Overall, it was interesting to read because I am a huge Marvel fan; however, I was mistaken into believing that it would encompass more of Stan himself, not how Marvel came to be.

Just in time for Siclcon Valley's Comic Con this weeend, to have Stan Lee sign this book! Whoo hoo

Great book about a very interesting person. What a character!

Batchelor delivered Lee's story in a way that comic fans and historians will love, even if they know the outcome. You may have met Stan Lee, but do you know Stanley Lieber? Pick this up, now. Excelsior!

Probability Theory: The Logic of Science

Review

"...tantalizing ideas...one of the most useful and least familiar applications of Bayesian theory...Probability Theory [is] considerably more entertaining reading than the average statistics textbook...the conceptual points that underlie his attacks are often right on." Science"This is a work written by a scientist for scientists. As such it is to be welcomed. The reader will certainly find things with which he disagrees, but he will also find much that will cause him to think deeply not only on his usual practice by also on statistics and probability in general. Probability Theory: the Logic of Science is, for both statisticians and scientists, more than just 'recommended reading': it should be prescribed." Mathematical Reviews"...the rewards of reading Probability Theory can be immense." Physics Today, Ralph Baierlein“This is not an ordinary text. It is an unabashed, hard sell of the Bayesian approach to statistics. It is wonderfully down to earth, with hundreds of telling examples. Everyone who is interested in the problems or applications of statistics should have a serious look.” SIAM News"[T]he author thinks for himself...and writes in a lively way about all sorts of things. It is worth dipping into it if only for vivid expressions of opinion...There are many books on Bayesian statistics, but few with this much color." Notices of the AMS

Book Description

Going beyond the conventional mathematics of probability theory, this study views the subject in a wider context. It discusses new results, along with applications of probability theory to a variety of problems. The book contains many exercises and is suitable for use as a textbook on graduate level courses involving data analysis. Aimed at readers already familiar with applied mathematics at an advanced undergraduate level or higher, it is of interest to scientists concerned with inference from incomplete information.

A good book, but an extremely poor kindle implementation. The equations seem quite readable in the sample (because we checked before buying), but in the actual book, they are in tiny type and are pretty much unusable. There’s $50 wasted. So very sorry to report this, because it would have been so convenient to have an electronic version to carry when traveling.

One of the most important works of the 20th century (or any century) in both philosophy and physics, Jaynes' work lays the foundation for the physical ontology and epistemology of science. This book is the completion of what amounted to a lifetime of effort on Jaynes' part, dating back to the "Mobil Lectures" where he first laid out this approach to knowledge. It follows the world of Richard Cox, who demonstrated that Bayesian probability theory naturally follows from three simple axioms that also serve to establish the connection between evidence and plausible belief. In my opinion, this book is a required read for anyone who wishes to understand precisely how the scientific worldview is, in a mathematically defensible sense, the best possible worldview, the one that lets us optimally use evidence to develop an interlocked Bayesian network of evidence supported beliefs that can change and evolve as the evidence is accumulated. It also shows the critical connections between physics and statistical mechanics and Shannon's theorem in computational information theory, laying the foundation for a fair bit of modern physics as it demonstrates that physical entropy and information entropy are very much one and the same thing, from a certain point of view.

This is a classic - perhaps THE classic exposition of Bayesian statistics for physical scientists. Among other things, Jaynes strove to rediscover and rehabilitate Sir Harold Jeffreys, the geophysicist whose attempts to resurrect Laplacian/Bayesian statistics fell afoul of his fellow Cambridge professor, Sir Ronald Fisher, whose works (including Design of Experiments) were among the most influential of twentieth century statistics. Jaynes's own formidable achievements in adapting Bayesian statistics to physics and chemistry are legendary. There is also some amusing byplay in the form of a running critique (often confined to footnotes) of "Willy" Feller, the Princeton mathematician who authored a major textbook on probability theory.

I haven't finished reading this book yet, but the chapters I read so far gave me so much understanding of issues that are either obscure or absent in other probability and statistics books - but are of great practical importance - that I decided recommend it here.It is true Jaynes' style is caustic against positions that are contrary to his owns. But he is very convincing on the reasons he gives to pinpoint the big holes in the so called "orthodox" school of probability and statistics.Besides, the book is very lengthy, without being prolix, on its explanations, making it very pedagogical. Constrasting with that, nevertheless, Jaynes sometimes proposes examples that I believe only a mathematician or physicist with specific knowledge of the subject mentioned by the author will be able to follow. But those parts do not impact understanding of the main ideas. It must be noted also that "Probaility theory: the logic of science" is mainly a theory book. Its goal is to present probability as an extension of deductive logic. It only brings a small number of exercises. The best thing about this book, at least for me, is having a style that really makes me look forward reading the next page, something very rare for a technical book. In fact, the only other book I came across that had that virtue was the "Feynman Lectures on Physics".

I really think everyone should read this book, and R. T. Cox's book. This books make plain the philosophical and mathematical reasons that all statistics should be Bayesian. It only looses a star, because the book is not complete. Jaynes died before he could finish it. One of his students prepared the book for publication. I wish he had finished it while he was at it.

A classic

The equations are almost unreadable on Kindle Oasis (even with 7 inches screen). They look perfect (larger and centered) on my ancient low res Kindle Keyboard (800x600).Compare the screenshots taken from the two Kindles.

#7,609 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I like James Baldwin! When I read him, I must remember the time period. He was a courageous Black Man who loved his race and culture. This book is still relevant to what is going on in our society today. It is so sad that women and people of color are still dealing with many of these issues today. It is so sad that our current president and the self interest of him and his family have been allowed to take precedence over what's best for this country and it's people. This novel helped me gain some comparative historical vs current perspective on these issues.

I decided to read the book only cause i saw previews of the movie. I just hope the movie is better than the book. I got confused a lot. Wasn't really sure what the purpose of the story was. I don't know. Some parts were really drew me in, others, not so much. The internal dialogue was distracting because of the constant unfinished or overly thought out, thought. It started to become really annoying. Still trying to figure out what the plot of the story was. Maybe I missed it. Anyway, I'm going to see the movie because they have some phenomenal actors in it. Hopefully I can grasp the concept by "seeing" it.

I think the most brilliant part about this book is how it humanizes this part of America we hear of but never get the details of. This part I talk of is the downfall of the falsely accused and wrongfully convicted. The story accounts the story of "Tish" and "Fonny," two young African Americans who are in love but separated by forces outside of their control. The story has its ups and downs, the ups do not outweigh the downs, unfortunately. It is a heart-clenching story where you want everything to go right, but reality hits and you realize that it probably won't. It is a realistic account of those that face the effects of wrongful convictions and being black in America. Baldwin does such a beautiful job of storytelling by submerging the reader into the past to be brought back to the reality of the present. I will say, however, that the voice of the narrator(Tish) at times can become overrode by Baldwin's scholarly writing which may make moments of the book feel out of place. On the other hand, the insights where Baldwin goes on his scholarly rants are beautiful and insightful to help bring context to the story and also to the canonical narrative of African Americans.

Just as I expected, literature at its finest. I'd never read a James Baldwin book before but I knew I'd be in for a well written and articulate reading. I'll not describe the story as any Baldwin book is a classic and stands on its own. However, I did wish for a more fulfilling conclusion. Who am I to question the mind of the great Baldwin though.

This is a classic novel that I should've read a long time ago but never did. I'm reading (actually, listening) to it now because the movie adaptation is about to be released. This is a love story complete with the stereotypes of the time. A black man in jail because of a corrupt justice system. A young woman pregnant with the child of the incarcerated. Black families struggling with their morality and with each other. It's been awhile since I heard phrases like "that cat" and "my pad" so it took a minute for my ear to get adjusted to the time travel. Anyway, I'm glad I read it and would recommend that you add this to your reading list, if nothing else than the fact it is a classic novel.

The narrator's voice is really what compels the narrative forward and gives this book it's quality and distinction. The first 25% of the book is beautiful slice of life from a singular perspective. When the plot really kicks in is when this falters for me. I wanted more there there, more flow. In a way, it feels like Baldwin got sick of writing about the situation he put his characters in.

Very good book. I enjoy James Baldwin's works. The end is more of a cliffhanger. I initially downloaded the e-book. I did not realize I was at the end of the book and purchased the hard copy as well.

I decided to read this again after 40 years, because of the movie that recently has been made of the book. This book was given to me by my God sister, when she saw me reading Donald Goines’ books. She said she wanted me to have a better sense of “real” Black books, if I remember correctly. What I know for sure is that Beale Street birthed in me a serious passion for African American Literature.

Mindstorms: Level 1 (21st Century Skills Innovation Library: Unofficial Guides)

From School Library Journal

Gr 5–8—Clear and well-organized, these books start with enough atomized step-by-step instructions to confidently set up beginners. The projects covered work well when combined with hands-on practice—photos of the EV3 LCD screen and screen captures from the programming software show users exactly what their progress should look like. There's an appreciable leap in complexity between levels two and three, but this does reflect the way that Mindstorms skills level up. By level four, readers who are good enough at Mindstorms that they'll be interested in the topics covered—multitasking, the Gyro Sensor, and data logging—will have probably figured them out for themselves, but seeing instructions laid out in print may inspire kids who are not quite there yet to make that leap. The only caveat is whether these books will become outdated when the EV3 brick or Mindstorms programming software gets updated. VERDICT Great for club or classroom use, or for kids exploring Mindstorms at home.

#452 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is an interesting, fast paced book. At times I almost thought I understood the premise of the story. There are times you will not be sure who the good guys are. You will definitely find yourself thinking about time travel, government, the desire for power, it is not a book you read and forgot.

I read alot of science (fact) and science fiction. The concept behind this sci fi action thriller is unique and the science is sound. I have to give the authors kudos for putting a novel spin on the whole "time travel" subject. I did not have any trouble with the paragraphs spent having the characters explain the theory behind the technology and the machine. The story moved nicely and there were many twists and turns that kept me engaged in the book. But like many reviewers, I found the dialog and the exchanges between the main characters overly simplistic and formulaic. The book sometimes read like it was meant for a teenage audience. In several places towards the end, one of the main characters explains to the chief bad guy how he was tricked and duped. The conversations are wholly unrealistic and unbelievable. The author could/should have used other methods to explain the plot twist.I considered reading another of his books but am still hesitating due to his mediocre writing style. I would give the storyline and plot for Split Second a solid 4 stars, But I have to balance that with 2 stars for the writing. Overall...3 stars.

This author is nothing less than a magician! He turned this die hard Jane Austen fan into a Douglas E. Richards groupie overnight. No one who knows me would ever believe I would go outside my genre, but when several people I really respect started raving about Split Second, I figured I'd give it a chance. I am so glad I did. No matter what your genre, this novel has it all... action, cliff-hanging suspense, smart characters, and incredibly brilliant writing from beginning to end. Richards turned the idea of time travel on its ear and I can't stop thinking about all the implications this book explores. To me that's the mark of a great author, someone who can weave a story that challenges you and makes you think long after you've finished the book. Kudos to Richards for giving this lover of English Literature a new outlook on a whole new world of storytelling. I can't wait to dig into his other books!

I highly recommend all of the books written by this author. The characters in this story are a bit flat, but hey, this is SF. It appears to me as if Douglas Richards' earliest works are quite good and the newest ones are great. I would put him up there with the best SF authors. I started to give this story 4 stars, but that was being too hypercritical, but some of the behaviors of his characters seems a bit cardboard, like early Robert Heinlein. I urge him to continue to hone his writing skills--and keep pumping out more novels. He also tends to keep hidden details that would provide conflict in the story if he brought them to the attention of the reader. I think that is from his thriller perspective. He characterizes his stories as action-adventure or thriller. I call them great SF with a good dose of hard SF providing the foundation. Of course he takes liberties with his extrapolations, but the guts are fundamentally sound. I am blazing through his collection and enjoying every one of his stories. This is good old storytelling. His heroes are the good guys and his antagonists are bad guys. Despite my criticism that the characters are a bit flat, he presents situations that show the nuanced considerations that must be made when evaluating near future developments and potential developments quite well. The characters in his series are much stronger and nuanced. If you are a SF fan you will read this guy sooner or later. He is fast becoming one of the best.

Looks like I'm in the minority here, but that happens. Here's the short version of what I think about this novel:An interesting, but not entirely original premise.Poorly developed characters.Author is unnecessarily preachy in spots, which did nothing for character development or plot advancement.Unrealistic dialogue.Predictable "twist" to tie up the story.Happily ever after. And then a plug for stars on Amazon.I kinda figured this would be a light read, but I hoped for more substance. This was a "page turner" only in that the faster I read it, the sooner it would be over.

Just finished this book last night and it was absolutely brilliant!! The basic premise of the book is time travel, but handled in entirely different way then I've ever seen before. The concepts that Mr. Richards explores are in my opinion new step in how time travel can be perceived.I would recommend this book to any sci fi fan who likes to be challenged with new ideas and concepts. I know that it has gotten me to think about spacetime in a new way.

After reading almost all the books this author has written, and really enjoying them all, I could only hope that this new one would rank among my all-time favourites such as his "Wired" and "Amped."And it did: the science fiction aspect is barely noticed, as the plausibility of the type the novel is based upon, makes it seem totally realistic. As usual, the characters are well drawn, you care about how things turn out for them, and before you know it, you've read through the entire adventure, and have that let down feeling that the book is ending. This is a "stand alone" novel, and it will probably cause you to want to read Richards' other books, right away.

I always give books 100 pages. Getting to there for this book was excruciating. Poorly written, completely unbelievable in terms of characters and their reactions. Just bad. No idea why this is a bestseller.

There is nothing wrong with this book, except at least 1/2 of the information can be found on the wiki. My 8 year old saved up his allowance to purchase this book (and at a buck and a quarter per week, that's dedication) and he will be happy with it. Personally, I think Mojang missed the boat with waiting so long to put out these guides. There are already excellent unofficial guides out there (which we have) as well as the wiki, youtube channels, twitch streamers, etc that have covered the basics completely. If you haven't already spent hours upon hours researching this stuff on the web or are a Minecraft newbie then this is a 5 star basics manual to creating in Minecraft and feel to purchase it and the companion books knowing you are getting a solid Minecraft foundation for your money. If, however, you are like me and have spent the last 2 years Googling how to do all this cr*p for you kid then the only redeemable feature of this book will likely be the 3rd section which contains ideas and some basic blueprints for some admittedly creative structures. This section is what pushed it from 3 to 4 starts for me.As it stands right now, this book and the redstone guide in the same series are the only ones I would allow my kid to consider buying. What Mojang really needs to make is a deep dive guide into the command line possibilities of the game...you know, the stuff I'm now being begged to research. C'mon, Mojang, you can do it, take my money and save my sanity!

It great for the beginner with excellent illustrations/graphics. My grandson loves this and other books in the series. Also, its a great reference for more experienced players as well. Great addition to the Minecraft library. Looking forward to future books in the series.

This was a gift for my 11 year old granddaughter. She says it is so much better than the other books she has seen. She has made some fantastic worlds and creations, so I will take her word for it.

I just gave this book to my 6-year-old son for Valentine’s Day and he takes it everywhere he goes. He loves Minecraft and the pictures really captivate him. He can’t quite read it yet but he can’t stop staring at everything and he wants us to help him build all the cool stuff.

I definitely recommend if your child is into Minecraft. This book has been read through and now sits beside him as a resource as he is playing the game. Now we need to get the rear of the set.

This was a hit with my 8 and 9 year old boys. They can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.

I purchased this for my sons 10th birthday and he absolutely is in love! Immediately after opening it he started building on Minecraft and hasn't stopped since! I highly recommend this for ages 10 and up!

My grandson loved it and brought it everywhere with him for an entire 2 weeks. I am not totally crazy about minecraft (the scary parts) but always excited for children who love books!

Long Road to Hard Truth: The 100 Year Mission to Create the National Museum of African American History and Culture, by Robert Leon Wilkins

Review

A brief history of the creation of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.Shortly after the conclusion of the Civil War, a "Grand Review," or a massive military parade, was organized to celebrate the accomplishments and sacrifices of the Union soldiers. Although 200,000 veterans marched over two days, African-American soldiers felt disenfranchised from the celebratory affair, in which they were relegated to second-class status. George Washington Williams, a well-known African-American historian, responded to this under representation by proposing the construction of a monument commemorating the African-American soldier. In 1915, a re enactment of the Grand Review was staged, and an organization called the National Memorial Association formed in response to it, which officially advocated for Williams' proposal. By the 1920s, the original idea of a monument had grown to encompass a full memorial building of some kind, which would not only honor the martial valor of African-Americans, but also acknowledge their contributions to the United States in other domains. In 1929, President Calvin Coolidge signed legislation into law that sanctioned the creation of a National Memorial Building to Negro Achievement and Contributions to America, but it was a stillborn measure, radically underfunded. Yet another bill was introduced in 1965 to study the feasibility of a museum devoted to African-American history, but that project, too, died from neglect, as did another in 1995. Eventually, however, the National African American Museum and Cultural Complex was formed, and Wilkins, the debut author of this book, was its president. He's spent 20 years researching this work, which is nearly as much of a purposeful labor of love as the museum itself. In it, he skillfully relates not only the myriad practical problems—political, financial, and otherwise that slowed the museum project down, but also addresses its moral dimension, as well as the sometimes-tepid support the project had in the African American community. Ultimately, the author furnishes a rigorous history that captures the struggle of African-American people and the proud contributions they made to a country that did not always accept them: "The beauty of the African American story is that the toil of our people has not been in vain," he writes. Given all the historical minutiae that Wilkins provides, it's a surprisingly gripping historical drama.A delightful, edifying tale written with intelligence and emotional sensitivity. Kirkus Reviews"Comprehensive yet refreshingly brisk account," "delivers a passionate narrative of the struggle to honor and share the complex and powerful stories of African-American people" ~ BookLife, Publishers Weekly"Judge Robert Wilkins was a knowledgeable, passionate, and persistent visionary in the effort to make the National Museum of African American History and Culture a reality. The Long Road to Hard Truth demonstrates that the greatest achievements often require a legacy of struggle to be birthed into existence. It is about a people who never gave up on themselves, regardless of difficulty, and in the end made a contribution that will serve all of humanity. Both Robert and I are proud to have played a role in that effort." ~ Congressman John LewisOne of the "Best Books of 2016" ~ Bloomberg

Robert Wilkins does a great job of recounting the surprising story of how long it took to establish the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Well-researched and well-written, this book will leave the reader with a great appreciation of the struggle to build this beautiful museum that now stands as the crowning glory of the National Mall. Most interesting is the critical role that Wilkins himself played in making the dream of this museum a reality. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

"Long Road to Hard Truth" by Robert Leon Wilkins is a beautifully-done history of the nearly century-long struggle to establish a museum dedicated to the progress of African Americans in America similar to the other important museums on the National Mall. It is not merely fascinating from a historical perspective, but also very authentic as a memoir of the author's own involvement. The narrative is beautifully developed, and the poignancy is palpable. I would put this one in the "MUST READ" category!.

Important read. Liked getting educated on our history as a nation. It's a story that needs telling.

Excellent book. Amazing what it took to establish this important institution. The author is a hero for his persistence and the many other skills that led to this museum.

This book was priced well and inexpensive and tells a story about the history of African Americans.

Excellent! I Love It!

2nd purchase of this book.Must read for all.

I gave 15 of the "Long Road to Hard Truth" to my family members and have already gotten very good feedback. My brother and his extended family visited the Museum on Christmas Eve and were very impressed but also saddened and angered that we seem to be going in such a "Zig Zag manner as noted by Lillian Smith in "Killers of the Dream".

Oskar Schindler: The Untold Account of His Life, Wartime Activities, and the True Story Behind the List

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Schindler is known best for the portrayal of him in Steven Spielberg's film Schindler's List, which was, of course, based on Thomas Keneally's novel of the same name. Schindler was a German who risked his life and his fortune to save 1,100 Jews and provide hundreds of other Jews who worked for him with a quality of life that enabled many of them to survive the Holocaust. In researching this definitive biography over a seven-year period, Crowe interviewed and corresponded with many of Schindler's Jews; discovered a vast collection of his private papers and letters; found the Czech secret police and Gestapo files on Schindler documenting his involvement as an operative in Nazi Germany's military counterespionage organization, Abwehr, before and during World War II; and studied the war crimes file on Amon Goeth, the commandant of the Plaszow concentration camp. Crowe posits that Schindler had nothing to do with the creation of his famous transport lists (one for 700 men and one for 300 women) and then devotes a long chapter on its true origin. Crowe sees that Schindler's transformation from a greedy factory owner into one of the most remarkable righteous gentiles in the Holocaust took place slowly. "I think that he was, at heart, a fairly decent human being despite his womanizing and heavy drinking," Crowe concludes, and that over time, the growing violence and death that enveloped Krakow's Jews disgusted him and prompted him to do whatever he could to protect his Jewish workers from the SS. With 32 black-and-white photographs, this biography is essential in understanding one of the most extraordinary figures from the Holocaust. George CohenCopyright © American Library Association. Amazing, fascinating, horrifying and sad is the story of Oscar Schindler, Emilie and others, as written in David M Crowe's well researched and easily readable biography. Oscar evolved into a deeply good good man, with great skill, courage and sharp wit, who flaws were also in many ways his strong points it seems to me in achieving what he did, and was an immensely admirable person. And it is sad that brilliant nice people don't 'appear' to get what they deserve, as loss of health and tragic failures after the war seemed in many ways just as challenging in Oscar's life story. There are a lot of horrible events and people described in this book, but also acts of humanity, kindness and braveness by many in the Oscar Schindler story, those three traits in particular summing up Oscar. There are more than a few instances of the Nazi hypocracies and madness, being used against them as they are outwitted in this story. An amazing and moving story. It's true that there's a lot of detail in this book and it can be hard going to keep up with it all, but i found the subject matter of Schindler enough to more than motivate me to keep turning the pages. One of the best sections of the book was Oscar's meeting in budapest i think it was, with aid organisation representatives for jews in occupied europe. Here you get a chance to discover what Oscar's thoughts were in relation to the war, holocaust and where he was at in action amongst it all. There is a lot of other detail in the book, not so involving, but the holocaust was a huge bureaucratic operation and apart from that, there weren't too many people with the liberty to document or concentrate on individual coming and goings, in the new cut throat order of the glorious third reich. So a lot of the superfluous information not directly relating to Oscars' daily life, is both understandably from a research point of view and also is relevant because this is precisely the world that Oscar was operating in. I think the author has done a great job on bringing us a biography on a man whos life and good deeds, never really got the reward they deserved(which is why life is as it is!) and because Oscar remained relatively obscure, much of his life details just wern't important enough for anyone to record for prosperities sake. Mr Crowe is more critical of Oscar than i feel he should be, for example, he disaproves when Oscar tell's the afore mentioned agents in Budapest that they must admit, in the intellectual realm the jew is really a dangerous competitor for the nazis. Is that such a bad and unaccurate thing to say, in light of the situation? I feel Schindler's own intelligence and strength of character is not given enough credit in the book; due to the fact that he was out to exploit the situation for personal monetary gain intially(i.e. he was a opportunistic business man cashing in on the war and occupation), and because he lost his health and failed after the war finished, it is easy to put his success down to war time craziness and the skill of the men running his factories. He was not a moral man in the conventional sense, he liked women, drinking and living in the moment but i think it was his free-spiritedness, that when given the power, compelled him to use it in a humanitarian way rather than worry about his own security, which is the accepted way to do things. Ultimately Oscar Schindler lived from his heart, he understood this, u get this from the book, and why the book is a great effort in bringing us his life story, to me the author's judgement on Oscar is not as good as it should be, due in part i suppose to the clinical unromantic objectivity that is expected of a researcher.

Oskar Schindler did everything he could to save Jews from the Holocaust.

Review

"Through diligent research,... Crocker has recovered the life of this remarkable woman who moved from gentile poverty to great wealth, all the while maintaining a sense of responsible benevolence.... This book breaks new ground... Highly recommended. All levels/libraries." -- Choice"... Historians, scholars of philanthropy, and biographers will all profit from Mrs. Russell Sage. Indeed, this book reminds us that the life of an individual has the power to singularly elucidate the past." -- Journal of American History"Crocker has mined archives and the literature of social welfare... to produce a readable and extensive... story of a remarkable woman and the role she played in the swirling cross-currents of a turbulent era in American history." -- Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly"... a fascinating case study on the elusive subject of philanthropic motivation, highlighting a perceived need to give respectability to rapidly acquired wealth. Its continuous theme is the use of philanthropy as a form of activism and a central thesis the idea that 'spending is a form of speaking'. Yet it presents the double-edged sword that when philanthropists are also activists their own beliefs and prejudices may be at work. And it is perhaps a cautionary tale for modern philanthropists demonstrating that the political nature of giving means that they cannot assume that their money will speak for them." -- Philanthropy UK"A major accomplishment... Prof. Crocker has done what many of us who studied the Russell Sage Foundation thought was impossible -- to find untapped manuscript sources that reveal the active and crucial role played by Olivia Sage (a.k.a. Mrs. Russell Sage) in the creation and early management of America's first social welfare philanthropic foundation.... This is a story of strength and intentionality, and it is exceptionally well-told. Finally, we understand who Olivia Sage, the first important American philanthropist, was!" -- Stanley N. Katz, Director, Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies, Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University"In this age of towering figures like Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett, it is illuminating to examine the life of a woman who, a century ago, became one of the most noted philanthropists of her day.... Ruth Crocker's sensitive, richly documented, and beautifully written biography brings Sage and her times alive, reminding us that there is, indeed, value in visiting the neglected 'upstairs' of women's history." -- Sonya Michel, Director, Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center for Historical Studies, University of Maryland."Through this engaging biography of one of the most intriguing women of the Gilded Age, Mrs. Russell Sage, Ruth Crocker illuminates the critical role that female philanthropy and philanthropists played in the advancement of women in the twentieth century. Mrs. Russell Sage is a wonderful read and a major contribution to the literature on class and gender in American history." -- Nancy Hewitt, Professor of History and Women's Studies, Director, Institute for Research on Women, Rutgers University.

From the Publisher

"This is a model biography. Mixing empathy with historical acumen, Ruth Crocker has uncovered the life of a woman who left few personal papers and hid behind her husband's name, but managed to emerge in her old age as one of the most influential philanthropists of the 20th century." --Eileen Boris, Hull Professor of Women's Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara

Excellent book using Mrs. Russell Sage's life as the pivot point for discussing much broader topics. The academic jargon is annoying at times, but that's a pet peeve of mine.
