Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks is one of the world's leading Jewish thinkers and moral voices of our time, laureate of the 2016 Templeton Prize. Out of the enormous tragedy of the Holocaust, God has raised up out of his chosen people in the United Kingdom the prolific Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (born in 1948; married in 1970), the recipient of the 2016 Templeton Prize, who did his undergraduate studies in philosophy at Cambridge University and his doctoral studies in philosophy at Oxford University in 1981-- in political philosophy – and his rabbinical studies at the Jews’ College and Yeshivat Etz Chaim in London.Rabbi Sacks’ new book is titled Essays on Ethics: A Weekly Reading of the Jewish Bible (2016). It includes a foreword by former Senator Joseph I. Lieberman. Unfortunately, it does not include an index. But an index or two would enhance its value.If you like truth in advertising, then I should tell you that the main title and the subtitle accurately advertise the truth of this book. It consists of readings/commentaries on selections from the Hebrew Bible, with special attention to discussing ethics -- and social and political history and philosophy. At times, Rabbi Sacks’ comments involve close etymological and grammatical analysis of certain Hebrew words, which I always find informative and instructive.As I say, Rabbi Sacks always begins with a selected passage from the Hebrew Bible. He explicates its wording and usually tells us how it has been interpreted in different ways over the centuries by various Jewish interpreters. But then he adds his creative interpretation. His creative interpretation is always fun to read. You will probably not be bored by his creative interpretations.But stand forewarned. Rabbi Sacks often refers to Rambam and to Ramban.Rambam is Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, or Maimonides, 1135-1204 (page 4).Ramban is Rabbi Moses ben Nahman, or Nahmanides, 1194-1270 (page 15).Rabbi Sacks’ accessible new book Essays on Ethics is probably not in danger of becoming a best-seller in the United States.My, oh my, Rabbi Sacks is not going to be popular with the political-correctness crowd.In Rabbi Sacks’ estimate, the bonds of collective loyalty were “weakened by the individualism of the 1960s and further damaged by the ill-thought-out multiculturalism of the 1980s” (page xxxiv). We might wonder what a well-thought-out multiculturalism would be.Rabbi Sacks also says, “Community is the antidote to individualism on the one hand and overreliance on the state on the other” (page 143). He credits Alexis de Tocqueville with coining the term “individualism” (page 296). (Individualism in the pejorative sense should not be confused with individuation and individuality.)Rabbi Sacks also says, “In Judaism, it is as a community that we come before God. For us the key relationship is not I-Thou, but We-Thou” (page 143).But Rabbi Sacks says that “the love of God is particular. It is an I-Thou personal relationship” (page 22).Later in his book, Rabbi Sacks says, “One of the aftermaths of Marxism, persisting in such movements as postmodernism and postcolonialism, is the idea that there is no such thing as truth. There is only power. The prevailing ‘discourse’ in a society represents not the way things are, but the way the ruling power (the hegemon) wants things to be. All reality is ‘socially constructed’ to advance the interests of one group or another. The result is a ‘hermeneutic of suspicion,’ in which we no longer listen to what anyone says; we merely ask what interest they are trying to advance. Truth, they say, is merely the mask worn to disguise the pursuit of power. To overthrow a ‘colonial’ power, you have to invent your own ‘discourse,’ your own ‘narrative,’ and it does not matter whether it is true or false. All that matters is that people believe it” (page 242).Now, Aristotle wrote a famous treatise ethics known as the Nicomachean Ethics. But I want to discuss his treatise on civic rhetoric. In it he discusses three different kinds of civic rhetoric: (1) deliberative rhetoric in legislative assemblies, (2) forensic rhetoric in courts of law, and (3) epideictic rhetoric in public ceremonies involving personal and civic values (such as funeral orations).Both Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and Rabbi Sacks’ Essays on Ethics involve epideictic rhetoric about personal and civic values.I should also say that the Hebrew Bible at times features certain passages that biblical scholars refer to as lawsuits, because the passages seem to be conducted as claims and counter-claims in a court of law (Aristotle’s forensic rhetoric). Of course the Hebrew Bible famously features the Mosaic law, as it is called. Incidentally, Moses is not initially portrayed in the Hebrew Bible as a charismatic speaker, but he becomes an effective speaker later on.Make no mistake about it, Rabbi Sacks is British. But he has not neglected to study our American cultural heritage – especially the Calvinists in New England.In his new book The Kingdom of Speech, Tom Wolfe, who holds a Ph.D. in American studies from Yale, lists John Calvin as one of the six most influential persons in world history.The Calvinists in New England came from East Anglia. At the time, Ramist dialectic dominated the curriculum at Cambridge University in East Anglia. Peter Ramus (1515-1572), the French logician and educational reformer and Protestant martyr, was a French Calvinist.The American Jesuit cultural historian and theorist Walter J. Ong’s family ancestors left East Anglia on the same ship that brought Roger Williams to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1631.Almost all the college-educated men in New England in the seventeenth century were Ramists.When Harvard College was founded in 1636, Ramist dialectic dominated the curriculum.Rabbi Sacks says, “The early settlers were Puritans, in the Calvinist tradition, the closest Christianity came to basing its politics on the Hebrew Bible” (page 92). Elsewhere he characterizes them as steeped in the Hebrew Bible (page 290). No doubt they were steeped in the Hebrew Bible.Rabbi Sacks notes in passing that the Gutenberg printing press emerged in Western culture in the mid-fifteenth century (pages 65 and 81).But Rabbi Sacks does not happen to advert explicitly to Ong’s massively researched book Ramus, Method, and the Decay of Dialogue: From the Art of Discourse to the Art of Reason (Harvard University Press, 1958).Rabbi Sacks also does not happen to advert explicitly to the Jewish Harvard sociologist David Riesman’s widely known book The Lonely Crowd: A Study in the Changing American Character (Yale University Press, 1950). In it Riesman discusses three broad character types: (1) outer-directed (also known as tradition-directed), (2) inner-directed, and (3) other-directed. He favors inner-directed types, and he is skeptical about the then-emerging other-directed types.Nevertheless, Rabbi Sacks uses the terminology outer-directed and inner-directed (page 179).Because Rabbi Sacks is conspicuously a Brit, I want to quote one of the more memorable comments he makes: “England is, or was until recently, a tradition-based society” (page 92). It fell to all those British colonists in New England and elsewhere to make American culture famous for producing inner-directed persons. He credits this remarkable development to the Puritans’ fascination with the Hebrew Bible.Rabbi Sacks connects outer-directed types with shame cultures, and inner-directed types with guilt cultures. On the whole, the ancient Hebrews portrayed in the Hebrew Bible pioneered guilt culture – amid a sea of shame cultures in the ancient world.Now, Rabbi Sacks explicitly says, “Jewish thought is counter-philosophical” (page 167) to distinguish it from the Western philosophical tradition of thought.Rabbi Sacks says, “The Jewish mystics, among them Rabbi Shneur Zalman, spoke about two souls that each of us has – the animal soul (nefesh habehemit) and the Godly soul. On the one hand we are physical beings. We are part of nature. We have physical needs: food, drink, shelter. We are born, we live, we die.”He then quotes a passage from Ecclesiastes 3:19 about our animal nature.“Yet we are not simply animals. We have within us immortal longings. We can think, speak, and communicate. We can, by acts of speaking and listening, reach out to others.”I have here quoted from page 154.Rabbi Sacks also mentions “what the Jewish mystics called the nefesh habehemit, the animal soul” parenthetically on page 13.Even though Rabbi Sacks claims that “Jewish thought is counter-philosophical,” I learned in my studies of Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy at Saint Louis University, where I took English courses from Ong, how to distinguish the specifically human soul from the infra-human soul of the human animal – a distinction that parallels Rabbi Sacks’ distinction. Methinks he doth protest too much about how counter-philosophical Jewish thought is.For example, Rabbi Sacks discusses Rambam’s “two quite different ways of living the moral life”: the way of the saint and the way of the sage (page 223). “The sage follows the ‘golden mean,’ the ‘middle way’ [between the extremes]” (page 223). Rabbi Sacks says, “This is very similar to the vision of the moral life as set out by Aristotle in the Nicomachean Ethics” (page 223; also see page 246). True enough. However, because Aristotle is a philosopher, the parallel between Rambam’s way of the sage and Aristotle’s vision of the moral life does not exactly support Rabbi Sacks’ claim that “Jewish thought is counter-philosophical.I can attest from the courses in Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy that I took at Saint Louis University that St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) was a medieval Aristotelian whose vision of the moral life also included the golden mean between the extremes.Before the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) in the Roman Catholic Church down-sized Thomism, many American Catholic undergraduates at Catholic colleges and universities in the United States studied Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy as part of the required core curriculum and studied Aristotelian-Thomistic ethics.In conclusion, if Americans today are interested in the thought of a Brit born and raised in the tradition-based society of England, they might fascinated with Rabbi Sacks’ creative interpretations of the Hebrew Bible and political thought in Western culture.

Rabbi Sachs writes in a way that is accessible to the layman, but deep enough to inform even those familiar with the Torah and Biblical ethics.

As a secular, cultural Jewish male I went through the years of Hebrew school before my Bar Mitzvah without knowing very much about what the Torah meant or stood for. We concentrated, like many I'm sure, on learning, by rote, the ritual, but not the "back story." Rabbi Sacks' book is that "back story" I missed then and have missed since. I can't thank him enough.

Rabbi Sacks' writings have helped me tremendously to recapture the relevance of spirituality in my day-to-day life and outlook.

I’ve never read a book quite like “The Luminaries,” an 840-page tale of skullduggery and betrayal in a gold rush town in New Zealand in the 1860s. it’s too long but when the last page is turned, you hunger for more. The story of fortunes made and fortunes lost is told backwards and forwards, circling around Eleanor Catton’s central insight that the pursuit of riches is a neverending story, revolving everywhere around us like the astral array. As she writes about her story: “…his narrative had been further convoluted by countless interruptions, clarifications, and echoes—all chasing one another, as endless circles, going round. What a convoluted picture it was—and how difficult to see—in its entirety!”The characters who scrabble for gold in the Antipodean mud—and those who prey on them—are often venal, sometimes self-sacrificing, or both. There’s a whore with a heart of dross, a naïve greenhorn willing to do anything for a handful of pure, a local Mr. Big with many small schemes, a name-changing bounder, an identity thief, some claim-jumpers, a shipping clerk, a couple of Chinese, a Frenchman and a Maori. There’s a trunk full of gowns full of gold. There’s a shipwreck, a shiptheft, opium here and opium there, a dramatic séance, and a trial of the century…and it’s all governed by astrological predetermination—which is upside-down because everything happens in the Southern Hemisphere.“The Luminaries” won Britain’s premier literary prize for its prodigiously talented 28-year-old author. If you have a spare week, read it.

This book immediately caught my eye based on its unique setting and structure and fun plot, and the fact that it won the Man Booker Prize. I decided to get this book (got the kindle version) despite reading some reviews that the book was "too long" or that characters "weren't developed" and I am SO GLAD that I did! I loved it! thrilling and engaging, with many interesting and diverse characters. The astrological structure superimposed over the plot added a larger meaning/purpose to the book that took it beyond a classic (albeit engaging) murder/blackmail mystery. I also had a very basic understanding of astrology but didn't feel that hampered my understand or enjoyment of the book. I enjoyed reading every second of it, and it was a very quick read despite its length due to the fact that most of it is engaging dialogue between characters. You might not get a super fairy-tale-ending resolution to all the character's storylines, but Catton's writing is truly brilliant. A perk of reading this on a kindle, is that you can click on the many character's names and be given a background on who they are and what astrological sign/planet they are associated with, and also be able to translate/define vocabulary words that are specific to New Zealand. I wish there was a translator for Maori though! I had to type the passages into google translate on my phone, not sure why the language wouldn't be included in the Kindle translator. Overall: Very glad I read this book!! It is so complex, I could easily see myself reading it again and still getting new things out of it.

Gushing reviews are easy to write, (so are pans), but what to say when you know that a book is well written, innovatively and creatively structured, and is destined to be loved by many, but it just didn't appeal to you? "The Luminaries" by Eleanor Catton, is such a book. Short-listed for the Booker Prize, this novel, that weighs in at over 800 pages, takes a bit of a commitment to get into and, once invested, it must "grab" you to continue. I got half-way through and then had to have a "talk with myself" about continuing. It just isn't my kind of novel and continuing was going to take too much of my precious reading time. Yet, I was far enough in to see that its innovative style of folding back in on itself will appeal to many readers. It's like a complicated pastry; the plot is kneaded and folded to produce the confection intended. This is not a novel for readers who like their plots to be linear.Catton's writing style is beautifully lush and vividly descriptive. Her descriptions of the myriad characters are wonderfully rendered both in the descriptions of their physical selves and of their inner selves. Catton also creates a unique and interesting setting of a New Zealand gold mining town in the mid-nineteenth century.I'm posting this candidly honest review to help other readers ascertain if they are the type of reader who will enjoy this unique novel, or not.

About the Author

While attending college at Nihon University, in 1988, Kentaro Miura debuted a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken (Fist Of The North Star).In 1990, the first volume Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga entitled Japan. Miura's fame grew after Berserk began "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of this masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary manga artists.In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan made, ranging from statues and action figures, to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentaro Miura received the second place in the Tezuka Osamu (Astro Boy) Cultural Prize of Excellence for Berserk. The author lives in Tokyo, Japan.

This is the 4th volume in the Berserk series and starts the storyline involving Griffith and the Band of the Hawk. I enjoyed it and continue to find this series very well done. I am always very impressed with how much progress the story makes in each volume.In this volume we get to see how Guts was raised from a boy to be the badass fighter he was in the earlier books. We also meet Griffith and the Band of the Hawk. For those who have watched the original anime this is where the Golden Age story arc starts; so this will be familiar to Berserk anime fans.The illustration continues to be amazing. The story makes a lot of progress in this book and a lot of great new characters are introduced. The action scenes are plentiful and well done.Overall this was an excellent continuation of the series and I enjoyed it a lot. I would recommend to mature graphic novel readers who enjoy fantasy manga packed with action and violence but balanced with a good story and engaging characters.

Since they didn't ask about this book the way they did about 5 & 6, I'm going to type in the answers as part of my review. First of all, let me say I love the series, the writing and illustrations are excellent. Gattsu "Guts" has a rough life, and he has ties to other beings like demons, so there IS violence in the story. This book in particular has some sexual content that would not be appropriate for young children. The story is narrated in the same interesting style, alternating between characters and points of view.

Loved this volume and I really like that things seem to be moving along at a great pace in regards to Guts' relationship with his companions.

The tv show destroyed my heart and these novels take the experience even deeper and of course theyve once again ripped out my heart chewed it up and spit it out..YES ITS THAT INDEPTH OF A STORY...I would not recommend these to young kids as it does have a mature theme to it...Anyone who loves anime and have never experienced Besrerk please do yourself the favor snap in to it.

As someone who grew up on fantasy novels and JRPGs, Berserk is my absolute favorite series hands down. There really is no alternative if you're looking for a mature and gritty story, with themes that envelope nearly all emotions and tragedies. You are absolutely drawn to the characters and their struggles. I can't speak enough praise for what this series does.With that said, this volume came to me in bad quality. I don't know if I got a bad batch or if quality standards at Dark Horse are lower than they should be, but out of 200+ pages, I can recount at least 40 pages that have lacking ink coverage. Many images that I know for a fact have darker shading instead look like they are sketched on. The fight scene at the very beginning of the volume is originally quite laden with ink, as it originally was. However in my copy of this volume, everything looks like it was sketched in a few seconds. Comparing the pages side by side with scans, I know for a fact that there is something wrong with my copy.I purchased this volume new, but the quality really sucked for me. I've also received another volume, New mind-you, that had 3 torn pages at the front.C'mon, Dark House. Why are you doing this series a disservice like this?

I don't think I have ever written a review. But, I love the cd so much that I felt compelled to do so. I bought this several weeks ago, and I have listened to it almost every day since I bought it. It is definitely a mood lifter that you can jam out to. Its almost like an upbeat meditation cd, but without the sleepy side effects. It really does get me into a happier frame of mind. Just yesterday, I had gotten some disappointing news, and couldn't shake the "down in the dumps" feel. I put this cd on, and it really helped me pull myself out of that funk. Many of the songs have an up beat techno feel. If you are an Abraham-Hicks fan, you will enjoy this.

I own many Abraham books, DVDs and CDs including the excellent Getting Into The Vortex: Guided Meditations CD and User Guide and was expecting something along the same lines as this or something like the brainwave electronic sounds CDs of Tom Kenyon or the brainwave music of Jeffrey Thompson which are based on scientific studies of higher states of consciousness. For instance, the brain states of Buddhist monks in meditation have been studied and these brainwave CDs are programmed to induce similar brain patterns in listeners to help achieve higher states of consciousness. These are true 'leading edge vibrational music' works.Rather than any of the above, I was very disappointed to hear the awful music on this CD accompanied with badly blended and repetitious excerpts from old Abraham quotes. There is no new Abraham material here, and the music is more appropriate for a psychedelic disco club or such activities as running or driving at speed, and I use much better works when doing those types of things. This seems like a badly done attempt to produce something striving to become commercially popular.I personally own and like most types of music when the setting is appropriate but I think this CD music is awful in any context and must agree with other reviewers who find this work to be quite annoying and report getting headaches rather than feel-good blissful enlightenment.We are each unique and have different tastes, opinions, needs and expectations so my advice to anyone thinking of buying this would be to first listen to samples on the Abraham-Hicks web site and see if you like it. That's what I should have done if I'd thought about it before hand but will now return this to Amazon.

i love this upbeat cd! it reminds me of one i have from about 10 years ago by Deepak Chopra and Dave Stuart. electronic dance music with fantastic talks over it.

The is very uplifting ! I usually play softer music but got to like this too. I find myself blasting this whenever I feel like getting a mental energy lift . Works wonders for late night driving on the highway! Thanks !

see my rating on "new adventure". I got all three CD's and listened to them in the car, this one has some annoying sounds. Again, it is positive, uses Ester's voice.

I am a long-time admirer of of Esther and Jerry Hicks. Their in-person events, CDs and books have inspired me for many years. That said, this CD is their poorest product. It sounds like meeting Esther Hicks in a disco. The heavy-beat music fights with her voice for attention. The sound effects and distortion of her voice are extremely annoying. I found the entire CD unlistenable. The little pamphlet enclosed with the CD is quite nice. It tells you what Esther is saying without the music and screeching special effects.

I knew I was going to enjoy this cd, since I love everything I've read, heard or seen by Abraham/Esther. I listened to this in the car and barely realized that time had passed, getting so engrossed in the words and music. I look forward to listening to it again and again, both for quieter times, and to keep me company in the car.It reinforces their other works, whatever the medium. I always look forward to seeing new books/cds/dvds because of their words of wisdom and sense of humor. I have so many "aha" moments. I'm going to one of their seminars w/my husband shortly and look forward to more of the repetition that is necessary to really "get" all this stuff, as well as new information to help me get in sync with my vibration. This cd is well worth the money.

I started reading this book upon discovering it had been sent to my kindle as a result of a wine-fueled preorder (thanks tipsy me!) I was captivated and stayed up far too late reading it until I quite literally fell asleep with my phone in my hands and the kindle app open. I had loads of laundry to do today and kids to keep alive so I opted to finally download the audible app and listen while I folded. Listening to Busy tell her story was a gift I didn’t know I wanted. (don’t worry, my children were safely in another room thoroughly captivated by peppa pig and kinetic sand). I swapped back over to reading before bed and once again am up far too late but I couldn’t find a point where I wanted to stop. So I didn’t. And now I’ve finished it and am writing my first review on amazon. It’s that good. Keep you up way too late, can’t put it down, finish it but not want it to end so you keep it going by talking about it in a box on the amazon app because everyone in your family is asleep and to be honest they are tired of hearing you talk about Busy Philipps as if you are truly friends and your Instagram relationship is not entirely one-sided.Suffice it to say, you should buy this book. It’s funny, well written, poignant, relatable, and smart. (Probably many more adjectives as well, but I think it’s best to end it here.)

I couldn't get past the first few chapters. While it seemed a cute and relatable memoir, the name dropping is insane. Seriously, I don't need to know that the kid from Buffy told you to use IG stories, or that the guy from Roswell was a dick to you. The amount of names dropped in the first few chapters turned me off entirely and I just stopped reading it. I know for a fact that Busy is a nice & genuine person, but this wasn't interesting or good.

Like most of you I’m a IG story follower of Busy. I’m normally not a “celebrity book” reader, but she is so dang relatable (and hilarious) on IG that I decided to pre-order. YOU GUYS. She is all of us. The first sentence proved that to me. I’m only a few chapters in, but it’s like Busy wrote this not just for her, but for all women. It’s lighthearted, but also incredibly thought provoking. Busy is all of us!

I'm only slightly familiar with Busy Philipps, so I didn't know what to expect when I purchased this book. Her writing is definitely honest and open but I was imagining that her voice might be similar to Tina Fey or Mindy Kaling. It was not. I'd recommend this book to fans of Busy but did notparticularly enjoy it myself.

Not worth a star. Pure trash. I use to like her but after this disgusting book I do not like her.

This book is a page turner and definitely left me looking forward to more from the author. Busy has a wonderful, authentic voice. And this will help her in her quest to be a talk show host, which I get it, was the reason why this book was published. But she drops names. Too many names. We've all been in similar situations, just not in Hollywood. Being relatable is the selling point. Not getting revenge on whatshisname who was on (did anyone watch it) Roswell.

Busy Philipps does not shy away from revealing the ugliness under the sparkly veneer of Hollywood, revealing how awful that place can be, especially to women. She’s honest about her relationships good and bad, her work, her marriage, her anxiety, her pregnancies, and motherhood. It’s all relatable while also totally not being relatable because she’s an actor and lives a larger than normal life. But that’s what makes her interesting. She seems like a real person who could be your friend, not some untouchable star. I find her very self aware which is a good thing. All in all, I enjoyed her book very much.

INCREDIBLE. I finished this book in a matter of hours. Busy truly captivates with her writing. I was moved to tears, laughed out loud, and just truly felt she was a kindred spirit.

I loved all the pictures they included in the book. They not only described the ideas and things really well, but they gave you lots of visuals which is extremely helpful for people to picture it on their minds!

Such a beautiful book, full of inspiration!The first section is all about how to figure out your style, incorporate a theme and personalize the details with things like color and cultural traditions. The second section is full of real wedding photos, broken down by style like "rustic", "classic" and "eclectic". Even the styles that weren't "me" had cool ideas mixed in. They also have blueprint pages so if you know you're "romantic" it gives you examples of colors, styles of dresses, etc. Super helpful. The last part is all about DIY crafts for your wedding, like how to make copper wire table numbers or leather cufflinks for your groomsmen. They all seem really straightforward and easily adaptable for your wedding style which I like because I'm not a crafter!The book is a great gift for a newly engaged bride who's just starting to imagine her wedding day or someone who wants to get their hands dirty and put a personal touch on their wedding.

When I got married 24 years ago this month, there weren't many nice wedding planner books out there to choose from. (Most of the time I just stuck with my subscription to Bride magazine). The Knot: Yours Truly is a truly beautiful book, and any bride-to-be would be lucky to have it. The pictures are stunning, and there is a TON of helpful tips and ideas that the author took from real weddings and included in this book. There are several pages with craft ideas, providing the list of supplies needed and simple to follow instructions - some expert tips too! For your money you'll be getting what amounts to a picture book with several different types of strawbale homes across the US and Canada. There is a small starter section, with pictures, on general construction details.For each house there will be at least two, sometimes four or five, pages of text and pictures about the owners homes and how they were built. Don't buy this book thinking it's a build it manual, that isn't the case as the information is more of an idea book type presentation. You'll get a little on costs, size and other things including square feet both inside and outside the walls (along with small floor plans of each home) and several very well done photographs.I found these photos to be the best part of the book as they will either give you some ideas for your own home or at least they'll show you what's out there. Some of the ideas had a Santa Fe look but some had a sharp edged box with lots of glass look (and not much straw either). Most of the homes were not displayed from all angles, just from selected views.If you're on a strict budget you won't want this book unless you can find a cheap used copy, it's much more of an idea book.

Most of the appeal of this book is the beautiful photographs (I also have the paper version of the book). However, I guess someone decided to cut corners on the Kindle version. The pictures are displayed at such a low resolution that they are worthless. Shame on whoever ruined this book.

This book is a must for the person looking for information on straw bale design. It is the first book I read on the subject and was a good choice. It was fun and thought provoking. The information is solid yet presented in a way that encourages and inspires. I hope many other people take a look at straw bale from the perspective offered in this book.

This book had some good pictures of different SB structures. But, to me that is all there was.

This book is comprehensive in its content if you are interested in the techniques of building with strawbales.It is also beautiful and inspiring to look at.The book is perfect for people just starting out in this building technique.

This is the first "coffee table" book that shows how exquisitely beautiful straw bale homes can be. It also gives good information on how much they cost, various energy savings you can recieve from a straw bale home and other information on how the various owners and builders built and paid for their homes.Most of the homes are in the higher-end spectrum and I was disappointed that I didn't see less expensive (but maybe not as fancy) homes included. However I did like the coverage of the co-housing communities who use straw bale building.Overall, a lovely book that you will drool over if you like straw bale or any other natural building.

Lots of pretty photos to help you go over design ideas.

I had this book once before when I was in High School... Now, almost 30 years later, it is not only still available, but it's improved by the addition of the CD that has not only the piano part, but the option to hear someone else playing the piece. For people like me who like to know what it is supposed to sound like, this option is a great way to learn new songs. The software provided to slow down the music while you are learning is also a huge help!

These are all vaguely familiar to well known and loved flute solos ranging from moderately easy blindingly fast. My book came with a CD with the piano accompaniments. It also came with a nice little program that allows you to slow it down to any speed without distorting the quality or changing pitch.They are all classical pieces (serious "art" works as opposed to classical period) but there is a lot of variation. Good purchase whether you are preparing for a performance or just want to play for your own pleasure.

The pieces in the book are for about high school and beyond ages. I was a little disappointed because I thought it would come with the piano accompaniment music too, but overall it was a pretty good deal. This would be great music for a solo & ensemble festival type thing.

Glad to have this printed. My original copy has been used to death.

This compilation of music masterpieces is great for the intermediate flutist, for the accompanying CD is of great help throughout the learning process. A must for any intermediate flutist!

I played from this in high school for solo competitions and as an adult mother of two, trying to get back into my flute-playing after a long hiatus, I am really enjoying the level of this book. It's just technical enough to challenge me but not so difficult that I can't sit down and sight read through the material.

My daughter is a motivated, intermediate flute player. Classic flute pieces with varying degrees of intermediate difficulty.

Brilliant. The most important book I've read all year. James Baldwin would have been proud of the searching eloquence of Hansen's book, her insistence on peeling back the lethal innocence of so many fundamental American myths, of American exceptionalism, of America's inherent goodness in the world, and of the widespread American assumption that, in smaller, weaker countries a suspicion of America can be dismissed as envy or knee-jerk anti-Americanism. Not so. I've lived in America for 35 years, but before that I grew up in South Africa, where many of the observations that Hansen makes about America's brutal interference in Turkish and Pakistani and Iranian and Greek politics have half-echoes.From the perspective of smaller countries—Turkey, Guatemala, South Africa, wherever—a gaping contradiction opens up between America's self-image as disseminator of democracy and it's on-the-ground actions to overthrow democracy, undermine sovereignty, prop up apartheid, install dictators. One of Hansen's essential points is this: so much American foreign policy has been premised on a binary of good and evil, a binary intolerant of—and ruinous toward—the infinitely varied local permutations of what particular societies consider to be their own particular ideals.If you belong to an empire, you—we—have to own our outsize responsibility, which first and foremost means owning your history. As Americans we are at liberty to forget, to remain in a cocoon of ignorance, not so the peoples who have been at the sharp end of America's actions.Others may see this book differently, but as a naturalized American I read it as a clear-eyed love letter to America, a challenge to the nation to become its own best self by facing up to the global (and internal) costs of its historical self-delusions. Congratulations to Hansen on carrying forward the spirit of that most passionate and visionary American writer, James Baldwin.

Suzy Hansen's recent book, "Notes on a Foreign Country", lives up to the expectation I had for it. The author, who spent years abroad, (mostly in Turkey) tells of a world which sees America very different from how we view ourselves. She introduces a healthy skepticism which should be an eye opener for most Americans...that we are far from the wonderful people we think we are and have contributed to a great deal of the world's misery. That's not to say she isn't pro-American, but Hansen uncovers why the United States is viewed as it is, relating conversations she has with individuals with whom she speaks. One thing the author says is that no matter where we go in the world, the first thing Americans feel is how superior we are to other countries and peoples. She exposes the notion of "American exceptionalism" as not much more than a jingoistic feeling designed to make Americans feel better about themselves. "Notes on a Foreign Country" is designed to be unnerving in its candid approach to finding out what others think of us. I highly recommend it!

This book shook me to my core. Since the moment I finished, I couldn't think about it. There was nothing in it that I didn't know, to some degree.Growing up in Turkey, you hear about how there's Uncle Sam behind it all. The Americans organized the coup. The Americans fattened up the Islamists. The Americans probably even stole your newspaper from your doorstep. It's tough, to separate fact from fiction. And hearing the same stories over and over again, it's hard to not get so jaded, that you come out apathetic on the other side.But then, sometimes you need a punch in the stomach like this book.This book is undeniably about America, how the false premise of American exceptionalism, that's built on, generously speaking, lies, has led Americans, more than any other reason, to project their values on the rest of the world. Suzy Hansen's slow undoing of her American innocence, and discovering what it means to American in a post-pax-Americana world is a must read.
