This book was recently recommended by my mother, a holocaust survivor of Czech Jewish descent. We are reading simultaneously. I have learned a great deal about the years and decades of Czech history leading up to WWII as well as a personal and emotional account of a survivor during and after the holocaust. I feel that I know have greater insight of what my relatives must have endured. Extremely well written!!

...i had read Children of the Holocaust many years ago and found it transformative in terms of human development...In my continuing personal search for understanding human behavior and social organization, i was lead to this book.As a child, i was partially raised in Arab/Muslim countries and find myself in perpetual grief over the conflicts that my father believed would ignite World War III.Learning Jewish history and culture has become critical to coming to terms with the behavioral insanity that continues to rip human cultures to pieces with few signs of hope for peace among us...Like Children of the Holocaust, this book digs deeply into how we, as a species, continue to create and recreate the conditions that lead to painfully dysfunctional behaviors that imprison is all in terrifying and repeated cycles of behavior regardless of national identity, political structure or creed -- or maybe because of it.

I have read "Children of the Holocaust" by the same author. I couldn't put it down. This book is not as easy of a read. I read this book for a class at my synagogue. If you are curious about the life of the Jews before World War II, this book is for you. There aren't many books that I can find written on the subject of the Hapsburg Empire Jews. The book gave me a peek inside of the life of the Jews at a time when there was some prosperity and less antisemitism. The author had to do a tremendous amount of research to put this information together and I am sure it was an uphill battle. Discovering the history of Jews who were nearly annihilated is a hard task.I think the title can be deceiving. There are unfortunately so few personal accounts from that era, it does read more like a history book. For me it was worth the read as I have some familial ties to that region. If you are looking for very personal accounts similar to "Children of the Holocaust" you will be disappointed.

Ms. Epstein's book is a beautifully written, thoroughly absorbing look at the forces-- in particular -- the women who shape our being. Working through a range of sources, she pulls together a clear and compelling portrait of what life was like for Jewish women and families in Central Europe before, during and after WWII. This is a story of the Holocaust, but it is so much more, because it is a glimpse into family, marriage, work, love and faith in a rapidly changing, and terrifying reality, and how the strength of individuals can rebuild lives and a future.

I am so pleased to have stumbled across Helen Epstein's account of her mother's experiences during the Holocaust. Ms. Epstein's work skillfully combines two stories: that of her attempt to recover her mother's past and her mother's personal history. I was particularly impressed with how the larger history of the Jews of Czechoslovakia and of the nascent Czech republic was woven into the story. Ms. Epstein is an exceptionally clear-eyed writer, managing to convey the tragedy of her family's past without losing her grip on the narrative. I was struck, at the same time, with how well she creates a vivid picture of her family's experiences and the daily reality of life in pre-war Czechoslovakia and in the camps. I can't recommend it enough.

An extraordinary book about her mother and her mother's family by a daughter of a Holocaust survivor. This book was especially interesting because it dealt with Czech Jewish community, a little known and not well documented area of European Jewish history. I very much enjoyed it.

I am of the same generation as Ms Epstein, born to Czech parents who emigrated to the U.S. in 1947. I appreciated her careful research going back to my grandmother's generation. Although every family's story has its own trajectory, the backdrop that Ms Epstein explains in such detail is both familiar and enlightening. I am grateful to her for sharing what she learned.

I could not put this book down. Beautifully researched, and a real story. Although refashioned from research, the characters come to life, and Ms. Epstein has handled this heart-breaking topic with grace. I can recommend this book to anyone interested in a personal history of the Holocaust.

I grossly overpaid for this. I really should've just googled her speech. It's probably 4 pages long in total. The kindle edition includes very small font and lots of graphics to fill up the pages. But it took me all of 20 minutes to read this and Amazon is out here charging 9.99 for it :-/This really should've just been posted to Harvard's website for free.At any rate, I imagine witnessing this speech was quite a treat. It was funny and honest and devoid of arrogance one might expect from someone who's experienced this amount of success. It focused on three important themes:- success and failure should be defined for yourself- failure brings with it the gift of fearlessness, and presents opportunities to begin again- empathy and understanding of one's own privilege is an important tool in understanding your reality and believing in your possibilities

This is life changing. From the first time I heard JK Rowling's commencement speech for Harvard University and read the transcript I knew that I was listening to great wisdom that would take hold and change me on a visceral level. These aren't words of a pep talk from some billionaire who never really had it THAT hard. These are words of a woman who truly struggled, and overcame. She chased her dream. She was of her own accord, at rock bottom. These words gave me the courage to pick myself up, and start chasing my own dreams. I felt about as low as a person could possibly be. I had given up. I didn't want to hear self help garbage from some quack. I didn't want to hear how I had failed. I did that enough to myself. Hearing these words, just conveyed as a story, helped. More importantly, I realized that failure isn't always bad. Failure has benefits. Failure can happen to anyone, but it needs to be embraced, fully, as a learning experience, a clean slate, and a solid foundation from which to rebuild on.Certainly this will end up a best seller. JK Rowling's grocery list would be a best seller just because she wrote it. But I sincerely hope that all of those who buy this book will read it, consider it carefully, and take it deeply to heart. Whether you're struggling professionally, or personally; internally, emotionally, physically, economically...these words can be applied. There's no scheme to buy into. There's no twelve step path to follow. There's no work book to fix it all in 30 days. There's solid, sound advice to use, and to adapt to any situation. Use it, learn it, live it.

I love J.K. Rowling so very much and I knew this was just her Harvard commencement speech (which I had previously read) but I am still so happy to have this book! I have read and reread it several times and each time I finish it I feel like I can take on the world. If you're a fan of Rowling and you want something inspiring (and clever and humorous), I would highly recommend this!

This is a short, illustrated text of Jo Rowling's commencement speech at Harvard. It's uncommonly personal for such a speech, filled with wit and heartbreak, and it is in essence a sort of homily, a spiritual message on how to live worthwhile lives. I wish every young graduate could read it. I wish I had been there to hear Jo give this speech -- but having it in print is the next best thing.

Spoken well by someone who has gained and employed the wisdom of life experience to its maximum potential. No one can dispute the words shared within. The author has lived this and fortune has smiled on her. God bless her for sharing the wealth of her life path, as well as her fertile imagination and proof of resilience.

Short and easy to read, but the words are powerful and moving. This book came to me in a very dark and hopeless time in my life, and gave me the boost I needed to push through. I had borrowed a library copy, but once things (financially) got a little better, I had to own a copy for myself. This is a book I will reread again and again whenever I need my spirits lifted. The author's words are profound and magical. I highly recommend this to everyone.

J.K. Rowling is one of my favorite authors ever. This book touches on the importance of having the courage to fail at courageous attempts and why it's important to keep your imagination. The pages are short for a hardcover book, but there are images in the book that add to it. I finished it in about 30 minutes or so.

I didn't know what this book was about when I bought it, I actually thought it was a book about writing. A commencement speech J.K. Rowling gave at Harvard Univerisity. Despite the fact that it wasn't what I thought (I hadn't really looked into it at all when I purchased it!), I am so glad I ended up purchasing it! It is a rich and inspiring speech, one I'll probably read many times in my life! Love it and definitely suggest it to all fans of great writing!

Despite being routinely ridiculed in the three seasons of "An Idiot Abroad", Karl Pilkington is a fount of common sense and wisdom at the most unlikely points in his travels; he's also a very, very funny writer and I couldn't recommend "The Further Adventures of an Idiot Abroad" more highly, especially to people who, like Karl, have traveled to distant places and have been way outside their comfort zones. This book is essentially a recounting of the second season's travels for "An Idiot Abroad", and includes classic recollections of the best moments from the series and much more. If possible, I recommend watching the show before reading the book, but it's not essential. There are so many great discussions in this book, but some of my favorites follow. In the "Desert Island" episode Karl gets taken to dinner and subsequently sleeps in a treehouse. But it's frequently about the food with Karl (and this is also one of my frequent impediments when traveling to obscure places): "I didn't bother waiting for tea after they showed me what they'd be serving up. It was fruit bat. It's a bat, and adding the word 'fruit' to it doesn't make it any more appetizing." This would be a recurring theme: his recollection of eating sea slug for breakfast in Japan really struck home with me as I spent last August in Japan, and while not being as fish-averse as Karl, I have to say that the seafood in Japan is on a whole different level: I was impressed with Karl's ingenious decision to tactically eat cough drops to mask the taste of the food. I love Japan, but will remember the cough drops next time I visit. Thanks for the tip Karl!Karl also brings out the best of people wherever he goes. On his trip to Moscow, he encountered a taxi driver who perfectly summed up the Russia travel experience:Pascha: Red Square is a place of execution. The ground is saturated with blood. We would be walking waist deep in blood.Karl: Do you do this as a living, this tour guide thing?Pascha: Occasionally. It's not really my main service product, but, yes, I do these things. The more I do it, the less I like it.These interactions and many more await readers in this book. Karl is opinionated and set in his ways, but he's always a very good sport, and I guarantee he does things Ricky and Steve would never in a million years do despite their taunts. I highly recommend the television show (available on DVD) and Karl's books, particularly "The Further Adventures of an Idiot Abroad"!

This book goes along with the show, "An Idiot Abroad". The concept is that Ricky Gervais and a friend send Karl Pilkington across the world. They send him specifically to terrible hotels and make him have a terrible time for their own entertainment. The books are Karl's published journals of his trips around the world.I personally would recommend reading the book first, as the show conveys the realistic aspect of it and Karl's hilarious UK sense of humor.Overall, great book.

After reading An Idiot Abroad I though I'd take a chance and read the follow up book even though I didn't see the TV show. I'm not sure if it was ever shown in the US as An Idiot Abroad was but after reading the first book I ordered this. Its very funny and stands alone even without seeing the show. Pilkington is hysterical and is probably the funniest Brit right now. If you want to laugh and enjoy reading about someone else travels this is the book for you...

The release of a new Pilkington book is cause for celebration. And in the IDIOT books ther is the bonus of conversations with Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais. Three of the funniest men on the planet come together to produce these hilarious shows. But, only in the book do you get the full glee of Karl's thoughts. The truly funny thing? Karl may just be the smartest of the three...

If you have watched the Idiot Abroad series then you will probably have an affection for Karl - his writings (which are really his diaries whilst on his travels) will make you laugh out loud oftentimes and make you wonder about things from a decidedly different perspective. The words seem to fly off the page to the point that when you've reached the end it's a bit of a disappointment to be done with the book. If you want some light reading then do purchase this book - you'll almost hear Karl speaking the words.

I appreciate his outlook on life, he makes really awesome points, that end up being hilarious, but so true. Then I watched the actual series on YouTube & Netflix. Idiot abroad...a must see! His unintentional moaning can show him as a Debbie Downer. However, in the style he does it? Karl will be Karl & you can't fault him for it. Bc he's upfront about who he is from the get go. And he should be so lucky to have Suzanne by his side!

This is a great book… the formatting and set up of the book is second to none… what a great concept and really good execution. This book is funny, interesting and inspirational for all wannabe travelers out there. I have all other Karl books, and they're all one better than the other. This is a must read!

This book is so funny because Carl Pilkington just puts it out there as he sees it and I like the way he sees it. He must also be a real pain to live with. Poor Suzanne! I have Idiot Abroad and unless this one disappoints (and it hasn't so far) then I will be getting the others he's written. It's been a great read considering the depressing things going on in this country.
