Review

“A four hundred page monster of a book, as heavy in places as ‘War Pigs,’ as deep and reflective in others as ‘Planet Caravan.’”WLKY.com, 11/11/11 “In Iron Man, Iommi lays it all bare. Told in an economic, forthright style, the autobiography explores everything one would expect and then some…An enjoyable read and will make a nice holiday gift for the metalheads on your shopping list.”Rolling Stone, 12/8/11 “There’s good material here.”Milwaukee Shepherd Express, 11/22/11 “Iron Man chronicles a life of ale, drugs and women and a trail of destruction behind every tour.”Bookviews blog, December 2011 “Fans of the group, Black Sabbath, will enjoy Iron Man.”Curled Up with a Good Book, 12/6/11“Many books have been written about Black Sabbath, but this one comes from the horse's mouth and sheds light on moments only Tonio was privy to…This certainly needs to be read by any Black Sabbath fan.” Bookgasm.com, 12/2/11“Reveals the man behind the icon, yet still captures Iommi’s humor, intelligence and warmth.”  “In his 350+ page autobiography, Iommi leaves no doubt that he is fully deserving of the rock bad boy title but is even more worthy of the Hall of Fame nod…What makes the book stand out, though, is Iommi’s lack of pretense, his insider perspective and surprising sense of humor in telling classic tales…It’s the rare glimpse into the personal perspective of Iommi that makes Iron Man a must-read for music fans.” Blogcritics.org, 11/1/11 ”A personal look inside one of the most unique bands of the past 40 years.” Library Journal, 11/15/11 “Iommi paints an intimate portrait of his own life from childhood to his most recent musical effort in Heaven & Hell…Readers who enjoyed Joel McIver’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath will be drawn to Iommi’s insider perspective.”January Magazine, 11/18/11Publishers Weekly, 6/27 [Tony Iommi is] “the undisputed originator of heavy metal.”Kirkus Reviews, 10/1/11“[Iommi is] most entertaining when describing the Sabbath’s incessant, hazardous prank-playing…The guitarist is not wholly unaware of the oft-ludicrous nature of his enterprise.” Publishers Weekly, 10/3/11“An important addition to the Black Sabbath story…Iommi’s autobiography is as direct as his music.” Booklist, 11/1/11“This memoir [is] dead certain to appeal to heavy-metal fans of all ages…With plenty of behind-the-scenes stories and fresh perspectives on some of music’s most notorious characters…this is a frank and honest look at a special part of rock history.” RollingStone.com, 10/24/11“The book recounts all the ups and downs the guitarist experienced with Ozzy Osbourne and company.” Houston Press, 10/20/11 “Written in short, easily digestible chapters, Iommi's autobiography is full of revelations and observations of his career…A good read.”USA Today, 10/31/11 “Iommi has a story that needs to be told…Iommi tells his story simply and chronologically, making it easy for anyone to slip into the fast-paced tale. And yes, while there are plenty of drug-fueled antics, there's no doubt the focus is on the music here, as it should be…Iommi emerges from Iron Man seeming like a true trailblazer without sounding immodest or unkind—and I've learned that's quite a feat, especially after reading, say, Motley Crue's The Dirt.”New York Daily News, 10/28/11“A raucous autobiography…He brainstormed one of the heaviest and darkest sounds known to man. But Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi makes a surprisingly sweet narrator of his own life.” Ultimateclassicrock.com, 11/1/11 The Cleveland Sound, 12/11/11“Fans will revel in the guitarist’s lucid memory and wicked humor—but casual rock readers will likewise enjoy this tale of one unassuming English kid’s improbable rise into to the pantheon of metal godliness, thanks primarily to Iommi’s fairly objective storytelling, charming prose, and keen sense of the absurd…[Iommi is] a raconteur whose words are as endearing as they are informative.” Elmore, January/February 2012“Iommi dishes on a life of heavy music and even heavier times…Dignified and classy, while still spilling plenty of messy musical beans.”Guitar World, 12/26/11“One of the top 15 books of 2011.” Midwest Book Review, January 2012“[Black Sabbath’s] interactions with other famous music personalities and Tony Iommi's perceptions of the music world make this a 'must' for fans of the group and any collection profiling rock music history."SLUG, March 2012“Some obscure gems…It has a rapid-fire ‘quick story’ quality…Tony’s delightfully frank…It’s honest, endearing.”“When it comes to rocker biographies, the 2011 winner is former Black Sabbath lead guitarist, Tony Iommi’s Iron Man. This is the whole package: Iommi is candid, engaging and celebrated and that’s exactly the right combo for this sort of book. Though it’s Iommi’s autobiography, this is also the story of Black Sabbath, one of the most celebrated and seminal rock outfits of all time. And on this journey we take with him we discover that our wildest imaginings about sixties and seventies rock n’ roller behavior were only scratching the service…Iommi is a likable correspondent and you don’t mind spending time in his presence for the duration of the book. If you only buy one rock biography this season, for so many reasons, it should be this one.”Gibson.com, 11/11/11“[A] must-read…It contains some near-unbelievable stories: drugs, the Mafia, knife fights, Iommi setting fire to Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward, killing Virgin mogul Richard Branson’s prize carp fish with Sabbath pyrotechnics, that Spinal Tap-inspiring Stonehenge stage set, even auditioning Michael Bolton as Black Sabbath singer (true!)…and, of course, all the guaranteed craziness you’d expect from a band involving Ozzy Osbourne.”TheNervousBreakdown.com, 11/12/11"Iron Man is likely to be the definitive insider's account of Black Sabbath, coming as it does from the man who lived and breathed the band for decades."―PopMatters.com"A fascinating read...Always the quiet one, the man responsible for shoveling coal into the Sabbath furnace while frontman Ozzy Osbourne played the lovably demented buffoon out front, Iommi is a (perhaps surprisingly, given Sabbath's reputation) thoughtful and reflective man whose take on the history of Sabbath is surely the definitive one."―Buffalo News"[Iommi] speaks honestly and unflinchingly about his rough-and-tumble childhood, the accident that almost ended his career, his failed marriages, personal tragedies, battles with addiction, band mates, famous friends, newfound daughter, and the ups and downs of his life as an artist."―AOL Noisecreep"The book takes you through Iommi's entire personal life and groundbreaking musical career...A fantastic read full of small but nicely surprising personal revelations...Any fan of Black Sabbath is going to enjoy the heck out of this book."―UltimateClassicRock.com

When I embarked upon reading this, I sincerely had no idea how much I'd wind up enjoying it.I was blown away by the many stories told by Tony and had no idea that these guys were such jokesters and trouble makers in their heyday. I couldn't believe some of the stories I was reading. It was hard to put down once I started reading. I think there was a day when I read 80 pages. It was such a pleasure hearing Tony talk in depth about many aspects of recoding each Sabbath album.Very enjoyable for me. Worth every penny. I was honestly sad when I finished reading.

Tony Iommi. The guitar player that since I was 13 have been trying to emulate. To me he was the coolest and his book proves it. From his hardscrabble life growing up in Birmingham, to losing his finger tips (OUCH!) just before his big break, to his ups and downs with the Music World and his brush with Cancer. He talks about the drugs, his wives, his band mates, and the music. With some funny stories thrown in and his thoughts on life in general Mr. Iommi makes you realize that Black Sabbath was not a bunch of Devil Worshiping Hippies from England but four Lads that love to make music and have a good time doing it. Mr. Iommi is the Godfather of Metal and him letting you inside his world to look at his mysterious life is a blessing to those who have for years chanted the spells to bring about the mastery of guitar like him. Thank you Tony for your music and your book. I can now play Black Sabbath not having to worry if Satan is going to come out of my speakers and strangle me.

I started listening to Black Sabbath in the early 70's and their music was influential towards my learning to enjoy so many types of rock music. This book brings you back and you can see why Black Sabbath was such a great band, and yet just regular guys. Tony's stories are great and in a simple way they document why this decade of music is timeless. If you like the music, you will enjoy this book and end up with a whole new perspective on heavy metal and hard rock.

For a true Black Sabbath fan, this has to be the number one item for your collection. If names like Tony Martin, Dio, Brian May and of course Ozzy(John) Bill and Geezer(Terry), Eddie Van Halen,Lita Ford are familiar to you then you will love this book. Just the meaning of the track FX on the Vol 4 album is worth the price of this book.I've been a Sab fan since I was 12....I am now 51. I cannot put this book down. I love the style of the book, it is not your average auto biography. This feels as if Mr Iommi is across the table telling you his story. If I could place a virtual bet with this book, any tru deep Black Sabbath fan will love this. Buy it!!!!!! Thank you Mr Iommi for writing this

Being a fan of rock, music literature in general, one get used to "inside sources" or some "close to the band"anonymous person talking about something he ignores. The Iommi book delivers on all fronts because it's an easy to read, enjoyable, to the point and the most gratifying part a honest, cold hard facts filled one hell of a ride.I was disappointed about the downfall starting on the '80's of the whole Sabbath name and legacy, how the neverending line up changes and the impossible to understand record label shifts. All answers are here.An open view into his prívate life, the whole issue of the wives and his daughter is very deep stuff. There's a lot of trivia material to be found here. The conclusion is, Iommi is , more than a great musician, he's a fighter, a man on a mission, a survivor, an one of a kind man.

This book is basically a 200pg book expanded to fit into 450pgs, the book was obviously based verbatim on taped interviews and it really shows in the writing. Iommi is great and has lived a great life but it's hard to tell from this bland presentation of it. He really doesn't expand on anything in detail just vague references to things here and there, luckily I already know most of the stories in here already. We made X album, played this prank on member X, played X concert, X happened, then repeat...I love Black Sabbath and Iommi but I really expected quite more from this 450pg book..

First off, whenever a new rocker auto comes out I check Amazon because it's MUCH cheaper and it's NEVER out of stock. Second, if you're smart just wait until the paperback comes out if you're not buying it to collect it because the paperback (like this one) has a couple of new chapters in it and you'll have to either go to a book store a sneak a read or buy the book again. As for Tony's book, I just started it. I actually started reading it on Amazon through the "look inside" feature, something you can only get on Amazon. It's great to see if it's going to be a book you can't put down or something you'll be bored of before you get to page 2. I'm a few chapters in and I love this book. If you read Ozzy's book you'll love this one!!

With the release of this book, we get a first hand look at a band that not only defined a new "style" of rock and roll, over 40 years later they still are the best. How did "heavy metal" start, (a term the author does not like) well read his story and find out. From his beginnings as youth in Birmingham, England to super stardom all over the world. His guitar playing was the driving force of the band and heavy metal, Eddie Van Halen to Kirk Hammet to Slash they all started by listening to Tony Iommi and Black Sabbath.

I really enjoyed the first book. It was jaw dropping, the suspense was perfectly balanced and the story we'll put together. I struggled with this book wanting to launch it through a window on more than one occasion. I read some of the harsh reviews before buying it and went ahead anyway because I just had to find out what happened. I don't think some of the reviews are fair and I think on more than one occasion I wasn't fair to the main character. Here this girl has been abused for 5 years when we meet her. She's not wanted by anyone and just doesn't fit in. She's basically dead at the end of book 1 and she's barely 17. There are people criticizing that she had all these great people around her and she wouldn't accept their help. The reality is that the author does a wonderful job not giving into the fantasy of it all and tells the truth. The truth is, Emily should be one messed up person. And that's what we are reading. I also give her kudos by not having Emily's life REVOLVE around Evans or his around hers. Im a sucker for romance like the next person but it's really sweet to see Sara and Emily maintain a friendship and balance the boyfriends without being consumed by the romance. I hope Book 3 brings us the happy resolution we so desperately want for her but it may not. I gave the book 4 stars because I felt like some of the scenes were monotonous and redundant. Some of the dialogue with the mother was unnecessary and though i enjoyed Emily's independence, I wanted to see more of her and Evan. It's a worthy read.

I can’t even think straight right now!!! If you think it was a lot to deal with in the first book, then you better get ready, because this is a whole other level of... of... I don’t even know. It’s just that intense as the first one.All I can say is....1st my head is a mess, and I can’t stop thinking about the book since I’ve finished it.2nd WTF why, just why did it have to end the way it did. It has me so upset and such a mess. And it’s just a book, a book!3rd and last I’m going to guess I’ll be up way later than I should be again, with this last book because, I can’t wait another minute to read it.“Not to sound too deep, but I’ve been considering how just one little thing can drastically affect so many different things. Cause and effect. Choices and consequences. Is there a reason behind it, or is it just chance?I can’t even give a review on this because it’s just to hard and I don’t even know what to say without giving anything away except that.... Gosh I feel like my chest is getting tight, and I keep saying no, no, no again with Emma, but for different reasons this time. What is she thinking. Gahhhh!-One I still love Sara, she is the best and really like a sister more than anything to Emma. Her parents are also the best. They truly care for her like she’s just one of there own and it’s nice that they are there for her, fighting for her and taking her in. I really loved how Anna, Sara’s mom just sat with Emma and hugged her, letting her know it was going to be ok.“I’m so tired,” I told her, the ache in my chest sucking the will out of me. “I don’t want to do this anymore.” “Do what?” Sara whispered, helping me up so she could pull back the covers. “Hurt,” I muttered, tears seeping between my quivering lips. “You don’t have to,” Sara soothed, guiding me down on the bed.“Emma, it’s going to get better. You don’t have to do this alone. I’m here, okay?”“Sometimes people hurt more than they can handle,” she soothed, observing me. I had a hard time meeting her eyes. “And sometimes they don’t know how to ask for help. They’re so caught up in their own pain, they end up hurting everyone around them. I wish you didn’t keep getting hurt.”-Evan also as always is the best. I feel bad for what he must be going through himself after reveling what he doesn’t to Emma about that awful night at home. I also feel bad for him and Sara for going through what they have gone through themselves, seeing things from the outside looking in when it came to Emma. Knowing everything was not ok!-Surprisingly I also love Vivian, Evans mom she actually is a truly nice lady who loves Emma and is happy that Evan and her are together. I wasn’t sure what to think of her in the beginning or what she really felt or thought of Emma, and I’m glad she is the way she is. I just can’t say the same for Evans father. He’s not exactly accepting as his mother and isn’t as welcoming. Of course I’m sure he cares for his son, he’s just that typical kind of “we have money kinda person,” thinking things should only be a certain way.-Then there’s Emma’s mother. I feel bad for Emma, I don’t want to really say I hate her mother but I don’t like her either. I feel like sadly, she truly has a mental disorder that is the reason for why she is they way she is, and is what truly causes her to do and say the things she does. I think she really needs professional help and that she wouldn’t be as bad as she is if she had it. And for Emma she shouldn’t blame herself for any of it, because none of it’s her fault. I know she wishes things would change and be different but sadly I don’t think it will ever get better with her mother.-And last there is Johnathan, Rachael’s (Emma’s mother) boyfriend. In the beginning he truly seems like a nice person and I didn’t want to dislike him, but as time went on, boy was I squirming and thinking no, no, no just like in the first book. Except for different reasons. What I really don’t like the most is how you can plainly see he’s really feeling more than just a friend for Emma. And the worst part to me is that, he knows she’s WITH EVAN! Seriously he makes me want to scream. All he’s doing is just confusing Emma, when she’s already got enough going and to deal with. Why can’t he just be a truly caring friend and that’s it, leave it to that. Seriously sheesh.“I knew how much Evan loved me. And I knew I didn’t deserve it. But I also knew he was the only one I loved. The only one I would ever love.”Well again for me this book, just like the first one, if I could would be a review with infinity stars. It truly is that good and a must read. I can’t even wait another second to start the last book, and I really have a feeling that I’m going to be way up past a decent bedtime hour again, because I’m unable to put it down. Lol. I’m also starting to think after reading this series that Rebecca Donovan is now my new favorite author. I’m really going to have to check her other book now, after this.

In this 2nd of The Breathing Series, the saga in Emma’s senior year of high school continues. As a reader who has 3 children Emma’s age I find it hard to relate to her being only seventeen. Yes, the soap opera like tragedies that Emma encounters are twisted and unfortunate but many of the actions are the result of not thinking and continually hiding the truth. Not qualities of the future Stanford student Emma is portrayed to be. The lack of parental or authority (school/police/social work) involvement is evident especially in light of the crimes that do take place. It’s an easy read and you find yourself curious and liking the main characters but overall the story is predictable and lacks suspense.

I just... I just don't know. I didn't know what to expect with this book. I don't know how an author can rip my heart out over and over again. I didn't expect such another emotional ride that would make me question my sanity.Oh Emma. Emma, Emma, Emma. My heart continues to bleed and weep for you. I just want you to get your happily ever after, no matter what that may be. Your story is gut wrenching and never ending. When will the pain stop? When will the punches stop coming? This book. I thought Rebecca had already shredded me and couldn't possibly throw any more at me. However, she did it... again. This book is just as emotionally raw and gut piercing as Reason to Breathe.I definitely need the next book to pick me up off of the ground and give me hope again. I need to seethe light at the end of the tunnel... please!

I enjoyed the first book and liked how the author developed the characters of Evan, Sara, and Emma. I usually enjoy series, so I purchased the second book immediately after finishing the first. The second book was a complete let down. There is absolutely no character development in this book at all. Emma, Evan, and Sara are completely the same and the introduction of other characters is done sloppily at best. The dialogue is boring, predictable, and at times, frustrating. I grew bored of reading, "I'll explain it later," or one of the characters mentioning a moment that goes unexplained for another ninety pages. There is absolutely no plot to the book until the last six or seven chapters. I will not be reading the third book.

This was a gift for my father who loves our city's history. He loves it! I had seen this book when it came out originally at the grocery store years back, but didn't have the cash right then & there for it. Not only is it a good gift for someone who loves local hometown history, but a good "coffee table" piece. It's not a thick "school textbook" type but a small book with a paragraph or two of information of the streets, schools, & local buildings & businesses. I wouldn't mind it to be more info, but it is still a highly recommended product.

I over all liked this book. I was curious about how streets got their name. I found out that the names for the streets came about from people that had made a name for themselves in this city and surrounding counties. I found the book to be very helpful in finding out about the streets names I drive on regulary and how those people made an impact on the city during the early days of San Antonio.

This is a well-researched little book, but I would have appreciated references. Still, it is interesting reading and notes many historical figures of San Antonio.

''''''Very Interesting booi

Review

"Bayley's short first-person history is a compelling read and a vivid reminder that Seattle wasn't always the sparkling technological machine that it is now. In fact, not so long ago, it was something quite different."—The Seattle Times"[This book] provides context to the forces that helped shape some of the city's key neighborhoods—and makes a compelling argument for why we need watchdogs for those in power."—The Stranger"Seattle Justice: The Rise and Fall of the Police Payoff System in Seattle by former King County prosecutor Christopher T. Bayley, published by Sasquatch Books this fall, is an eye-opening new memoir that offers perspective on how hard it is to reform local law enforcement, but reassures that big changes can be made."—Seattle Magazine"“Seattle Justice” is a valuable guide to the city’s racial conflicts from the late 1960’s to the present. We should not forget this history:  The central message of Bayley’s fine book:  The good old days were pretty damned rotten."—Seattle P.I."Christopher T. Bayley has put forward a thoughtful and detailed accounting of, as he has written, 'How a city can will itself to do better.' You will find that Bayley was a major figure in bringing much-needed reform to Seattle."—Bill Gates, Sr.  "This is an important story of young citizen activists, dismayed over a ‘tolerance policy’ on crime in King County, Washington. Bayley, a leader of the group, ran for county prosecutor against an entrenched incumbent in what appeared to be a hopeless race--and won. As prosecutor, he created a professional team that ended tolerance policies and his legacy is a highly professional county prosecutor’s office that is the pride of citizens forty years later." —Daniel J. Evans, former Washington State governor and US senator  "Seattle suffers from the It-Can't-Happen-Here syndrome, and this book should shake that complacency. Our politicians, government, and the press became deeply corrupted by an illegal payoff system, and Bayley's book spells it out with an investigative reporter's relentless precision and a lawyer's attention to solid evidence. Toppling that system took a lot of courage, plenty of luck, and the rise of reform politics in the state. What a saga! What a narrow escape! What a warning for today!" —David Brewster, writer, editor, and publisher; founder of Seattle Weekly and Crosscut.com  "Christopher T. Bayley’s memoir reminds us of an old and not very respectable Seattle in which he played a pivotal role in transforming it into a major city respected for the honesty of its politics and law enforcement." —Slade Gorton, former US Senator  "This is the story of how young Seattleites reformed a corrupt police force and prosecutor’s office through intelligence, energy, and courage. Our burgeoning millennials need to step up and pursue needed reforms for American communities to continue progress today." —William D. Ruckelshaus, former administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency   "As candidate and prosecutor, Bayley led the cleanup of Seattle corruption. That he and his team did it largely through the political system shows the reforming power of representative democracy. There is a lesson here for right now in America. Sovereignty resides with the people, after all." —Bruce Chapman, Seattle City Council member (1971[-]75), founder of Discovery Institute  "Seattle Justice tells firsthand the important story of how a few dedicated reformers changed a corrupt civic culture. The battle was as much against complacency as the wrongdoing itself. Every generation needs its Bayleys to challenge the indifference and inertia of its time." —Ted Van Dyk, author of Heroes, Hacks and Fools and longtime Democratic national policy advisor  "I am not a fan of detective stories or police procedurals, and have never lived in Seattle (worse, I'm a 49ers fan). But I was drawn into Seattle Justice. Bayley writes crisply and clearly, sorting out the characters and transforming this tangled web into a fascinating tale of municipal corruption and cleanup." —John Rockwell, former New York Times arts critic    "This is a well documented and lively story that is part youth movement, part political movement, and all about a properly aroused band of citizens focused on changing their city for the better. And, ultimately, doing it." —Charley Royer, former Seattle mayor  "Seattle Justice provides a colorful, fascinating portrait of the ugly underbelly of the city and reveals how a well-intentioned tolerance policy undermines the morality of law enforcement institutions and leads to pervasive crime." —Sam Reed, Washington secretary of state, 2001 to 2013 "In an age of squeaky-clean, process-heavy local government, it’s hard to believe that in the 1960s Seattle was rocked by a shocking corruption and payoff scandal that implicated both the local police and elected officials. Bayley, a young lawyer in that era, ran for prosecuting attorney, won, and secured indictments against several public officials. This is his story."—The Seattle Times

This is a fascinating book, a must read if you live in King County, WA, and simply interesting and instructive if you don't. It is the story of a young prosecutor who took on big odds and an amazingly corrupt system. Names are named. This is history, but in Seattle where we like to pretend that graft and corruption only happen elsewhere, it's good to know that our history argues strongly against that. The book is also a fun read, I could see it being made into a movie someday actually. Hmmm... who to play Bayley?

I got this book and read it in four days while taking the bus back-and-forth to work - it was that good. The author takes us onto his journey of finally breaking the Tolerance Policy, an anachronism left over from Seattle's pioneer days. Low level vices were tolerated, on the theory that it kept out the dangerous east coast mob. This tolerance then resulted in payoffs, which polluted both the police and politicians. I vaguely remember the news of the trials when I was a kid, so I was eager to finally get into this subject. The author tells a crisp and engaging story of how the Tolerance Policy was born, evolved over nearly a century, and finally died. I was impressed with his research and prose. In an subject with more tails then facts, the author does a great job of original research, connecting chronological points into a cohesive story line, and constructing a complete story of how something evolved grossly over time. Most of all, the book is well written, encouraging you to turn the pages, worthy of your time to read.I take off one star because while the book concludes, it doesn't wrap up. There's no follow-up on former-prosecutor Carroll (the main antagonist) after the indictment, even though he lived to 96 years old. (Had to go to HistoryLink to answer that question.) It seems like the author spent time talking to some of the old-time cops who resisted the Tolerance Policy, but their viewpoints are not well developed. I would have also liked to read the viewpoints of those who supported the Tolerance Policy. Even though it's easy to condemn in retrospect, what was the thinking at the time that lead them to conclude tolerance actually served the City of Seattle better? Lastly, I find the final chapter, of relating past events to City of Seattle police challenges in 2014 (of racial tensions and the Justice Department oversight) unsatisfying and superfluous. What this book needs is a good epilogue of what eventually happened to all of the players. I guess like any good book, it leaves you wanting just a little bit more.

Reading Chris's memoir was like a walk down memory lane. I was a 17-year old Lincoln High School junior when Chris and Ed Heavey debated in Lincoln's auditorium. I was impressed with both Chris and Ed. Chris was "old" to me at the time, but he was only 31 years old. I caught the bug and decided I would go to law school. Eight years later, I became a member of the Washington bar and started my career working for Ed Heavey in his private law practice. Many of the names Chris recalls I have met or know from court. As a trial and municipal attorney, I agree with Chris that public service requires a wariness of becoming too complacent. Reform never stops. Chris reminds us of this fact.

Chris Did an excellent job of laying out a convoluted wide spread problem with corruption in the Seattle Police Department. Most of the main players in the graft were identified and labeled as co-conspirators in the problem. The first half of the book covered a period of time that I was not familiar with but identified the names of those who would play pivotal roles in my rookie years. I first witnessed the payoffs in China town working as a patrolman on the relief squad. I refused to accept free meals at restaurants and when walking a beat with an "old timer" on Pike street and First Avenue I made excuses to not take a drink in the back rooms of cocktail Lounges and Restaurants. It did not take long for the Officers and supervisors long to figure out that I was not going to participate in the corruption. Because the did not trust the new "straight arrow" rookie officer I was transferred to the South Precinct in George Town. That was where the non-corrupted were sent as the corruption had not reached there. I rember well the names of the the participants in the corruption and Chris accurately identified the main people at the top. But missed a few of the participants at the lower end of the problem. All in all the book was well written and the facts were as clear as one could get in a corruption scandal.Good Job Chris, and a fun read for someone who was there.

I was a young pup at the end of the Charles O. Carroll police scandals and when Bayley (and the federal prosecutor) led the charge to clean up Seattle's policing, so I sort of remembered following the story in the newspapers. The book is a fascinating look at a part of Seattle's history that a lot of people would rather forget. A worthwhile read for anyone interested in western Washington history.

While this provides a good historical perspective on the vice activities in Seattle which lead to the era of Tolerance, it leaves me with a lot of questions regarding some of the main characters and situations described in the book. What happened to Charles O. Carroll after his defeat and trial? What happened to the Washington Liquor Control Board members who were indicted, was there a trial, did graft among that entity get cleaned up? Did Charles Berger continue running his bingo parlors? Among other questions. While the book is intended to detail police activity it would have been nice to have these questions answered.

Detailed, informative and somewhat lacking in conclusion. Bayley could have said more about his role but he did paint a detailed picture of the political process. This is not bedside reading but his treatment does open a window into an active time in Seattle politics. The book is worth a read by those interested in Seattles political history.

I was in Seattle when this was happening. Enjoyed the story.
