manga first over watching the anime.

Ghoul turf wars, the craving of human flesh, and keeping himself hidden from society are but the stepping stones of what it means to become a "monster".Pro's:•A wonderful use of colors (black and shading)•Great moments that give the reader anxiety.•The author is able to make you care for the main protagonist in a short amount of time.Cons:•To some readers it might seem that emotions end abruptly (One moment something horrible is happening and then the next page that horror just ends).•The pacing might not be up to standards by some.Verdict: It being Tokyo Ghoul's first volume, the author (Sui Ishida) does a great job setting up this immersive story which has great potential to become an amazing one.However, this being the case, by no means is this a perfect story. It has flaws that could put off some readers but, that being said, it's still a great start.Rating: High recommendation

I took a chance on this book, I read some reviews and thought what the hey it sounds really cool.So as you read above this book is about ghouls. If you're not into vampires I don't recommend this book for you. It's the same concept except ghouls devour the entire body, not just the blood.Ken's a normal kid who's a bit of an internal, shy guy who just wants to go out on a date. He's a bookworm and focused on college, so it's safe to assume he doesn't get a lot of girl action. A beautiful girl he's been eyeing for a while asks him about a book they're both reading. SPARK. They have things in common and they go out! Romantic, but this isn't that kind of story.Turns out Rize is a ghoul and the date was merely a lure. An accident goes down and poor Ken's life is changed. His world's flipped inside out and upside down, the worst part? He didn't have a say in the matter. Now he's discovering the world of ghouls and what they go through.To make matters worse his best friend, Hide, is a HUMAN and has no idea what Ken has become. Icing on the cake . . . Human food makes Ken sick every time he eats it and he must dispose of it quickly. Whether he wants to or not.This book's really good, since it's manga I could blaze through the thing in one setting. I will reread it but for now I'm tearing through the rest of the volumes in this series. I love the artwork and details in the book.There aern't any really gory stuff. Most of it's blurred out by action and black ink. There are curse words in the book and some scenes are a little intense and emotional. I mean give the kid a break, he's a half breed now and trying to fit into someone's world. It is manga so there are short skirts and cleavage but no unnecessary panty shots or things like that.If you enjoy action, great plots with emotional parts, and vampires then you'll be fine. Yes, ghouls and vampires aren't the same but they do prey on humans. Cannablism is a thing in this book but as I said the artist doesn't go into depth or have up close shots of the victims or gore scenes.Do pick this book up, it's really good. . . Now excuse me while I buy some more the series and wait by the mailbox.

It's in perfect shape, I love it. I noticed one of the words is written backwards not sure why, but no big deal.

I literally can't stop reading, I watched the entire anime season 1-2 and I've waited many years for season 3 which is currently out now but I've been so bored waiting that Ive been craving more so hell I was like why not just read it ;) so now I'm not jus going to read it on my Kindle app on my iPhone but I'm definitely going to buy the entire paper back series of Tokyo ghoul every volume that can be purchased and I can't wait to purchase season 3 of the anime series because I do need to finish the collection hopefully the series continues for me years to come though;) I don't want a half a**ed collection, if ya know what I mean ;)

If you like tragedies and horror manga, this is the one for you.An amazing series by Ishida Sui. This author is great at building characters, forming parallels, foreshadowing (sometimes using Tarot card numbers hidden in the panels), symbolism using flowers, and making you think. He even references old Japanese authors like Kafka. I was on the edge of my seat every week waiting for new chapters to come out. Seriously, support the author and check this series out! It will not disappoint you.

As an older manga reader who has fallen out of manga, this was one last purchase for me at trying a new series. It was worth it, I felt this was a good story and worth the purchase. I'm not saying I'd follow this if it went into anime, but I may keep up with the manga if I can. For some reason I just can't get into manga as I used to, but this was a story worth reading and I'm curious to see how it goes in the future.
