I grabbed this for the office. The one I had was a little outdated. These books are always helpful, especially when my computer is off and I need clarification while marking up a manuscript. Everything in this book can be found on Google in a few seconds, so I can't say everyone needs this book. But, it does have its uses.

What is there not to like about the AP stylebook. Easy to use. 2017 is larger than the previous. Love the spiral hinge and it's all durable for constant use.

The contents of the book are exactly what I expected. The binding is a little difficult and often catches the pages.

As the editor of a bi-monthly newsletter for our community I had been using The Associated Press Stylebook dated 1990. The Communications Committee that oversees the publication of this newsletter agreed that we needed an updated version. We chose the spiral-bound version for the convenience of having the book stay open while working at the keyboard. We needed updated guidelines so that our publication could have a correct and consistent format.

Writers need a copy of this book because there's no way to memorize all the rules (e.g. Most state names can abbreviated butnot all; you cannot use post office abbreviation; must use Calif., not CA). I always forget the rules for numbers (when to use thesymbols and when to write them out) and when to use a colon and when to use a dash. If you're a professional writer, you needthis book!

This is the industry standard for journalists and PR professionals. Always keep the latest on-hand. The spiral-bound edition is much easier to use.

This was quite helpful while taking a journalism course. It takes a few minutes to understand the layout of the book to lookup things, but once you get it, it's easy.I think this book helped raise me a letter grade in my course. Anyone taking a journalism course with a strict professor or planning on entering journalism should get a copy. My textbook had a reference in it, but it was quite small. With the low cost of this book, you can't go wrong.If you're taking the course without an intent to go into journalism, check to see if you can use copies from the department first.

A delightful, insightful and educational read. Clearly written by a Christian academic, this book contains an excellent bibliography at the end of each chapter for further reading on related subjects. I bought it on Kindle, but will likely buy it in paper form, to reread , highlight and to loan.If anything, it shows how much we've forgotten as life became too easy and Christianity was (until recently) non-controversial. With the world becoming increasingly anti-Christian again, perhaps we will appreciate these people and their 'purification' movement more.

Interesting and helpful in refreshing my memory about the puritans. Learned quite a lot

I needed some research materials on the early Puritans in America for a book I am writing. A friend recommended this book and I ordered it, thinking "Well, this won't exactly be a page-turner!" How wrong I was! What an excellent, readable, interesting book! I plan to order it for a friend for Christmas, just because the Puritans as described by this author have so much to teach us. Their influence on American life today is still incredibly strong and the author's ability to bring them to life with excerpts from their own writing amazed me. Far from being sour and straightlaced, the Puritan life had both humor and a hopeful outlook. I'm not usually surprised by something I read, especially when, as in this case, I've already done a good bit of research. But this book was a marvelous surprise and I'm delighted to recommend it. Besides its excellent content, the bibliography is crucial to any scholar of the time period. If you need to know something about the Puritans, this book makes an ideal place to start!

You will read this book and wish it were required reading for all students in middle or high school. It scours away the cynical slime that has been slung on the Puritan era and gives a clear picture of how they really were. While "Worldly Saints" concedes that some of the stereotypes are true - in the areas of hard work, discipline, and strictness, for example - it goes on to show that they were not heartless, bloodless, sexless, lifeless, nor brainless. They loved life and living, loved thinking, as well as loving God, and worshipping and honoring God all seven days of the week.Their integrity, work ethic, and commitment to education - that mindset on how life is to be lived - produced the individuals who founded a great nation founded on great principles. That is why this should be read by all students. As Americans, they need to know from whence they have come.Moral issues are frequently discussed in the media, debating why something matters in a moral, social context in the present day. I have read this title at least seven times and every single time I learn something that I didn't quite "absorb" the last time around. The quotations of famous Puritans are virtually non-stop and Mr. Ryken does a masterful job explaining how so much of what is good about our contemporary culture in America can be traced directly back to their profound influence - an influence that has endured to this day. What I also like about Mr. Ryken is his ability to speak in such a plain prose style about issues that could very easily become incomprehensible, but that is a net he studiously and skillfully avoids. Last, what is most admirable is that he does not pull punches on what the Puritans lacked. In other words, he does not attempt to varnish their 'faults,' if they can be so-called, which are also laid out in honest and delving detail along with their truly great and admirable strengths.A mesmerizing read.

Frederic S. Mishkin is the Alfred Lerner Professor of Banking and Financial Institutions at the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University. From September 2006 to August 2008, he was a member (governor) of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Professor Mishkin’s research focuses on monetary policy and its impact on financial markets and the aggregate economy. He is the author of more than twenty books, including Macroeconomics: Policy and Practice, Second Edition (Pearson, 2015); The Economics of Money, Banking and Financial Markets, Tenth Edition (Pearson, 2013); Monetary Policy Strategy (MIT Press, 2007); The Next Great Globalization: How Disadvantaged Nations Can Harness Their Financial Systems to Get Rich (Princeton University Press, 2006); Inflation Targeting: Lessons from the International Experience (Princeton University Press, 1999); Money, Interest Rates, and Inflation (Edward Elgar, 1993); and A Rational Expectations Approach to Macroeconometrics: Testing Policy Ineffectiveness and Efficient Markets Models (University of Chicago Press, 1983). S tanley G. Eakins has notable experience as a financial practitioner, serving as vice president and comptroller at the First National Bank of Fairbanks and as a commercial and real estate loan officer. A founder of the Denali Title and Escrow Agency, a title insurance company in Fairbanks, Alaska, he also ran the operations side of a bank and was the chief finance officer for a multimillion-dollar construction and development company. Professor Eakins received his Ph.D. from Arizona State University. He is the Dean for the College of Business at East Carolina University. His research is focused primarily on the role of institutions in corporate control and how they influence investment practices. He is also interested in integrating multimedia tools into the learning environment and has received grants from East Carolina University in support of this work. The only problem I have is, this book is very focused on Indian financial markets and moreover, the book has a clear warning that it is not legal to sell outside of India, and I do not understand how amazon is allowing to sell the book here in US market! It appears that it could be a waste of money in part since the chapters focus on RBI guidelines and not Fed!

The commentary is usually crap throughout the book. Looking back at all of my undergraduate material, however, I realize this book is the most important. I understand the financial system better than the vast majority of people. I'm going to buy another copy soon.(end the FED)

I was taking an SEC and financial markets class and had no background in the markets at all. I had a required text but it wasn't user friendly and a little over the top with the technical information. I previewed a few books and decided on this one. It was great. It explained everything in terms I could understand (I'm an MBA student) and wasn't painful to read like the other book. Plus the US edition of this books retails for somewhere around $200. I was able to purchase the international edition for about $50-- well worth it.

This book does a good job going over financial institutions and how our free market operates. It can be overwhelming. only buy this for your college class.

The various "Make:" books are a lot of fun to work through. You gain a lot of useful knowledge in the process. Great for hobbyists and future inventors.

I am about a third of the way through this book and I am loving it. This is the perfect introduction to hands-on electronics. I was an engineering student in college (although not electrical engineering) so I was always kind of upset that after spending countless nights of my life doing all sorts of crazy math problems with respect to circuits, I didn't know something as simple as how a relay works, or how to build anything except maybe a simple circuit with a lightbulb and a resistor. I could design and build an RC circuit and calculate its time-constant but why in God's name I would ever NEED to build an RC circuit was beyond me...No more. This book lets you know that its safe to rip open a relay and see exactly why it works. It will give you a circuit design and then have you build it. It will explain why something is or isn't working, and why. This won't make you an expert in electronics, it is definitely on the simple side of things (like algebraic simplifications of mathematical models that are actually rooted in calculus or differential equations), but that's exactly what I was looking for. This book will empower you to build things. I am reading it side by side with the Electricity & Magnetism chapters of my old Physics textbook so I can make the connections with the real theory and the nastier side of the math, but I really couldn't be happier. In spite of years of college, this book is just now making me feel like I know something about electronics.Also, I recommend buying the kit that's sold for this book because it will save you a little money and a LOT of time. Amazon has been out of stock of it forever, but I went to the closest Radioshack and they had it for $75. Other than that, you will need to buy Digital Multimeter, a pair of wire strippers that can deal with 22-gauge wire, a pair of wire-cutters, a pair of needlenose pliers, and a set of precision screw drivers. Seems steep but if you plan on making use of your new-found knowledge for the foreseeable future, you will be using these tools well after you've worked through this book.

**Intro**This is a nice electronics book. It starts out basic enough that I would say an enthusiastic student in 4th grade or higher, with ample support from their parents could probably get into electronics as a hobby by beginning with this book. It is also suitable for much more advanced people if they are willing to skip the first third of so of the book where the basics are. I meet this category, since I'm a Mechanical Engineer (but importantly, not an Electrical Engineer), and I'm happy to have bought this book just the same.**Notable positive features**1.) This book is substantial. It has glossy pages, color photos, and is 325 pages long. The pictures are bright and sharp. This is the second edition, and the author described the things that have been improved from the first edition.2.) There's a lot of basic info for accommodating beginners, and a good brush-up course for more advanced people. It tells how to solder, identify resistors, install and use things like IC's and LED's without burning them out, etc. It tells the basic facts about electronic components, like what IC's, LEDs, and capacitors *are*. It recommends tools and where to get tools and equipment from. It encourages you to experiment in order to learn, like it tells you how to actually go burn up an LED just to see how much (or how little) abuse they can take.3.) It has helpful info to explain the subtle electrical engineering concepts that have always confused me, like the difference between a relay and a transistor, and what the three leads on transistors do. My college electronics textbooks didn't do a good job at this, so that's the sort of thing that I'm getting out of this book.4.) It has safety information. Soldering safety. Shock hazard safety. What you should and shouldn't be afraid of.5.) It doesn't jump into wiring diagrams instantly. It uses photos and other types of sketches for people who haven't mastered wiring diagrams yet.6.) It has little bits of electronics history in it in the form of photos of the scientists and engineers from history, and captions under the photo. This keeps things entertaining without filling the text with unwanted extra info.7.) There is information toward the end on how to program software for your own contraptions using Arduino, a fun, versatile, and cheap software that is good for programming robots and other things.8.) There are some neat example projects, including a crystal radio (a radio that doesn't need batteries).**Comparison to Hacking Electronics by Simon Monk**This book is pretty similar to Hacking Electronics by Simon Monk, and those interested in the topic at hand should consider both of these books. Both are well written, cover a similar spectrum of topics, have color photos, and have glossy pages. I would say both are equally good in writing and content *quality.* This book is slightly longer than the Monk book, and thus has more content, so I like it slightly more for that, because I'm a little more advanced, and I tend to want as much info as possible so I can use it as a reference or handbook. Finally, this book seems a little better for hardware tinkering people than the Monk book, since the Arduino part in this book comprises a smaller percentage of the whole book than in the Monk book.**Summary**If you want to get into tinkering with electronics for fun, or want to learn more about electronics via a "learn by doing" approach, this is definitely a good book. It starts out basic enough that you can probably start from the very ground level, with knowing almost nothing. I think this book would also be good if you are teaching grade school or middle school students about electronics. Finally, this book would be a good handbook for the shop of a maker, circuit bender, hobby roboticist, or anyone else that likes to tinker with electronics, and needs an occasional reminder about resister color codes, for example, or how to hook up transistors.I recommend this book with essentially no reservations!

This book is awesome for anyone starting off in electronics. I've been trying to learn from different sources online which got confusing. After reading this book, so many things I was struggling to understand were starting to come together and make sense.There's a good amount of experiments to better your understanding of the basics. Which leads to the only part that sucks ... getting everything for those experiments. The kits they sell are super expensive!I went the other route and got the components myself. This actually does save you some money and you'll end up with extras. For general components I purchased a few kits on amazon and for the chips I went onto digikey. The chips are less than a dollar each and shipping was less than 4 dollars and arrived a couple days after the order went through. So don't let those pricey kits get in the way of you learning the right way.

I just finished Chapters 1 and 2. The best thing about this book is that you start building circuits right away. Mr. Platt gives just enough theory for you to have a basic understanding of why the circuit works. On the other hand, he doesn't really give you the opportunity to test your knowledge of the components and the interactions between components; instead, you robotically build the circuits that he has designed. It would have been nice to see exercises where you take what you have learned and apply it to solve a new problem. I think exercises like this would build confidence. By the end of Chapter 2, I felt like I had an understanding of how resistors, capacitors, and transistors work, but if I were asked to design a simple circuit of my own, I wouldn't feel confident that I could.
